When my mom passed in 1973 at a very young age, I would just put my earphones on and curl up listening to her albums. She helped me get through a very painful period of my life. LOVE HER!!!
Words of wisdom from an artist who I just became familiar with four weeks ago. Laura Nyro brings tears of joy and sorrow to my core and for that I'm grateful. I'm emotionally moved and inspired by her gift of music more than most other artists. She is a rarity among musicians in that she provides absolute "Eudaimonia" to my being and temporary respite from the doldrums of existence.
Laura Nyro made me cry listening to her gentile peaceful response to life. Her words and personal stories are a prayer to me Laura Nyro I did not know until a few months ago. The meaning in her lyrics are of high intellect and wisdom of experiences. What a mother.... She’s got her priorities right. She’s one of my new favorite artists. Her inspiration moves me
I am 50 years old, born in 1967. I have loved music from the 60's every since I was 7 years old, and to this day, it's pretty much all I listen to. Having said that, I am really embarrassed that I just discovered Laura! Of course I know all of the songs she wrote for the 5th Dimension, Blood Sweat and Tears...etc. But I had no idea that Laura was such an amazing singer in her own right. She was such an incredible talent, and I had no idea about her existence! So, as of today, September 19th, 2017...I have discovered the beautiful Laura Nyro. Rest In Peace sweet lady...and thank you for the incredible legacy you left behind!
Rob and Michael, I was just thinking the SAME THING today. I just discovered her very, very recently. I was born in 1963 and remember music from the late '60s--like when the Beatles' Hey Jude and Let It Be first came out (on AM radio!). I have an older brother and sister and I remember hearing Joni Mitchell and other singers and groups from that era but not Laura Nyro. SUCH a talent and so genuine--not a part of the music industry machine and neither a byproduct of it, either. So glad I discovered her! She's one of my very favorites.
Listen! Laura Nyro is so comfortable and lighthearted. The sound of her laughter is so warm. It's almost unbearable because . . . I miss Laura a lot. Don't you? When I first saw her sing in the early seventies I remember she sat at the piano and went right into a song, and I thought "Oh, my god. She really does sound like that."
So many incredible singers sang Laura's songs but the way Laura sang her songs was very different. The meaning was very heavy when Laura sang. I think there was some personal content that gave her singing the debth and sincerity that it had. She was a very deep thinker and she seemed to examine her life in the songs and when she sang them the meaning was different than it was when others sang her songs. The songs themselves were so great and that is why the success of others with her material was due in part to the song itself, even apart from Laura. Interesting how Coltrane influenced her phrasing...she is so jazzy.
Saw Laura a few times in performance. San Diego, NYC. Suddenly I find the Angel In The Dark album. Thank you, angel Laura. Thanks for posting these interviews Richard!!!
I’ve seen her live three times and and was lucky enough to have a few conversations with her and her autograph. She was a very sweet soul and I do miss her so much. I love her later music the most!
Ironically I was born in 1965 in Danbury Hospital where Laura passed away....Laura ,Karen Carpenter and Joni Mitchell Carole King Carly Simon.....there are not and will most likely never be Goddesses like these to sing on the Earth again....I ❤️ and literally worship these truly BEAUTIFUL and ANGELIC Spirits and they have my ❤️ !!! Thank You All Truly My Goddesses and TRUE music I believe never dies.
Saw Laura in LA back in the late 60’s @ I think the Troubadour- been a huge fan since, I regret never meeting her when I toured in the early 70’s with Ruben & the Jets
What a sense of humor on that girl! To be able to laugh at the whole thing is such a gift. And also achieving simplicity is no small feat in this complicated world so... that's a process well worth the undertaking. God bless the soul of Laura Nyro.
The importance of a real interviewer. A well-chosen guest and smart questions. It's a treasure for future generations. Thank you so much, Richard Knight, Jr.
You two kids were playing in the garden & having such a great time with great vibes! There's nothing better than a energy flow like that. No judgements. Just exchanging ideas on how & what & when & where. You're so sweet with Laura and she's so adorable and appreciated the opportunity to reconnect with you!
Christmas and the Beads of Sweat is my fav Every song a gem Upstairs by a Chinese Lamp and Map to the Treasure are two of the most sensual and/or downright erotic songs i've ever heard Poverty Train was the first song of hers i heard way back when Blew me away Never looked back
You can also do Nested in your spare time, which is worthy of a grammmy, then just also do, "Season of Lights." which is one of the most underrated pieces of music ever. Maybe, a tad blow by me, but, still, I absolutely love this song as one of my favorites ever in life.
Let me ask y'all if she's not a genius then who is? In my humble opinion the simplicity was already there. She had responsibilities and those can complicate things but....the simplicity I think she's speaking of here is where you're completely centered and focused in spite of the stormy world throwing lightening bolts at your dreams.
So many geniuses died too soon because of drugs or loneliness. Laura's approach to success was a very healthy one. Her songs answer to the question of whether she was a genius. I say, just listen to the songs.
I agree. Laura Nyro was decidedly a G.E.N.I.U.S. Her music occupied a different dimension from other singer-songwriters-pianists. Where others leave off, she begins. The beauty of her melodies, her chord progressions, her voice, her phrasing were unsurpassed. The world lost a genius when she died so young.
Rex Reed, one of the toughest critics of all time described New York Tendenberry as a masterpiece, equivalent to anything done by George Gershwin. That is identical to being described as a genius
@@theelectricant98 She actually knew she did not, but did not want to alarm her fans. During that time she was working on a new album Angel in the Dark. A beautiful piece or work done while she was literally on her deathbed and in excruciating pain.
Thoroughly enjoying this interview... Lovely to hear her voice and thoughts. A magnificent artist whose music meant so much to me...

I’m so sorry about your mom. But, but happy that this music helped you .

Rob Scott.. Wow I wrote the same exact thing under a different video. Cept I was born in 1964 and music was a love from age 5.

Thinking the exact same thing. I was born in 66, and LOVE 60's and 70's music. Also just discovered Laura Nyro. I appreciate her creative genius.

I just found out about her past month or two...just incredible artist! Gone to soon. 😢

My favorite musician
Laura’s laugh was so adorable. You really had to connect with her to bring it out. ❤
hi chuck
I tried to interview her at the BumperShoot in Seattle in the early 90s. I got on the reporters list. Chickened out.
Richard, I always love hearing this.

I found Laura in college around 1969. She’s in me.. she’s fun and her music is too special for me to say.
Revisiting, Richard, you were fantastic...in bringing out her fantastic. Talk about a rapport.
She was always so real in her interviews. She would be such an interesting person to converse with.

“If it didn’t come out, then it ain’t coming out.” --- For the most part this is still true, although the demos from her 1st album recently did.
