Having walked the grounds & read the book on the Niles yard, I really enjoyed seeing some shots of what was left of the Niles yard in the PC era. Thank you for posting these images. I salute all those railroaders who worked there.
I am just old enough to remember the PC going through Niles to South Bend. Like many kids I was fascinated with trains and still am. I used to do a lot of HO model railroading a LONG time ago, but lets face it - it takes up space. Now there are train simulators. I saw this video and said to myself "I'm going to re-create this route in Train Simulator" Thankfully Train Simulator integrates with Google Maps so I can get the basics. I also have maps of abandoned rail lines and from what I can see they're usually correct but not always. I'll post my project here once I get a basic template going. I know I'll need input from folks on the Niles Yard, French Paper and south of US-12 so stay tuned.
I have done that and there are several videos of it on the channel. Could use more scenery improvements but tried to keep all the track as close to scale as possible. Covers all the way from Cherry Street at South Bend Mainline to Amtrak Main in Niles plus ND and St marys spur.
Amazing footage - thanks for sharing this! I never would've thought I'd see video of Niles Yard. At the end of the video there's a high hood geep with caboose directly in front of a GP38 with a train. Was the first loco helping the GP38 pull their train? It almost looks like it cuts away from the GP38 as it comes closer to the camera

Super, thanks. Great footage. I liked the backing-track too. Have good Holiday and I look forward to plenty more posts in 2024.
Many thanks!

It does cut away. Part of their maneuvering to get around and switch cars.
Would have loved to see closeups of the crewman. I'm always looking for my dad in one of these videos. He was my hero.
