I’m from the US and have been passively aware of this conflict for my whole life. But to be honest, I’ve never bothered paying attention because our coverage of it is so heavily biased and you can’t read or watch anything without being told how to feel about it. This video was fantastic neutral coverage of the situation so that I can make my own opinion and thoughts about it. Thanks for that. I’d love a documentary on the full history of the region. I can answer that. In a nutshell, the Palestinian movement begins at the tail end of the Abbasid caliphate (~1100-1200 AD timeframe), right after the first crusade retook Israel from the Muslims. The Israelites settled that region in ~1250 BC, and have been at war with the Hittutia/Mitanni (Lebanon/Jordan), Egyptians, and Assyrians (Syria) since they settled and built Jerusalem. It has always been a wealthy area critical to trade, and the neighboring nations have always been hostile. It wasn’t until the Crusades that the term “Palestine” is even used.
Simply put, until the Khazars settled Eastern Europe and allowed Jews to flee the middle east from Muslim persecution, Israel was always a subject of foreign control until the 1940s.

The isreali government HAS an apartheid grip over Palestinian people. In Gaza they bombed frequently telling people with nowhere to go because neighboring borders wont take them to leave. Gaza a city with half its population being children and the average age of the total citizens being 18.
In the West Bank "neutral zone" where Isreal is not supposed to be allowed to go, Jewish peoples from around the world can go and claim homes of Palestinians that travel out of West Bank whether they're temporary fleeing for safety or any reason. Once they leave they aren't allowed back because Isreali force and Zionist settlers. The settlers are allowed legally to take the homes of those Palestinians.
All this is only the tip of the mistreatment and violent misplacement of Palestinians. The only way to even hope for peace would be to hold the Isreali government accountable for the war crimes they've committed and continue to commit and to give back land and for God sake give them back autonomy and basic human rights!

The world has seen a lot of things coming that never came due to the diligent efforts of those seeking peace. A second US civil war, open war between the US and the Soviet Union, etc. And there are a lot still pending that we're hoping for peace but expecting war like China and Taiwan, and North and South Korea. Nobody expected normalization of relations with Israel and its neighbors to get as far as it has, especially considering what was happening with Palestine up to this point. Just because we strive for peace doesn't mean we've convinced ourselves war will never come.
The surprise here was the suddenness and severity without Israel or its allies being aware of the buildup. Everyone knew this would happen if the resources were gathered to do it, but people very reasonably thought the resources weren't there for this. Particularly with Russia rapidly buying up stock from this group's usual supplier.

My two cents: “The crisis the world didn’t see coming” is highly debatable. This would certainly be a surprise for people that either didn’t pay attention to the last 6 months of Iglobal affairs or if their news exposure is limited to one of the mainstream media outlets in the US. The US mainstream media does not provide us Americans with any valuable historical context for world events and doesn’t provide reliable journalism or an unbiased, honest perspective. Many Americans are woefully ill informed and lack much of the important context of understanding the world. Public discourse and debate between dissenting opinions is absent and this limits our ability to think critically of ourselves and properly analyze the world with some compassion and humility.

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is what taught me just how sheltered I was from the outside world when I was in college decades ago. When I was a teenager, I remember being sympathetic towards Palestine and their conditions under Israeli occupation, something that I began to research after 9/11. I carried that attitude into my first few years of college, until I encountered an Israeli professor in my C++ programing class. At some point during his lecture, he made comments about "irredeemable Palestinian terrorists" and I, being a hot-blooded teenager itching for a verbal altercation, immediately tried to spar with him on that subject. But instead of responding to me, he quietly marched toward my seat, stared coldly into my eyes with unfathomable rage, and whispered words that I couldn't quite hear. But his feelings and intended message were crystal clear: "You do not know SHIT about what life is like for either side in this conflict, and if you speak another word, I will strangle you on the spot." There were no theatrics, and very little was overtly conveyed, but I don't think I've ever felt anything that intense from another human in my entire life.
That kind of deep-rooted hatred, borne from a lifetime of bloodshed and open hostility, unrelenting political propaganda, constant and justified paranoia, and ingrained religious dogma; it's impossible to fully comprehend from our bubbles in the West. In the U.S., we have it so good that large portions of our population will absolutely lose their shit over slight flaws in their favorite luxury product, or a minor gaffe by their favorite celebrity, and treat it like it's the end of the world. But in places like Israel and Palestine (or in the countless war-torn parts of Africa, and so on), where daily life includes surprise rocket attacks and violent military occupation, driven by their own interpretations of God's Word, where every day your world very much _might_ end... I could do all the research I can, try to empathize as much as I like, but I don't think I can ever fully grasp how those people feel, and I hope I never have to.

