    I agree with you Matt. My ex-wife had a Q5 and drove it for 5 years before trading it in for an X3 Sport but, other than the better handling of the BMW, I really missed the more luxurious interior and more comfortable and spacious seats in the Audi. She had no problems with either car, but then again, was buying them new. Another good and perfectly honest review.

    I have bought a Q5 2.0 TDI quattro (my 2011) in 2017 with manual transmission, and it works very well. With little manteinance and timing belt ok the car it's very perfect inside and outside (finished with a nice detailing Gyeon). No scratches, no elettrical problem no other issue in general, no strange consumption. In any case I follow the regular services in Audi and sometimes in not Audi service. Keep an eye on the Fuel Pump that sometime have an autodistuption. I suggest this SUV today that for me have a nice build quality in general! Nice car!

    Excellent video as usual, Matt. My wife has a 2012 Q5 S Line 2.0TDi automatic with an Elite remap (210hp) and it's surprisingly quick, handles well for a jacked up "A4" and is very reliable but noisy. It comes with leather and heated seats which are very handy most of the year round if one has back problems!
    Wind noise from the huge wing mirrors can be a problem unless they've had a factory fitted modification which ours hasn't so we tape up the seams with black insulation tape.
    The doors and dashboard finish are somewhat plasticky for a car of this value and it's not insulated very well thus the road noise. Tyres can make a big difference to road noise too.
    The sound system is awful - very thin but not uncommon from German vehicles without upgraded hifi.
    Economy with the remap is outstanding and we get 35+ mpg in London and 45 mpg on at motorway speeds.
    Overall I'm not a fan and much prefer driving my old 2007 L322 Vogue SE but it always starts unlike the Range Rover!
    If you're in the market for a family estate then you could do a lot worse.

    Another great review. Ran a 2.0 TDI Quattro S line manual fews years back and really liked it. Dark peal metallic blue with suede and leather seats and 20 inch alloys. It looked the dogs. Try and get one with the B&O sound system as it's amazing. Even my one owner low mileage example with full Audi service history developed a couple of electrical faults . As recommended here keep some cash for unexpected faults.

    Pretty sure VAG say their gear boxes are "sealed and need no servicing", which really means it's not going to need servicing under warranty or on a pre-paid plan. It's a mechanical doohickey with spinning bits of metal in oil, it will need servicing.

    • @adrianwhitehead1950
      @adrianwhitehead1950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      VAG I suspect, do say that but they’re not know for being completely honest. Audis of that era are renowned for the fragility of their DCT gearboxes and you should expect to have them repaired at some point which is not true of the BMW/Merc alternatives. If you go into ownership with that in mind and/or are lucky, then they’re not too bad.

  • @adrianwhitehead1950
    @adrianwhitehead1950 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    A gearbox, IMHO, should last the life of the car and not 95k miles. You’re right though in that their not alone; BMW have gone down the DCT route with their latest 1 series - and associated X range - and gone away from torque converter autos which is a shame as they’re good for the life of the car. An honest, accurate and informative review as ever and agree that the Q5 is the sweet spot and it looks as if it’s aged well and will make a good alternative to a newer Kia/Hyundai.

    Would be interesting to see how its brother the Macan compares 😉
    A shame how 'luxury' German cars can't go over 100k without a new clutch/DMF or similar expensive gearbox work when Japanese cars I've had managed to exceed 140k with only minor work such as a new alternator, o2 sensor and some DIY adjustment of the window regulator. That having said in my current 1st gen Tiguan, despite dieselgate, a new DMF/Clutch ~95k, new bushes under warranty and some DIY elbow grease cleaning the 'throttle body' in the 2.0 TDI, the driving position, refinement and general niceness is still hard to match compared to the Japanese/Korean rivals I've driven, still consider it to be my favourite 'all-rounder' car.

