  • In this video, Martin Keary (AKA Tantacrul) outlines how the MuseScore open source community contributes to the success of MuseScore. There are a variety of different types of ways you can get involved and if you're interested, check out some of the links below.
    There were too many people to thank in this video and we will most likely release a second part in the coming months. Our community is frankly incredible and we'd love you to come and take part.

    I've used MuseScore since the first year of its initial release 9 years ago, and was completely unaware of everything discussed in this video. It's awesome to get a perspective of the monumental amount of community effort that goes into creating the app! Incredibly excited for the future of Musescore - and I'm super glad someone who is an expert not only in design, but in YouTubing is in charge of this channel! Looking forward very much to the future videos.

    • @OganySupreme
      @OganySupreme 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      C# is a little like Java, whereas C++ is lower level than Java. It can be coded at a lower level so it can compile faster. That's why most desktop applications may be made with C++.

    • @quintinpace2627
      @quintinpace2627 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      C++ is just C augmented twice
      So just think of it as Am in first inversion

    • @JoStro_
      @JoStro_ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Kanashimi Don't worry about it, what he said didn't make any sense anyway. Compile time has no impact on a software's suitibility for desktop aplications. (It would affect how likley a gentoo user is to use it though)

    can the dynamics updates be easily made to work with any sound font? or is that something that would have to be done on a per soundfont level?

    • @jumbo_t
      @jumbo_t 4 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      if the soundfont supports changing dynamics with CC1, 2, 4 or 11, then yes. Otherwise, it's not possible right now. Hopefully I'll be adding polyphonic aftertouch support soon, which will manage to support even more soundfonts for single-note dynamics. Hope that helps!

    • @riaanvn
      @riaanvn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The SoundFont has to support it. "the Soundfont used needs to be able to respond to [MIDI] CC2 (Control Change 2) messages-this is the case with MuseScore's native SoundFont, MuseScore_General_HQ" musescore.org/en/node/290616

    • @jumbo_t
      @jumbo_t 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that said, most soundfonts support CC11 to some extent so you should be able to use it with other soundfonts. Just add the soundfont, go to View > Synthesizer and go to the last tab. There you can choose the CC that is used for single note dynamics.

    • @jumbo_t

    I’ll definitely be moving over from Sibelius! Fantastic business model and community here! I compose a lot using microtones. Can anyone here tell me if musescore will have a good implementation of microtones, notating and playback?! Thanks!

    • @jt_jeetee
      @jt_jeetee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      "good" is a relative term ;-)
      If you go microtonal, I'd advise you to start off by customizing your accidentals panel to include the ones you will use. MuseScore natively understand the symbols as far as placement/positioning goes, but has no default playback effect for many of them (as depending on the followed system, the detuning of the symbol might differ).
      You can (de-)tune each note separately up to a cent accuraccy, but this would get very tedious. Luckily there are some plugins (see for example musescore.org/en/project/2231-edo-retuning-plugins-suite or musescore.org/en/project/accidental-tuner ) than you can run after entering the notes & symbols that automate the detuning process of the notes.

    I downloaded Musescore ages ago and was quite exited to get started but found i was struggling with it. I think an update or something prompted me to join the community so i could ask for advice, where i was berated for there being some problem with the score i had found, amongst other things, so i never went back. I'm a musician, not a techie. I haven't bothered using it since, i'll just make my own music by myself.

    • @Tantacrul

      That sucks. To be honest, since the community isn't run by a company, and since anyone can make a comment, you sometimes get unreasonable or childish people who act rudely towards those who have legit questions. But the the experienced contributors in the community - including those mentioned in this video - are cool. Feel free to @ me directly if you have an issue.

    Idk if I have the most recent version of Musescore, but one thing I dislike is that if I want quarter note triplets, first I have to put in a HALF note, THEN I have to use a shortcut??? There's no dedicated button as far as I can tell (again, if this has been fixed disregard this). I would like to be able to just put in a quarter note and click a "tuplet" button to make it a quarter note triplet.

    • @jt_jeetee
      @jt_jeetee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A tuplet toolbar button is in the works for MS4.
      The difficulty with starting with a quarter note duration and then pressing a triplet button, is that it very much limits the possible ratio's to use for that tuplet.

    • @jt_jeetee
      @jt_jeetee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can definitely use keyboard entry and not use the mouse for note entry at all. Have a look at musescore.org/en/handbook/note-input#basic-note-entry for how keyboard entry in the default step-time note input mode works.
      If you're really looking to use arrows instead of notenames then either first enter durations using rhtyhm mode and then go back and use re-pitch mode (musescore.org/en/handbook/note-input-modes for how to input notes in step-time ). Or make use of the 'R' keyboard shortcut to repeat the last entered chord.
