- Geoff got in touch with me asking if I could take a look at this old Dock Shunter. He told me he'd swapped the wheels for smooth ones but it wouldn't run afterwards.

I have a few of these and just like you say there is one of them which runs like a dream.
Hi Bill Thanks for the repair, sort of glad it was a common error that's been made before. Won't make that mistake again.
Goes like a train!
I played with one of these dock shunters so much as a boy I wore it out - now a non-runner waiting for motor repair
The one you have runs so well I would fix the light and the body
A blast from my past, I remember one of these in the layout in the Clyde model dockyard shop in the Argyll arcade in Glasgow 😂
Lovely smooth runner! Certainly better than my example which I had as a small boy in the early 1970s. Even from new it had a strange, juddery motion to it, like it was kangaroo powered. It lurched along in a strange pulsating way. At the time I was too young and shy to say anything to my dad but I'm sure he would have taken it back to the shop for a replacement, had he known at the time. I still have it today - maybe I'll have a look and see what's making it run like that. Unless you have any ideas...?
I have one of these, and it runs without a problem. The only problem is that it sounds like it is grinding the rails. It has the old serated wheels. When I start my layout. I will get some smooth wheels for it and give it a long wanted service. It has not had one since the 1970s.
A lovely quiet little runner not to mention sprightly when given the beans. I have made this error so many times. So easily done. Btw love the Freightliners running in the background. Thanks for sharing.
re body damage: There are a couple of ebay sellers who make 3D repair parts for these, in particular, sets of four steps, and front corner patch panels (below the buffer).
One of the sellers also produced a cab interior which was worth getting, but that doesn't seem to be available at the moment.
Cute little locomotive 😊 Bet lots of children had hours of fun with these as I did as I had a black one if I remember 👍🏻 Great fix 00Bill 👏🏻
Nice running dock shunter. I’ve go one of them and a R55 Trans Continental that I’ve owned since 1962. My grandfather bought them for when I was 4 years old. I have converted them to DCC a few years ago. Still running like new. Rgds from Down Under
Thanks for another great video
That’s a very sweet old runner. Mine was an absolute pig by comparison! Thanks Bill, always worth a watch.
Hi Greg.
If it was an absolute pig, then maybe you should have thrown it in the trough. 🤣
Paul.
Hi Bill.
A nice simple solution that has made life easier for you. WELL SPOTTED my Jacobite friend!
A fantastic runner for a 1960's loco. However, it's a pity Triang were not technologically advanced (in the mind) enough to realise that dock shunters had very low gearing as they were only designed to shunt small loads over short distances. I wonder if Geoff could replace the gearing with a lower ratio gearset to make her more realistically prototypical. I am now tempted to purchase one myself and experiment. If it all goes pear-shaped, I know where to come. 😄
Cheers,
Paul. 👍❤
My yellow version from 1962 runs like a champ! Thanks for sharing, Bill.
What a great little runner for an old model.
Layout is looking more impressive on each video 👍
I had this when I was a kid. It had a light which was just the ducks nuts
Great to see the old Triang shunter on the layout Bill, and the layout is really taking shape.👌
Great video Bill. Wow your layout is really coming along nicely too 😊
That's the blast from the past bill. I had one when I was growing up in the 60's . Mine had the headlight as well.
hi i also had one in the 60s, it was yellow, great little loco, dont know why the clowns at hornby dont bring it out again
Got to love these wee things. I have the black one and it runs well. I swapped out the bulb for an LED so that it lights up at low speed too. Also got a non-runner which I converted into a cabless loco so I can run a 'master-slave' shunter.
Thank you so much for this video Bill! I really would like to get one of these Tri-Ang Dock Shunters myself and would like to do this same smooth wheel conversion with it, so this really will save me from a headache in that eventuality!
I just got one at a show in the bargain bin, runs well too!
😂 a friend of mine had one of these, but in black and I remember the light was very bright. Also reminded in your video of how fast it was able to go 😮.
Layout coming on nice👍
Nice one . Was never a fan of the dockshunter . Never really looked like anything I’d seen . I later found out it was freelance Tri-ang loco that they made to utilise the electric bogie they had developed for their Bo Bo locos and dmu . It is in fact simply a bogie with a body on top ! Tri-ang certainly knew how to get money out of their assets . This one seems a lovely smooth runner
Hi Russell.
Actually, a dock shunter did exist. The black LMS 0-4-0 No.7050 is in preservation at the NRM @ York. She was constructed in 1934 and was handed over to the military 6yrs later. She was essentially built for experimental purposes by the 'Drewry Car Company' at 'English Electric, Preston' and was the only one in that class.
Yes, Triang did make a small financial 'killing' out of that production but, that was merely a sign of the times as most of Triang's locos and rolling stock were never a true reproduction of their so-called prototypes. However, things have progressed greatly since those days and goodness me, so have their blinkin' prices. 👎
Paul.
Hi Bill, I've got one too, it was given. It runs well considering it's age and after a service.
Reminds me of the matchbox speedkings shunter
I have 3 of these which I love. They run very fast, have the characteristic whining from the grooved wheels and are a great puller. I've changed the bulbs to led and re-magnatized . I would like to change the wheels to the newer smooth ones but there's a waiting time of 5 to 6 months.
Nice little locomotive. Great runner. I have made the same mistake on another model. Regards Paul.
hi Bill, great video,i always mark mine with a small bit of white paint, have one now, it runs great, we had them in the 60s in red, black and yellow, dont know why the clowns at hornby dont re release it instead of the rubbish thats out now
Fastest shutter in the west 😂, well done Bill
good vid thanks lee
What a nice runner for what is a triang motor bogie with a hat on. Model railways unlimited did a nice service video for the triang EMU which is the same thing.
Hi Bill ,, I have a dozen or so of these and it seems to me that the mankier they look the better they run. I picked up a vic rail double ender and in near mint condition until i put it on the track and was a terrible runner so pulled it down give it a good clean and a good sqooshin and hey presto it run but was and was thee noiseiest train i have so i swapped it out and used in it a black dock shunter which suits its purpose of being loud and obnoxious hahha.
Easy fix and have done the same myself only i sat mine on a aluminium tray and was wondering why it would run ,, it run quite easily on its side or in the foam cradlle but when i sat it upright it wouldnt go for the life of it ,, a total derrrr moment as i had it sitting on the ally tray (shakes my head) arhhh well ya live and learn hey. I love the buffers on this ,, do you think they are normal or add ons ?
Cheers from John in Australia.
Where can I get replacement wheels for triang locomotives so they can run on the newer track
Hi Bill As you say that example is so quiet I have 3 of those and that is far the most quiet example I have seen, make me wonder why? A question for you what size timber on your layout frames looks about 3 x 2, I will be building a new base soon and am following yours with interest. Thanks
2 x 2 legs and 2 x 1 for frames. Just due to cost and ease of working.
I have a couple of these Bill and pretty noisy they are. What kind of replacement wheels are they and where could one get them?
I have two. One from my childhood and one I bought on eBay. One has large wheels and the other has corrugated smaller wheels. I put the smaller wheels on the one I use to make it run slower and more realistic. I don't know why they were made with different size wheels.
Hi, where would I get a set of wheels from for this model as I have one that belonged to my uncle. It has the old ones.
I had one too in my youth. It wasn't ideal for shunting - slow running was not its strength.
These little dock shunters are ugly but I'm fascinated with them