    I have a 2016 190 TDI S-LINE Manual. It's not very interesting or exciting to drive but it is well-engineered. The boot is small for a car this size. B& O Sound is underwhelming. The heated seats are great in the winter. Quick enough when you need it to be. The metal trim at the gearstick is prone to unsightly dents. The glovebox has very little space because of the owner's manual shelf. 20-inch alloys Kerb easily. Dual Mass flywheel was an issue on my previous Golf. The indication of a problem is if you hear a rattling noise with the gearbox in neutral when you press the clutch. Not currently an issue on my 60K car. Average 38 MPG. If you stall the car when stopping at the traffic lights at the same time as the eco engine switch off cuts in, the electronics on the car get confused and you have to turn the ignition off, put it in neutral. It can take about 10 seconds to restart the car. 190 BHP is the power to go for-150 too low for the weight. If you tow a boat or horsebox, buy one with the factor installed towbar preparation(improved cooling system) as they overheat if you don't.

I had considered another Xtrail, Subaru Forester etc.,wanted something SUV like and something different. The Q5 came up at the same price as an X trail or Forester but it had 80-100,000kms less on the clock for the same money. So far it has been a fabulous car and chalk and cheese compared to my chicken out choices. I haven't had a problem with the heater controls but the sat nav is from another time. I know that Q5s have issues like every other car but so far these issues are no more difficult to solve than the ones I had with the Xtrail. Btw I just did the DSG service.

    Agree the Q5 is the best among the Q range. Got myself a 3.0tdi with the 7 speed. Very powerful, smooth and economical i stay under 8L/100km, unless pulling a trailer then it jumps to 11. It is very agile for it’s size. Unfortunately am also out of luck with the gearbox, am looking at a complete rebuild for about 3.000€ which is about 1/3 of the cars current value...that hurts. And there is a huge blind spot, its the inside review mirror, at the right angle and distance it will hide a whole person or worse a car approaching from the right.
    And am pretty sure all Q5 were equipped with Quattro as standard 🤔

    I found the rear seats in the Q5 horrible compared to the X3 and if fitting child seats in the back next to no room for people sitting in the front, I couldn't even open the glove box fully.

    Hi matt
    Mike is great picking up everything ,expensive Mike's pick up all sorts of background noise as they would if 2 of you were in a video, that's the confusion many think old Mike was better as its not S good at picking up second voice ( sound ) you might see it in settings for personal not conference? Anyway last 2 videos of German whips ( down with the yout ) show how you have look and search for basic extras that should be on most cars , my son just before Xmas has brought a A200 amg line ( face-lift 2019 ) model now the dash in that code sat navigation with electronic dials are a wonder , but half didn't work like nfc in centre console, so he rxnv up anx said half the amg pack is not working , they said not to worry we have to assign the car to you and it will reprogram to your spec, and guess what , 2 hours later system update and more toys on it working than an Ann summers party , 👍👍👍 very nice cars top spec , but with all the top brands they make you pay for it , but have merc got this covered by all the toys on the car physically being there just using the software upgrade or downgrade to make you pay more ????? Great videos as ever pal, good luck in 2021 👍👍👍💯

    • @richardcrossley5581

      Ford used the Fusion name in different markets for different vehicles:
      US: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Fusion_(Americas)
      Europe: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Fusion_(Europe)
      Since you're asking about a "hybrid", I suspect that would be the Ford Mondeo Hybrid in the UK.

    We just sold our 2nd gen Q5. It wasn’t very reliable. The Audi Pre Sense (Crash Assistant) failed over 14 times in the 2 years we owned it. Passenger wiring harness needed to be replaced. MMI screen blackouts, Parking sensor issues, and it didn’t feel as quick as an X3. Alright car but the 2nd gen is unreliable

  • @christianvik3400
    @christianvik3400 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To recommend a diesel engine just because it aparently is cheaper in use is unserious. It is the driving pattern that should decide this! Driving a diesel on short runs of a couple of miles a day, often in cold or wet wheather causes a diesel car a lot of problems after some time ; the diesel particulate filter may clog up (on Asian cars one has to buy s new one), the EGR valve may fail (often costs a fortune to replace), you will probably need an extra heater (expensive in the aftermarket), the valve tops may get burnt and so on. Are you only driving less than 50 miles a day a petrol engine is always smartest.
