I remember watching this back in high school and having the exact same reaction: "Who are these people? What are there powers? What the heck is a Spirit Detective? WHAT IS GOING ON?????" Eventually my brain just settled on "its people with superpowers punching each other", and that was good enough for me at the time.

As a young person growing up on 90’s “anime” -Pokémon, dragonball, DBZ and later the toonami shows (cowboy bebop, all the Gundam series, outlaw star) I was always browsing the anime section at blockbuster. I rented this before ever seeing it on toonami/adult swim

Though my first exposure to YYH was its initial run on Adult Swim pre-Toonami, I did manage to snag up both of these YYH movies from a long discontinued store chain called Media Play which is now a fond memory. Man its probably going on 20 years since I've even taken the DVDs out of the case, but I never got rid of them for some reason. They just feel like these rare relics of the 90s and remind me of a simpler time when humanity peaked as a whole. Something just told me to hold onto them all these years.

everytime I rewatch this show I'm blown away at exactly how good it is.
Bruh the first episode with Yusuke's funeral makes me cry a little every single time. The way all the people in his life really care for him and were so hurt at the loss of his young life. It was so real. That episode really draws you into the show. Honestly, the english script writers and voice cast just did a phenomenal job delivering YuYu to the west.

I bought this on DVD when Suncoast Video had their going-out-of-business sale. I got 4 copies for like, $3 apiece, intending to give them to my anime-loving friends, but they already had their own. I found them in a box of movies the other day, still wrapped. Looked them up, they go for $80-$100 EACH now!

It's weird that I just discovered and watched this movie the other day and now I'm seeing info and talk about it pop up everywhere. I was shocked to find out an English dub happened before the anime series got one. And hoo boy, it's just doesn't feel right without the Funimation voice actors...

@Brandon Probably licensing issues. There was another Yu Yu Hakusho OVA, Eizou Hakusho, that wasn't dubbed until 2011 due to a rights hang-up. Same with The Golden Seal special, which also has an alternate English dub that was produced before Funi started on the TV series.

The Kurama voice is so weird because it actually does sound very similar to the voice he'd later get from Funimation. Like if you showed me that clip and said it was John Burgmeier, I'd believe it.

I suppose technically, this was my first exposure to Yu Yu Hakusho. When I say technically, because I didn't watch the movie but Anime Abandons review of it. And I was completely lost, not just what the movie was about but what was happening at all. No frame of reverence of the voice actors. I forgot Eric Staurt and Veronica Taylor of Pokemon fame were in this.

This was my first experience with Yu Yu Hakusho, years before Adult Swim. I remember seeing it in an ad for mail-away VHS anime in a comic book; then I saw the VHS at the comic store and scooped it up. I grabbed this, Venus Wars, Ruin Explorers, and Ninja Scroll. Watching it the first time, I was confused by the lack of explanation of the world and characters, but at that age the cool fight scenes and music made up for that.

I remember renting this one at Blockbuster back in the 90s. The story was very straightforward and didn't realize there was a dedicated series already established. I just ran with it and thought it was entertaining. For a cash grab this looks VERY impressive even today. The characters and animation are expressive and beautifully detailed. A far better production compared to the crap out today considering this is a stand alone story.

This was my 1st exposure to YUYU and I liked it ! Although there were many movies released by the U.S.without the series to back them up. They mainly released them because of their overseas popularity and hoped it would catch fire with US audiences. Some examples are Ghost Sweeper and even Lum's movies ( although oddly enough, the subtitled series was released in the states by another company...Animeigo).

CPM had the rights to the movie before the series got released in the states. What shocks me is it's never gotten a redub despite its popularity. Hell, Lupin the third- Secret of Mamo and Castle of Cagliostro both got redubs. Also, the villain of the Yuyu movie(90 min version) was modeled after Dark Schneider from Bastard!!!

I am actually in a very similar situation as you. I love this anime and the English dub cast. I found your video because I am in the middle of rewatching the show again myself. Anyways I want to say that the movie actually was my first exposure to yu yu hakusho and I saw it in the Philippines when I was a kid before moving to the US. I thought it was so cool at the time. Then when the anime finally came out I never knew the movie was Yu Yu Hakusho until much later. When I finally made the connection I was like "wait I have to see that movie again". But since I had gotten used to the Funimation dub I was so confused as to why they sounded so different. Suffice to say I never finished my second viewing of the movie and still havent to this day. Weird outro here but I'm so happy someone finally cleared this up for me.

Oh wow I remember this movie. It was a couple years after YYH finished airing on TV that I came across it. I was so blown away I had no idea there was a movie! And when I watched it I felt so....violated when I heard their voices. I think I got about 10 minutes in and I couldn't bare to continue so I switched over to the subbed version. Until that time I had never heard the subbed version of YYH lol It was because of this movie that I had finally heard it in Japanese and while I did like it, my heart still belongs to the dubbed version.

I genuinely love this movie, I'm always shocked to see long time YYH fans trash on it, but I get it not having the dub really does hurt its rewatch value. I like to watch it sub and just have it be my one way to engage with the sub. It was the gateway for YYH for my best friend before I made them marathon the series with the funi dub. I view this movie in a similar vein to most of the DBZ movies and I think it holds up decently when compared to a lot of those.

