    King Louis' actual last words:
"I die innocent of all the crimes laid to my charge; I pardon those who have occasioned my death; and I pray to God that the blood you are going to shed may never be visited on France."
And as a bonus, Marie Antoinette's last words:
"Forgive me, sir, I didn't do it on purpose."
(It's an apology for having stepped on her executioner's foot as she walked towards the guillotine.)

To be honest I would love to have gotten a chance to know them personally. If I remember correctly King Louis was quite fascinated in the rest of the world while his wife Queen Marie was actually interested in the common lifestyle, even preferring to wear common clothing instead of the fancy stuff of the upper-class.

Wow. I learned little about the French Revolution in school. In what little I knew, it painted the aristocracy out to be the only bad guy, and the revolutionaries as fleckless heroes. Now I see that there were wrongs done on both sides. The aristocracy was corrupt, but the revolutionaries wanted petty revenge a few times. I didn't know all this happened in France's history.
My God. The revolutionaries became the very thing they rose up against. I had no idea.

Interestingly, many in the U.S. call what we had the War for Independence. We were not seeking to overthrow the British government. We just wanted to be independent. All the other revolutions in history were the overthrow of their sitting governments. The trick is, very few of those revolutions throughout history ever brought peace and freedom. They did do this to create a vacuum into which a new dictator hungry for power rushes in to fill. That brings more war, more terror, and you had one oppressive oligarchal government replaced with another at the end of the day.

some books that have the French Revolution/Napoleon/etc as their backdrop are
The Scarlet Pimpernel (a British guy basically is a masked vigilante who fights against an inspector of the Revolution)
Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell (two English Magicians do magic in England; one of them is sent to fight against Napoleon's armies)
The Count of Monte Cristo (helping Napoleon leads to the starting conflict)
Les Miserables (the remnants of Napoleon and the French Revolution influence the backstory and motivations for several characters)

  • @annajohnson8124
    @annajohnson8124 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There are a ton of American Revolution movies. My personal favorite is The Patriot (2000) because it shows a lot the social aspects of the war in the South (PatriotsVTories, slave impact, etc.), however the main character and the main bad guy are not entirely historically accurate for who they are based one. (Benjamin Martin = Francis Marion and several other US heroes. Col. Tavington = Banastre Tarleton (both are nicknamed 'The Butcher'). Even Light-horse Harry Lee is renamed to Col. Burwell). However, if you want to look more at the Founding Fathers, miniseries John Adams is good, Hamilton the musical, and Turn: Washington's Spies (tv show). Those are the more recent film contributions. None of them, sadly, go into the Native Americans' contributions to the war.
French Revolution, I'd suggest Marie Antionette (2006), starring Kirsten Dunst as her. Historically, Marie Antionette was rather quiet and humble (ex. apologizing to her executioner for stepping on his toe), and a lot of what's said about her pop-culturally is from the propaganda publications leading up to the revolution (ie: the "Let them eat cake" quote). This movie shows her struggles in getting into the French Court's good graces, her difficulties marrying Louis, and juxtaposes the French Court parties with the constant reminders that the common people are starving until the revolution arrives on their doorstep.
French Revolution into the Napoleonic Wars, BBC's late 90s- 2000's show, Horatio Hornblower. Each season is 3-4 hour and a half long episodes, and there's only 4 seasons, so it goes pretty quick. 2nd season (1999) is called Frogs and Lobsters, and is about the last royalist push in the French Revolution (1795) with the English helping the French royalists. It's one of my favorite sequences of the show, just because the French general is such a jerk (dude decides to bring his own guillotine to retake France).
Just some suggestions since you asked for films set in that time.

There are plenty of movies around the US Revolution. That said slavery wasn't much involved, the was the US Civil War, easy to mix up. The US Revolution, while it was less about killing loyalists (colonists loyal to the British) there was still violence against loyalist civilians. This included tar and feathering which was very brutal, and still killed people from the scalding tar.

Some intriguing facts. First Mari Antoinette was accused of many crimes at her trial and she stood there silent. She only spoke when they accused her of sleeping with her young son did she say anything saying to all the mothers here you know I would never do anything to my beloved child or something like that. Also Maximillian Rogs Pierre read a poem to the king while in school. Also if you look at king Louis last speech it’s actually quit beautiful but the drummers drowned out his voice but there was a lawyer taking down his final words.

If you want to know the difference read the Declaration of Independence and the declaration of the rights of man. The deceleration of independence is all about the rights of the individual and the declaration of the rights of man are about the collective against the individual. The French Revolution had the same problems as the Bolshevik Revolution just without the explicit Marxism because it just didn’t exist yet.

Well, the US revolution was one born out of the enlightenment and treated the people (not classes) as the center of power upon which the government is formed by consent, while the French revolution was one born out of proto-communism... hence the extreme violence, paranoia, idol-worship, and self-appointment to bureaucracies meant to serve as overlords to the classes (because people were just classes, not actual human beings with any individual rights)

Since you were interesting in a movie, there's one about the French Revolution that in my opinion is really great although really long, was made in 1989 and is made of 2 parts that united last over 5 hours.
Here's the playlist with the two parts with english subtitles (need to activate TH-cam captions) if you're willing to give it a try despite the length (as you can imagine, it being long also means it's really a lot more detailled and nuanced than the OverSimplified video) :

There's nothing wrong with googling random topics inspired by the videos/shows you watch. I've been doing this for years. Especially when I'm watching a video based on historical events or shows made in other countries. It's a great a way learn about topics you might not have ever thought of.

When you were comparing this to the American Revolution, it seemed like you said something like that the American one ended slavery or something but that was our civil war that happened almost a hundred years later. Actually during the French Revolution, they outlaw slavery (although Napoleon reinstated it later)

@17:00 That's not a very good question. Of course there are films on the American/French/Russian Revolution.
