This is like printing a sheet of social security numbers on a flyer, then stapling it to a telephone pole, and blaming the person who saw the flyer for noticing it.

Yeah I think Linus & Luke from The WAN Show put it very well- It’s like an author putting a bunch of SSNs in the index of a book and when you flip back to it and go “uhh, guys, shouldn’t put that there” they go “You weren’t supposed to look there, that’s illegal!”

It's okay to be technologically illiterate. There's no obligation to have a general awareness of everything, especially when they don't pertain to your job function. But it's idiotic to double to down on mistakes made out of your illiteracy and continue to ignore people when they're trying to explain to you, you're wrong and why you're wrong. The governor needs to check his ego, apologize and focus on politicising something else.

5:20 I really hope I never get this clueless about technology. This is just embarrassing

Any high school or college student who has taken a singular programming or web design course knows that this man has absolutely ZERO idea what he is talking about.

Let me answer those questions for you governor:
    > Why would anyone be doing that?
Curiosity? People take apart stuff to learn all the time.
    > Why would you remove social security numbers from the system?
He did not remove numbers from "the system". Your system voluntarily sent him (and anyone else who browsed that page) those numbers.
    > No body has the right to do that
Of course we do. You can't send your users a webpage and then cry when they look at it.
    > Why would you take anyone's personal information?
He didn't. You gave it to him (and everyone else who browsed that page).
    > It's against the law to do this.
    Again, it really isn't.
    > take peoples information
We've already gone over this, Mike. People don't your stuff when you give it to them.
    > Decoders
FFS. You realize that there are people who can read base64 and hex directly without "decoders", right? Base64 is a simple encoding nothing more. Treating it as some sort of encryption or barrier reflects poorly on your understanding of this matter.
People like you are the reason why people don't come forward when they stumble across security issues. You are the reason why our security is so poor. Instead of doing the right thing, we are forced to stand by and let local and foreign enemies exploit them instead.

As a software engineer, the governor has no idea how these sorts of disclosure work. The reporter behaved appropriately and the government's behavior here is wildly inappropriate.

you don't need a reason to conduct this "attack". you can do the whole thing by accidentally pressing a single fucking key

Oh but don't forget you have to notice that it's base64 (NOT encryption) and put it in a decoder to make it readable. The hacking, woah!

It's against the law to inspect the web pages element and noticing SSNs that shouldn't even be there?
This is equivalent to saying that me calling the police about a body in the trash while taking out my trash is me commiting murder.

  • @Eysvar
    @Eysvar 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

"It's much more than just a right click"
I can't even. Technically, inspect element is a right click and then a left click, and then maybe some base64 decoding, but this wasn't a Stuxnet level computer virus or Kevin Mitnick social engineering an employee. It's literally the state's servers willingly sending the data.
I get that not everyone is tech-literate, but come on. You've definitely been briefed on what is going on here and the double-down tactic is just making you seem worse.

“Hacked into the database” and “Why would anyone, be it the media or otherwise try to break in to a system”.. These are grossly inaccurate ways to describe looking at the html of a site. Anyone else fed up to their ears with these bad faith arguments?
