The dock shunter last appeared in the 1974 catalogue. So nearly fifty years old at its youngest. The model was a body on the transcontinental double ended diesel bogie. We a bit of TLC you can make a nice model.

Good job! Success! I have the same engine which was in very similar condition. I have had success too. The brushes are secured by a spring. It is a bit of a job, but they can be removed without soldering. New brushes are available and relatively inexpensive. My light was dead so I replaced it with an LED which works great. Really the most helpful thing I did was just to let it run for a while: 1/2 hour is both directions at about 50% power. Otherwise I did exactly what you did. Even the same kind of oil. Cheers and Happy and happy shunting.

I also noticed that the inside of the wheels where the contact touch the wheels is well worth the dremel cleaning.

Nice work, sir. I haven't seen a Docks Authority 0-4-0 running for years. Great watching you getting that one running. I hope it gives you a lot of fun. It was a common starter loco, much like todays 'pocket-rockets'! Did you know that there's two types of 3-1 now, after the WD40 company bought the 3-1 Company out? No one liked the 'new formula' so they had to make the 3-1 again to the old formula. Hah! Great stuff. Keep safe now. Cheers!

    Nice job mate well done.
Really looking fwd to seeing your Green Diesel (that's what I called mine) lol. Think it's a class29. Also had the Playcraft Dock shunter set. Gave all mine away dirt cheap, early days of Fleabay. Good luck with more bargains.
Now do that Diesel !!! 👍😎😎😀

Maybe the copper strip that contacts the backside of the wheels on the one side needs to be cleaned - and the back of the wheel as well? Canadian modeler SMT Mainline has a Tri-ang streamlined diesel that was made for the older track. SMT took the body off of the diesel, turned the mechanism upside-down, & connected a controller directly to the motor. SMT then ran the motor & used a file on the spinning wheels to reduce the flange so the locomotive could run smoothly on modern code 100 track.

Good job ... Have to say though that the pickups look wrong. I had the same engine an as this and the motor was used i many other configs, DMU etc, I'm sure mine had contacts on both side but then 55 years later I could be wrong!!

If you lways give the wheels and all contact surfaces and points it should run ok, they made these before planned obsolescence and could be repaired or serviced when required..

Hi Daniel, I gave a few of these and some run better than others. The wheels and the motor are the two big issues with a poor ratio and the wheels being too large. It gets expensive trying to upgrade these but they do look good. Great job.
Can we see a revues of your layout and what size is it? Cheers
