    How do I loop the sound? Whenever I leave the flag "Is NOT Looped" unchecked, it's not looped. And when I check it, it's still not looped.

    Is it possible to get the tf2 theme music in game without having to actually add it as a custom sound? For example, one would think that the song "Archimedes" would be in the list of sounds, but alas, it is not. Am I missing something?

    i know this has nothing to do with this vid but how do you get it where your cylinders only show the sides that you can see, like on the other side it's nodraw and when you go around it, it moves with you to where your always opposite to the nodraw, i have a map with several cylinders and i thought it'd help.

    Wait so what's the directory for custom sounds in Garry's mod?
    I would assume its
    C:\ProgramFiles(x86)\Steam\steamapps\USERNAME\garrysmod\garrysmod\sound
    But I've put it in there and it doesn't show up, even after refreshing it....

    This is the only tutorial from you i cant get to work..
    I put the sound file in the sound folder yet it doesn't show up in hammer. Its a .wav file. I restarted hammer and it jsut doesnt work.

    Yeh i'm making a disco thingy...how can i make it so that if a button i pressed to play the song....none of the others buttons can be pressed until that song has finished???so they cant have another song playing at the same time!

    Fantastic tutorial. Very easy to follow. Though I'm running into a few issues. I'm running Hammer with Portal 2 and I can load my sound in Hammer fine, but when I run the map, it refuses to play. I have my sound located in Common/Portal 2/portal2/sounds/radio_custom (since the game doesn't put folders in Steam user folders) and it's saved as a wave file at 44100 Hz 32-bit Stereo. Anyone know how to get this working?

      Same issue. Its just random... Probably source have a limit on channels.

    Hey nice tutorial! I've followed all your tutorials and they've helped a lot. But Im a bit confused about pakrat. Does it allow people to download the custom file straight from your computer or does it just come with the map once you upload to fpsbanana? I know I probably sound like an idiot but bear with me lol :P

    Thanks - your tutorials are very helpful as always. One thing I noticed that stumped me at first though - you cannot see mp3 files when searching for raw sounds in the Ambient_generic pop up - it must be a .wav file. You probably knew this, but based on the extra info below movie, some people might think you can use mp3s for Ambient_generic entities.

    Dudet's an internal problem. Did you set the sound file to loop? You need to correctly set its loop cue points in GoldWave for it to work, otherwise the StopSound input will fail. Some other flag settings etc will cause that aswell.

    ive putted a generator sound for a generator in the map
    and a truck sound coz i have a truck
    they are all looped and they work the first round

    @Tjoffe96 there should be an entity called target or trigger cdaudio and from there you can choose one of the hl2 tracks

    You need to set it to search Raw files
    If you don't, it won't work. There's a drop down in the sound browser.

    Please reply to this, I'm making a horror maze kinda map and I want to have creepy music in the background that goes on for about 6 minutes and Ive set it for all around the map and for some reason my whole map gets laggy and really weird! Please help me out man!

    plz help. my sound browser only shows like three sounds and they are ambient sounds or whatever and thats in the game sounds. in raw theres one sound and its like a soundscape and in scenes there is nothing. i have tried evrethying like refreshing it, redownloading souce sdk and hl2. also verrifing integrity of game cache and still no sounds in the browser. the weird part is when i play hl2, all the sounds are in the game, but in hammer there are no sounds in the browser. please help...thanks.

    When my custom sound (WAV) is supposed to be played in my left 4 dead 2 map, it says: ''S_StartSound: Failed to load sound 'custom sounds\gruntenabled01.wav', file probably missing from disk/repository'' even though I have placed the sound in the right folder. I made a folder inside the 'sounds' folder of L4D2, and called it ' custom sounds ' .
    Please help me out if you know what I've done wrong!

    If you have two or more buttons which you can hit to play different sounds/music, is there a way to make it so that hitting one immediately shuts the others off? I'm currently having a problem where I can get songs to play, but once one is playing I have to wait the full duration for it to finish before hitting another button, otherwise they play at the same time. I've tried setting up a second output to each button set to StopSound for the song I don't want playing, but it's not working.

    I'm trying to make a map for tf2 with a button that plays a song, but even after following your directions to the letter (At least to step 3, because it should work by then), the button refuses to work. The only main difference between your process and mine is that I didn't use Audacity, I just took an mp3 file from my music folder and copied it over into the proper folder I made as you instructed. Is that the reason as to why it isn't working?

    Is there a way to extract the sound with hammer? For instance, I've decompiled a map and am trying to get a specific sound file out of the map for use in other things. I've located the sound on the map, I see the file name, but I can't see of a way to extract it, and it's nowhere in my sounds folder. Is it even possible to do this?

    Or go to my computer, c drive, Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
    or hit run and paste C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
    A lot simpler than searching for shit
    Chances are that if steam is NOT in the default location, then the person knows where it's at. If not then we can assume that it would be in the default location.

