I honestly, have a desktop that someone threw out, and, even though the Windows on it is out of date, what I did, is I connected to the internet, and downloaded a bunch of shareware. Including, this game, and the one I have the most experience with, Keen 4.
Ugh, it looks awful to be honest. I mean maybe not in it's own right, but it doesn't have a good keen vibe about it, to be honest, this was a childhood game for me and I don't think any reboot would sit right.
Played this 20 years ago when i was still a kid. This is the first time i saw the ending because i was too young and too stupid to figure out that last level :(
It's famous among PC players of the early 90's. Back when I was a child everyone had at least some of the game. Personally I had all but Keen 5. Even had Keen Dreams which I called Keen 7.
Let's be honest here. I played Commander Keen 1-5 when I was a kid and liked it. Much later I played Mario Bros 3 and Mario World. Those were like 100 times better, even without nostalgia bonus.
Wow... I didn't know you could skip levels and STILL win. Man, this and Duke Nukem were my childhood! So thankful I grew up in an incredible age of gaming. And even more thankful for a dad who taught me how to play them! Also, yes the freaking wolf used to scared the heck out of me... as well as the huge green monsters. Oh to be a kid again..
My long lost brother! I'm kidding, but I would too. My dad actually had a computer, it was I believe Windows 3.1, or something like that, where he set up different accounts for his kids to play games. I don't know what happened to that computer, my guess is that it was sold to pay for his medical treatment, or we just plain forgot it. I would still use it, if I had it. But Commander Keen, awesome childhood, at least that aspect of it.
I have to say I'm not a gamer at all but I grew up on Commander Keen and still love it to this day. I can't believe how many memories come back to me when I watch this game!
GOD DAMN! I'm only 15 now, born in 1995. So I really have to appreciate how lucky I was to have a dad that''s into, and was into, retro gaming. This was one of the FIRST (I'm talking first 3) games I ever played. This vid is bringing back so many memories! Can't believe I forgot about this masterpiece.... and the countless hours I spent looking for secrets and trying to get every item. :p
The 9 methods of death: Fire Spikes Water Jumping into vines Jumping into icicles Pat-Pats (what looks like a clamshell) Gargs Vorticons The Tank Robot’s green laser Any others I’m missing?
A lot of memories with these very quick walkthrough. I used to play with the three episodes on a 386sx... And I had recently finished the three last ones when I rediscovered an old 486 with a sound blaster 16...sweet!
Unbeleavable, only one mistake in the hole game at 4:41! And the control of commander keen was not easy! I loved this game and played it as a kid for a long long time. Thx for uploading! Very nice!! :-)
Woooo, Thanks for this video man ! This game gas great, i remember when me and my cousin used to play it like 4 - 5 hours, and trying to pass all the levels !
THe Bean-With-Bacon-Megarocket! I almost forgot this. This game and all other Keen-parts were sooo great, and so revolutionary... thanks for that computergame-history-lesson man :-)
Finally! After 10 years....I returned to my precious..man I remember how I loved this game...and I'm going to download it and play the shit out of it! Hell yeah!
This game is a LEGEND from Id software Most of the people know Id from doom or quake. BUT you all can find Commander Keen and the Dope Fish in both those games. ;) (check the easter eggs) Also the idea for creating this game remains absolutely astonishing! Thanks for posting. ciao!
I have fond memories of playing this game when I was a kid. I remember back in 1997 I was playing it on Halloween. I finished the entire game. It was an awesome night!
Man,this is how Next gen will look like,I swear. Shit,I don't know if 1080p HDTV will be enough to support the awesome graphics. On a serious note, the commander keen series are AWESOME. Grew up with these games, specially Keen dreams,4,5 and 6.
@@unbridledenthusiasm I grew up playing Keen 4 at my grandma's house only with PC speaker sounds. Nowadays, I still play this game that way, even if I could tourn on the Soundblaster stuff.
@Neboh420 Me too, never understood a thing of it XD But brings back a loooot of memory's now.. I also vagely remember a game with a submarine do you accidently know such a game ?
Great vid :) I really liked the way you avoided the first 3 vorticons - you are either very skilled or very lucky. I wonder which of the two can be finished faster - Keen1 or Keen3 (you can reach the the final level very fast if you know which way to choose). @ Moschusochse - looks like Duke Nukem, but it was made earlier.
There were some great games during that time. I actually have a Windows XP computer, a desktop, for the very reason, that I can download shareware dos games on it, and not have to run them in a browser. I was born in 1988, but I do remember a lot of these msdos games, largely because of my father.
Same here, been playing this since I was four and I still play it. I've never done a speedrun before though, I tend to go for points rather than speed.
Bought the games on Steam today. I beat episode 1 in around 45 - 60 minutes. I screwed up a lot and got down to zero lives left but I managed to finish. I spent untold hours on these games as a kid. We had the full version of 1-3 and the shareware episode 4. Never played 5, 6, or dreams though.
I loved this game when I was a kid, me and my sister played it for hours and hours back in the early 90s on dads computer. Usually keen 1, 2 and 4. For some reason we didn't like keen 3 that much.
+Megan O (Shorty) Yes! But technically, the Teddy Bear from Secret Agent is the Teddy Bear from this game. =P Keen 1 came out earlier, and in Secret Agent help file, it mentions Keen in the description of the Teddy Bear.
Don't mind me, just coming here to pay my respects to the original.
oh man I remember playing this when I was like 5 or 6 I wish I could remember it better
Same
Same, on my old Windows 95 pc, having to go through ms dos to open it... Those were the days!
I honestly, have a desktop that someone threw out, and, even though the Windows on it is out of date, what I did, is I connected to the internet, and downloaded a bunch of shareware. Including, this game, and the one I have the most experience with, Keen 4.
I know exactly what you mean... somehow this game has always made me want Pepsi. Hmm.
And a great Sims/retro game enthusiastic, collector of retro stuff legend was born
kinda weird that I didn't noticed you here before

