  • Jerry Mathers, born Gerald Patrick Mathers on June 2nd, 1948, is an American actor best known for playing Theodore "The Beaver" Cleaver in the iconic television sitcom "Leave it to Beaver" for 234 episodes over 6 full 39-week seasons from 1957 to 1963. He reminisces about his career, shares behind-the-scenes stories and answers fan questions at his 2019 Niagara Falls Comic Con Q&A panel.
"Leave it to Beaver" is a late 1950s black-and-white American television sitcom about the inquisitive and often naive "Beaver" and his adventures at home, in school and around his suburban neighborhood. The show also starred Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont as Beaver's parents, June and Ward Cleaver, and Tony Dow as Beaver's brother Wally. The show attained an iconic status in the United States since the Cleavers exemplified the idealized suburban family of the mid-20th century.
The show was created by writers Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, veterans of radio and early television who found inspiration for the show's characters, plots and dialogue in the lives, experiences and conversations of their own children. "Leave It to Beaver" is one of the first primetime sitcom series written from a child's point of view. Like several television dramas and sitcoms of the late 1950s and early 1960s ("Lassie" and "My Three Sons"), "Leave It to Beaver" is a glimpse of middle-class American boyhood. In a typical episode, Beaver gets into some sort of boyish scrape, then faces his parents for reprimand and correction. Neither parent was omniscient or infallible; the series often showed the parents debating their approach to child rearing, and some episodes were built around parental gaffes. The still-popular show ended its run in 1963 primarily because it had reached its natural conclusion: In the show, Wally was about to enter college and the brotherly dynamic at the heart of the show's premise would be broken with their separation.
Contemporary commentators praise "Leave it to Beaver" with Variety having compared Beaver to Mark Twain's Tom Sawyer. The show has enjoyed a renaissance in popularity since the 1970s through off-network syndication, a reunion telemovie ("Still the Beaver" in 1983), a sequel series titled "The New Leave it to Beaver" (1985-1989) and a 1997 movie version based on the original series. Although the show never broke into the Nielsen ratings top 30 or won any awards, it placed on Time magazine's unranked 2007 list of "All-TIME 100 TV Shows."

I'm seventy soon and I've been watching it more often lately because it reminds me of a time when we were free. Over the years it has caught my attention that the State i.e. a nefarious unseen global government is beginning to put the squeeze on the world. Our rights are disappearing while the dumbed population hasn't a clue to what's happening.

I was born in 1952, caught every episode of course and watch the reruns today. They came for a promo to Hershey Park the year they were interviewing for the new show that they were going to call Still the Beaver. We met the stars of the show which included all the family members. My younger son, Joe caught their eye and asked if he would consider interviewing for the part of Beaver's son. We flew to California, Joe was the last 5 of 500 comebacks to be interviewed. I remember them saying he did a great job but he spoke like someone from Baltimore. They suggested we go back home and sign him up for diction classes. The show was a bust but it sure was a lot of fun, a great experience. Now Joe and I share the experience with my grandchildren, Joe's children. We were treated so nicely, went to Disneyland for free, got to explore the back lots, visited the Cleaver house and walked a few doors down to see psycho house from the famous movie Psycho. Of course we got to meet the movie stars who were working at the studios. It was a real kick. LOL

I wonder how much of an influence shows like Leave it to Beaver, My three sons, Andy Griffiths show, and those early tv shows had on the generation that began to believe that children should never be spanked....not that I believe in hitting a child, but sometimes a smack on the butt is needed....
Mathers talked about how if you did something wrong on the show they had consequences...but if you really watch the shows none of the children ever really got punished, just dad or mom giving them that's wrong speech and it was wrong for you to do that...most kids would be having a party of they had to face those same consequences that these tv kids had to deal with when getting caught do something wrong/bad...
My sister & I had a conversation about this and wondered if it wasn't really these tv shows that influenced people when it came to not spanking children instead of blaming liberals as some people like to do...
I still do watch these shows...
but sometimes I have to laugh at just how unrealistic these families really were for 70-80% of American families...
And just once I wished that Beaver would have ratted Larry out because Larry was always the one that talked beaver into doing the things he wasn't supposed to do...

well there is a connection, those parents didn't hit their kids either. I really remember wishing my Dad was more like Ward and the other dads on TV. I actually ended up being more like the TV dads.

Nice try lib, DR. BENJAMIN SPOCK, an avowed socialist, pushed for that crap, and we have a whole three generations of adults or near adults who grew up never learning humility, and as spoiled me-first brats with bloated egos. Add that to the ESTEEM PSYCHOLOGY/ YOU'RE SO SPECIAL, no matter what negative crap you do, garbage during the last 25 years and you have a country that is teetering on the edge of collapse due to its own egomania and stubborness to speak the truth.
Finally, the TV shows no matter what the punishment back then were never going to show spankings of big adults whopping smaller kids because that would jump out negatively and abruptly across the screen interrupting the mind tranquilizer people were being fed. TV back then, and to an extent today, was a sedative and if you don't believe that, an adjunct Professor of MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS at PRINCETON did a research project in the 1970's that showed that just based on his students involved in the project, the more TV they watched, the more docile the student. Later, he wrote a novel about that passivity which was made into a movie- BEING THERE. Yep, JERZY KOSINSKI saw it in his research, and PETER SELLERS as Chauncy Gardener demonstrated it on the screen.
      TV is a big tranquilizer.
      Make no mistake about it.

MANY people thought I was beaver, many a times people would stare at me as they pass. while pastoring a church, the association of churches had a young picture, who is your pastor. I sent a picture of beaver and I, and asked which is your pastor, they chose Jerry Mathers.

Just watched the episode where Wally ran for class President and Lumpy came up and congratulated him for getting 53 votes. And Eddy had to remind Lumpy that he only got 9 votes 😂. They both lost to a more popular guy I guess.

the show may not have survived without Eddie Haskell as being too cheesy. He was chasing car thief but he did not know the bad guy STOPPED and instead waited. so he ran up to him face to face and bad guy shot him 3 times