    @3kliksphilip 3kliksphilip i wanna make a func_breakable with custom sounds (TNT explode from minecraft to be activated when someone shoots and breakes it) i can't see any option and even if there is with an output on an ambient generic how do i desable the sound from the normal explosion on env_explosion?

    Quick question, how do I make it so the song can be stopped? For example, I press the button once, and it begins to play. Then I press the same button again and it stops. The song would repeat once you press it again. I've tried everything but can't get it to stop, it just replays from the beginning.

    Nothing happens i download the LAME ENDECOR i extract it to the specified folder with WINRAR and i put it in the right folder you told me to put it in. I reload source SDK by exiting source SDK and clicking on hammer editor again. P.S I pick half life music25.mp3 or something like that and i click play and hear nothing i tried it for lots of them.

    i don't get the window that you add the custom textures on. it just jumps to what looks like a compile log. It's just this map, the others work. It says something about being a type 20 or something. I tired other pack programs and the popped an error talking about how it needs to be a version 19 or something. ideas?

    hey 3kliksphilip. i'm on the final stretch of my map here. I"m not doing sound, but custom textures. And judging by the other tut out there its the same proses, my problem is that when i open my map, that add window doesn't pop up. But more like a compile type window, with nothing to do or click on, ideas?

    Hey, uhm. Great tutorial! Allthough I have a problem. I resampled a song, to around a samplerate of 41000 wav. But when I compile my map, it says that the sound samplerate is invalid. I tried everything, and I really need custom sounds in what Im working on. :c

    I made a sound puted in right directory but there is a problem i dont have sound in hammer (there is no file in hammer).
    I play sound with Windows media player and then whole sound just runs out in few seconds :(
    sound long is 3:20 (its sond)

    Hey philip, Ive got this little problem. Im mapping for portal, and I need to know how to get the sounds into the... Well, game files obviously. But I cant find a sound folder for Portal, and I cant add files to it in GCFscape. So Im wondering, how will I fix this?

    For some reason, the "sound" folder is not in most of the files (i.e. "portal", "day of defeat", etc), and the one that it is in - hl2 - only has one sound file. Is this because I don't have most of the games necessary for this or because I have source engine 9?

    How do you make your custom sound loop? In the map im making i have a waterfall and custom sounds for that waterfall(which is one minute long)...
    On the flags tab,theres no option for looping sounds,but only "is NOT lopped" and if that is ticked nothing plays at all....

    Is something else needed to make a sample stop and play? I have two buttons, one that is set to play the sound and another to stop the sound, but the problem is, it won't stop, it plays through till the end. so in other words pressing another button to stop the sound doesn't work. thanks

    So what about ONE button that plays MULTIPLE sounds?
    Press it once for song1.wav,press it again to end it and start song2.wav instead type of thing?
    I can't figure that out...it just tries to play them both at the same time...which obviously results in a crash :P

    ive been tryin to create a map but whenever i create my own textures it looks rubbish cuz you can see the break or line where the texture like starts over again like on a chess board where it goes from black to white etc etc

    i fixed it :P i had to rename the sound file... it didnt even work ingame
    but the name was
    portal the device has been modified but had to be
    portal_the_devide_has_been_modified
    had to add underscores :P but thnks anyway for the tutorial. never would manage to do this XD

    HELP!! I've got a custom sound into the game, but the sound dosen't play and in the console it says "invalid sample rate (48000) for sound.." i've got the source SDK running on half life episode 2, and i've got the sound to activate by opening a nearby door, can any one help me please?

    my guess for this would be a math counter, when they press the button it adds one to the counter, when the counter gets to one, it plays a sound, when it gets to two (button pressed again) it plays a different sound... and so on

    I've been busy whole morning but I can't get it to work with texture's. Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to pakrat texture's? cause my friends still see the purple blocked thing when they play my map, but my texture really is in the map file.

    thanks so much!! but i have one question i've made a control board with lots of buttons for different songs, each one has a sprite that toggles on and off when the song is playing or not, i can get the songs to start and the sprite to come on fine, when i press the 'toggled' button again the sprite goes off as desired but the audio doesnt want to stop? is there an over ride thing i have to do or anything?

    @3kliksphilip First i just cutted the sound to 36 secs and keeped quality high (44000khz) but the file size was like 18mb and it didnt played on sdk menu (when i previewed it on ambient_generic, you know) then i got it to the lowest possible quality (8800khz phone quality) and it played on preview, then i ran the map to test but it played like chipmunk (ultra fast) as i said...i have tried radio quality (22000khz) but it has the same problem. (goes too fast)

    Hey philip my custom sound (it is one rap song) is working inda map well and in sdk and others can hear it BUT it plays so friggin fast expect that i have cutted it to length of 0:36 and i have maked the quality so low that it takes like 800kt (8800khz) but as i said the song goes so fast that it sounds like chipmunks and it plays in like 10secs the whole song.. :(
    (i have done other custom sounds and all have the same problem)

    Create an entity called logic_auto, add an output called OnMapSpawn, then add your playSound or whatever you want. Each time the map(or a new round start), it will be triggered.