I had both movies on VHS back in the 90´s and was also the first time i saw something from the anime, i knew of it and was intrigued by its world and look and that fascination was enough to me to have a good time with them...Of course i did not get much of its background but the spectacles in them selves made it a cool ride....Also in the 90´s one was not spoiled with a constant stream of media like in these times so much of animes/manga had a bigger mystic around them which i guess helped them to be a bit "better" then one would judge them to be now.

I saw this first and really enjoyed it 😎 When I got old enough and of course the internet was a thing, I looked up to see if I could find more of it and bought this Malaysian Subbed (I think) version and was my first exposure to the series as a whole! And I loved the world and the characters and was sorry to hear how everything ended and anime had to wrap it up. I'm still patiently waiting for someone to go back and say "this has potential" and maybe some day, writers and artists who also grew up with this would remember the love they have for these characters, and continue their story on.

YYH is also near and dear to my heart. When I heard the dub, I immediately turned it off to watch Lanipator's abridged YYH: Poltergeist Report, and I have never laughed so hard in my life (had to constantly put my hands over my mouth since I was in a Public Library) 😅😅😅

  • @YamiSora
    @YamiSora ปีที่แล้ว

I stumbled across this one by pure chance in the 90s when I was in Blockbuster. At first I didn't recognize it since the VHS cover said Poltergeist Report as the main title and then "Yu Yu Hakusho" in tiny lettering underneath. I found it right around the time the show was about halfway through the Dark Tournament arc in the US, so I felt like I had just enough information to get through this one. I liked it just fine as a kid, but even back then I really missed the Funimation dub and found this one to be extremely jarring.

  • @taragreene

So I first saw this movie around the same time I got into the anime when it was airing on Toonami. I saw it at Blockbuster and begged my parents to rent it for me every time we went (despite me being like 8 and the movie being rated 16+). I still hold the movie very dearly, and as much as I adore the Funi voice cast I still find a kind of dated charm to the English cast of the movie. Hell I even found Kurama's story about his old partner to be really compelling. I do hope this movie gets redubbed and redistributed one day, especially since YYH is pretty relevant with the announcement of the live action series. It's unlikely, but I can still hope

Got it home, and knowing nothing yet about subs/dubs and broader anime production, I could not remotely understand why the voices were different. I couldn't tell you a single thing about the movie to this day other than my utter confusion and upset over them "not sounding right" after being so excited to find a YYH movie.

I’d say your right that most of the anime cash grab movies suck ass, but man many of the DBZ movies were just amazing. I’d argue several of the DBZ movies stood toe to toe with the best of the series itself. The original broly movie, the cooler movie, tapion movie, and fusion reborn were all classics. They had interesting plots, pretty good pacing, solid animation, god-like fights, and villains fans adore to this day.

While this movie wasn't my first experience with YYH I do enjoy it. I own this movie on the forerunner of the modern DVD on two disks from Japan. In Japanese with no subtitles. I never seen the serie in English if watch everything in Japanese. But I can understand the love people can have for voices. I still prefer the Japanese voices but I remember loving the dubs of The Slayers ova used to watch video. I agree the music was great. I loved the end song of the movie. I was overjoyed when I found a copy of the movie's OVA in a anime store here in the Netherlands. Heck I even bought the manga of the two movies what where released in Japan.

I remember watching this movie years ago as a kid. Then a year or two ago found it in youtube, kinda excited to see it and the voices were so grating I couldn’t finish it. I don’t recall if I originally watched it sub, but the voice acting is so terrible I assume I must have.
As for the movie itself, I actually like it. I like the expanded lore, like kurama and his subplot. Yusuke’s and Kuwabara’s fights are all actually really good, the best darkness flame from hiei. The animation is a little spotty in places, but really good at other parts, especially the opener with Koenma being flooded, just looks great! In total if you can get over the voice actors, or can watch it sub and like yu yu hakusho, I recommend it.

When i finished this show sad as hell wanting more. When i heard there was movies me being excited to see it just to see the squad smack talk and fight. Didnt even get to 5 mins in and seeing funimation didnt do em i just left em. those 2 new adapt ova i forced myself to watch it because it was back story to hiei and kurama.

I'm not really shocked that kuwabara's best fight by far was only in a non canon movie. Hell I would say he's at his best here.
    * No yukina power up crap that ruined the Risho fight.
    * The enemy he fights and wins against actually stays dead, no stupid junk where togashi has kuwabara's win be a "win" then again it might have been simply because even then they didn't want to do that much with him.
    * Whoever wrote the fight actually tried with him and thinking about how he would use his abilities
    * When he fights the demon minions, his style starts showing at least some refinement.
There's still some things that stops it from being perfect. But it's not bad.

I was able to ask Justin Cook in I think 2021, and I seem to remember he said the rights to dub it were still technically tied up and Funimation can’t touch it.
Oh! and the 2 OVAs in 2018 were finally dubbed and they are on the 30th anniversary box set

On the topic on anime movies I would recommend the Psycho Pass Movie that's it's actually canon. It's after the second season of the anime and it's a nice movie.

I remember this coming out in the theaters in the Philippines in '98, iirc. I lived in Palawan which is an island province so I imagine it was a later showing than the national premiere. My brother and I worked our asses just to have enough money to watch it lol.