Reminds me of my childhood, so good memories, makes me sad and happy at the same time. Cheers for posting :)
And to think this is the grandson of Bj Blazkowitz and the Father of The Doom Slayer
Not in the canon game.
How is Keen not more famous? It's an incredible platformer. Except for the last one. Friggin' veggies.
It's famous among PC players of the early 90's. Back when I was a child everyone had at least some of the game. Personally I had all but Keen 5. Even had Keen Dreams which I called Keen 7.

Ahh the nostalgia. I forgot that Billy's parents were so neglectful.
Would play this all the time on my dads computer when I was a little kid
My long lost brother! I'm kidding, but I would too. A lot of memories with these very quick walkthrough. I used to play with the three episodes on a 386sx...
And I had recently finished the three last ones when I rediscovered an old 486 with a sound blaster 16...sweet!
Wow, that was a great speed run. It's hard to imagine more than a few seconds better even being possible.

this game was in my grandpa's old broken PC. oh the nostalgia...
A respectable run through. Very nice.

My favorite computer game as a kid. Damn the memories...
I'm sure it's fun, but those sound effects would drive me up the wall.
noooooooooooooo, they are so amazing
Part of the experience, especially when you grew up playing them.
Before sound cards were common
I have a soft spot for the pc speaker, sometimes it was rough but I love it in this game (and a few others such as Duke nukem 1)
@@unbridledenthusiasm I grew up playing Keen 4 at my grandma's house only with PC speaker sounds.

Nice memories.
This game was so fucking beast when I was a kid.

This game used to frustrate me a lot ..
Haha wow, you make it look a lot easier than I remember it being as a kid. :P
Great vid :)
I really liked the way you avoided the first 3 vorticons - you are either very skilled or very lucky.
I wonder which of the two can be finished faster - Keen1 or Keen3 (you can reach the the final level very fast if you know which way to choose).
@ Moschusochse - looks like Duke Nukem, but it was made earlier.
brings back memories
I loved this game when I was a young boy.
Those big green things and THAT WOLF scared me like hell back in the day.
Every sound from this game is imprinted on my memory.
I wish I wouldve been around for the early days of DOS gaming. I feel like I really missed something.
yea man you did. I feel old now haha
There were some great games during that time. I actually have a Windows XP computer, a desktop, for the very reason, that I can download shareware dos games on it, and not have to run them in a browser. I was born in 1988, but I do remember a lot of these msdos games, largely because of my father.