I am a medical student at the American University of Beirut. The situation is really really worrying here in Lebanon. I won’t give my opinion on the situation in the neighboring country, but I will comment on the serious implications of dragging Lebanon into this war. To put it simply: Lebanon will not be able to survive the conflict if it gets involved. With the current economic crisis (that of course many of you has heard about), the lack of government (and still no president more than a year and a half later), and the overly stretched medical system just to name a few, the country is literally hanging on by a thread.
People here are worried about what is going to happen, and I am one of them. War is a truly truly truly terrible thing.

1 “This is the account of Shem, Ham and Japheth, Noah's sons, who themselves had sons after the flood.”
2 “The sons of Japheth: Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshek and Tiras.”

Read back to as far as Sykes-Picot in 1916, the secret agreement France-Britain agreement that damaged the Arab world so badly that it still has not recovered today. The short form is that Britain promised the Arabs independence and a whole undivided Arab nation on the condition that they supported the Britain against the Ottoman Empire. Upset with their poor treatment under the Ottomans, the Arabs agreed. Thus the Arab Revolt of 1916 began. The Ottomans were weakened, but the Arabs were also severely weakened. Meanwhile, France and Britain's had agreed in secret to simply ignore Britain's agreement with the Arabs and divvy it up as they pleased. This betrayal by Britain has caused an unbelievable amount of damage to the Arabs and they haven't had a chance to recover since the Arab Revolt of 1916.

I was born and raised in Israel and I did serve in the military, I was in the infantry, and yes, I am proud of my service for my country and I am a patriot, with that said, I have been living in the USA for almost 21 years now.
Simon did a great job presenting this new developing war the most neutral way possible, so far, of course. But I do want to add a few things, as this video is 2 days old now. From reports that I read from Israel, Netanyahu did get the Intel, he chose to turn his back and that's the result. Also, a few months ago, he ordered the military to move the majority of its forces to the west bank as he wants to fight terror pockets, that's the result of why it took the military so much time to respond. As for Hamas, I truly believe that not only Iran is behind this attack, but also the Iranian backed militants in Syria are involved with Hamas in it, I don't believe Hamas is that strong to do what they did on their own, but I could be wrong. Netanyahu has a lot to do with Hamas getting stronger and stronger every year, I can say whatever I want to say about Hamas, how cruel they are, they don't care about humans (including the Palestinians, not just the Israelis) and any other negative words you can find, Netanyahu is the exact same thing! You have given an excellent cursory summation of the critical context of this appalling and unanticipated assault. It is extremely difficult to offer a succinct overview of the motives for the conflict, but you have succeeded admirably. My own sense is that it is important for us to recognize that both Israel and Palestinians see the potential of of these tensions as existential in their nature. And that existential quality makes finding common ground to promote de-escalation or prospects for peace extremely problematic and perhaps ultimately impossible. Thus, while my prayers are for peace, the most likely prospect is for horrific war. Indeed, if Israel concludes that "mowing the grass" cannot work, it may seriously counter with an attempt to remove the grass entirely. And the implications of that strategy are apocalyptic.

The choice here, is as it has always been, is made by the aggressor. And as in 95% of all prior cases, the aggressor remains Hamas and the Gazans. Israelis want peace and security and prosperity- and not only for themselves, but the Gazans also. Ever wonder how that hyper dense Gazan city area is constantly rebuilt? Constantly lighted, provided clean water, and electricity? And fed? It is off the backs of the Israeli's who they seek to murder and genocide again and again and again for decades. One side offers an olive branch constantly, and more welfare and assistance than any other group in history to an attacker. And yet, the attacker remains brutal, escalatingly twisted and savage, and utterly thankless. Look what America did after 9/11. to scale, what Israel just experienced if it were the USA would be like a mid-cized city were blasted off the face of the earth by a tactical nuclear strike. Imagine our response in that case. Israel has more restraint and empathy than any nation in the history of mankind. Whenever they have had enough, no one on the planet has any right to criticize what they do afterwards.

Israel bombed the hospital and residential tower because that is where humas operates. They use their own Palestinian civilians as shields so that Israel has to kill innocents in order to kill terrorists. It’s so messed up. The good news is that Israel has made efforts to limits the amount of Palestinian citizens killed by sending messages telling them where bombs will be dropped. Unfortunately the terrorists need their civilians for shields to make Israel look bad. Once again that is why Humas operates from hospitals, schools, and apartments. They are maybe the worst people on earth. Pray for Israel.

I live in a suburb of Tel-Aviv just to its south. It was 3-4 AM at night last Friday, and I thought to myself "Oh f@#$ it, it's the weekend, I'll just sleep in until noon or so!"
I am awakened early in the morning and immediately hear an alarm sound, typical of an impending rocket attack from Gaza. I look at the clock on my smartphone and it's 6:30 AM, as I sprint, barefoot, down from my flat on the 3rd floor to the underground shelter. The rest of the events described and analyzed in this video then unfold before me in a completely erratic pace.
It is now the first time I'm legit living through one of the topics Simon covers. It feels... surreal.