    Does that happen when you remove your own sound files too? I've tried doing this for L4D2, normal sounds where there, but the (custom) music I had not. Maybe try rebuilding the sound cache. Search it via google, it might help.

    @3kliksphilip Forget it i got my map finished i just need to add the textures and all that and make a wall around it to block ppl to go to the skybox. It's a payload map. It looks nice. I'll try to upload to gamebanana today

    I made a StopSound button but it does not work.
    I have this as my outputs:
    OnDamage
    Ambientname
    StopSound
    I diden't do any thing else.
    What should i do more? Or what did i do wrong?

    How do i make a button that stops the sound(s). I have these as Outputs:
    OnDamaged
    (Ambient Name)
    StopSound.
    and i haven't done any thing else with that button
    (i have a button that starts the sound and it work...)

    All that I have seen are either outdated or the person talking does not know how to do a tutorial as simple and as clearly as you do.

    Hey, if you're using Left 4 Dead SDK, you put the sound in "Program Files (x86), Steam, steamapps, common, left 4 dead, left4dead, sound, (whatever catagory folder, eg: music)" then create a folder and put your sound in there!

    Well I have mine working to a certain degree I encountered a problem with the radius in which the sound plays within it seems to only play within inches of the actual abient-generic... The radius is set to 4600 I am still confused after searching every where to hunt down the culprit of this Error... And help is welcome

    @3kliksphilip Hey. Thanks for your quick reply. The smaller file did work, however I am wanting to get a fairly long song to play in my map. I tried compressing the file size, but when I converted it to wav format it became huge again. Do you know of a way to decrease the size of a wav file, or if there is another format that would work?

When i add song to the level it says that the song has be added, but when my friend tried to play the song on hes css, he couldn't hear it + the map took from 5mb(without a song) to 39mb(with song) the song takes only 3mb so why is this, maybe you could help me out?

    @3kliksphilip It plays, loops twice (could just be the version of the song), but then it goes silent. I went to my map's admin room with the toggle key toggled it off, then on and it was playing again, but it still won't loop. I did a Google search about some program that use use to tell the file to loop and apparently adding _loop after the song is theory.

    I was hoping you'd specify what settings the sound has to be. I have a looping train sound and I've not had problems with sounds in the past however it plays fine, loops but after dying and the next round loads, there's silence. I tried putting a trigger_multiple on spawn area, using a logic_auto but nothing :S Going to test format again.

    If you're having trouble that the music won't work after you pressed the button you can replace the ''OnPressed'' With ''OnDamaged'' (Make sure you damage the button then)
    This worked for me ;)

    I'm a developer for a game on steam, no custom sounds or models WILL NOT Vac ban you, only custom client.dll files and things that inject their own dlls into the game while the game is running.

    Could adding a custom sound to my TF folder get me banned? I've heard you're not supposed to play around / Dig the TF folders. Don't wanna get Vac-banned again. I'd love an answer from someone who knows.

    @3kiksphilip some ppl been asking how you can make it so you can turn the music on and off with the same button well in ambient_generic go to flags and just untick is NOT looped and it will work

    @3kiksphillip im mapping for css and i put it in the sound folder in cstrike and ive tried restarting hammer but doesnt help could it be cos am using actuall songs not recordings but i made them wav

    When browsing for your sounds, select RAW instead of Game Sounds if you can't find your sound sample. Be sure to load up the Source SDK *AFTER* placing the sound in the folder.

    for some reason the pakrat didnt work for me
    i still get the failed to load sound "filename" probably blah blah blah. so other people get that in their consols when the custom sound in my map plays

    I hawe a question; I can play my custom sounds/songs whit a button, but when i want to play other song i can hear two songs at same time. Can you help me whit this trouble? Sorry for my bad english

    hey. the sound doesnt wanna go into the bsp. i press on add and i sellect the sound file but when i press ok and it askes about that fix thing. i press yes but its not in it :S is there a fix ?

    Yes indeed.
    However, my sounds still don't work ingame, and I can't test my map via hammer, only through the game. (Tf2.)
    I have updated my sounds in a .wav format with the 44100 sample rate, but now my sounds just don't show up in the sound list. I'm using a custom capture sound btw.

    USE mp3. The size is 4 times smaller than wav files. But you can't preview these files in the editor. Well, I'm having a problem with having files play automatically when I'm ingame. They just don't play. They are ambient sounds that are not started silent, they loop, and are not played everywhere.

    Is it possible to make like Half life 2 Songs? Like, Combines arrive and a Song Starts playing, How can you make it play so It doesn't fade out the volume when you leave the Volume Area (The Radius of the Volume) Is the the "Play Everywhere" Flag?

    I FIGURED IT OUT-
    For portal, you need the sound folder to be named "sound" not "sounds"
    3 days to figure that out...
    3 DAYS!!!
    Making a map called arena-pretty much everything is stuff I learned from you videos-- custom textures, sound, all that jazz. Just sayin thanks
