    47 shalt be the number of ways thou shalt kill, and the number of those killed shall be 47. 48 shalt thou not kill, nor either kill thou 46, excepting that thou then proceed to 47. 48 is right out.

      The entire hitman series is full to the brim with throwbacks and rehashes of previous missions. Usually they put a new spin on it (i.e. killer virus).

      Yep, and Sapienza itself could be considered a re-imagining of A Vintage Year - you have a Villa, a secret lab in the basement, a ski-plane in the cavern, and i'm sure there are more similarities than that.
      Sometimes a good idea gets brought back up because they can do more with it as their game engine is improved.

      I did that way back when I played the first Hitman, specifically the mission in the Chinese restaurant. I couldn't find a way to do it silently, so I strangled and killed my way towards the target - then the ranking screen told me I made too much of a mess and failed the mission. And it took me a long time to do that too. Quite a different stealth game to what I was used to at the time.

    Getting rid of throwables and containers would just limit options, and one of the best things about hitman is the choice of how to pull off the hint, that said, if you toss a body in the dumpster people should occasionally throw trash in there and see the body. And if people hear a bottle brake, they shouldn't head directly to it they should instead cautiously look around them checking their back as they move to invest.
    And for something I want in all stealth games, any trained guards would report to each other via radio and would notice if another guard wasn't there when patrols meet up, so after a bit of time after a kill or knock out the whole premises should be on alert and guards should investigate where the missing guard should be.
    And if the guards are supposed to be carrying shotguns and your caught carrying a sniper that should also cause issues.
    I also feel depending on where you are, and how many innocents you killed in previous levels, some civilians should be secretly armed.

      Yea this is the game that made me love the series back in the day but uh, not being able to run and guards being super sensitive sucked. Contracts worked a lot better in most ways. Also, opportunities being an exclamation point on the map is just as much of a sign post as them being part of the HUD (not that its a bad thing to give the player some direction anyways)

      @silverfoxeater the older hitman games are a janky fucking mess that are more frequently just really fucking frustrating to play. Yeah, they were harder, that doesn’t make them better. Modern Hitman is smoother to play, prettier, more polished, and has more varied toolsets than any previous one. Don’t like mission stories or intel? Turn them off and play on master difficulty instead of being a cringe gatekeeper

    ... Alright Jon, you've convinced me that the new game should be named something not Hitman 2. Mostly cause I saw the title and thought "Wow, is that game- *sees the Silent Assassin subtitle* Oh, it's the old one. That makes more sense"

  • @hyperaije
    @hyperaije 6 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    So Jon keeps talking about how he wishes the new Hitman games could be just as difficult and finicky as this one, but I have to disagree. Having the new ones be as difficult as Silent Assassin would turn off a lot of new people to the series. I could understand having it operate under these rules as an extra challenge mode, but the default/easier options should probably stay close to how they are now.

    Silent Assassin wasn't NEARLY as hardcore as Codename 47. You couldn't save during missions at all, no matter what the difficulty. And some of the missions were LONG, heck, some of them were so long they had to be broken up. You only had one target in Colombia, but you had to go through two (small) levels just to find the target's drug compound. And let's not forget the last level, where you're suddenly thrown up against an army of 47s. Codename 47 was so hardcore they remade half of the levels in Hitman: Contracts just so people could actually finish them.

    • @EazyMichael
      @EazyMichael 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brian Fowler i thought those missions in Contracts were just a throwback.

    • @xmus4023
      @xmus4023 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not only that, but most of the later levels after the Hong Kong section are almost impossible to complete completely silently. Be it guard awareness or placement, there is just no way.
      I am just happy I was able to FINISH Codename 47. Made me appreciate the newer games more.

    • @BauthorFowler
      @BauthorFowler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Well, Codename 47 was never really about being a perfect assassin. It was intended to be an action game, like Absolution. Silent Assassin was the first in the series to actually let you try to be a silent assassin.

    • @xmus4023
      @xmus4023 6 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @SimoExMachina2
    @SimoExMachina2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hitman: Codename 47 and Hitman 2: Silent Assassin are the only games in this franchise I have played and beaten multiple times. While the first one is an absolute classis and really revolutionized stealth games, by introducing a cold blooded assassin as the protagonist, the second one made huge improvements in just about every aspect: gameplay, plot, combat, stealth, athmosphere, level design and so on. My only gribe was the limited saves, since many levels featured some really difficult parts and failure and total disaster was often one small mistake away - someone seeing you making a kill, someone finding a corpse, a bad timing etc. Also the way you could collect weapons into your "shack" and then take what ever you wanted when entering a level meant you could choose which evens weapons best suited your intended playstyle - SMGs and Assault Rifles for aggressive, silenced pistols and fiber wires for stealthy etc.

    Believe it or not, there IS a way to get a perfect Silent Assassin on this level. Jon was in the perfect position when the guard takes a piss. You don't strangle him or use the anaesthetic, you simply creep up to the door, open it and walk inside. If you walk slowly but purposefully towards the stairs on the outside of the house that lead to the cellar, you don't arouse suspicion. Then you go to the kitchen and wait for the right moment, using the map, to creep past the cook and walk up the stairs. There is then a room which has a door leading to a very narrow ledge on the outside of the house. You can creep around this ledge to a roof which then leads to the balcony of the Boss's office. Using the map to make sure you are not in the line of sight of any of the guards by the swimming pool (takes ages) you can creep around the balcony, open the door to the office and strangle the boss. The boss has the key to the room in the cellar on him. You then creep around the ledge back to the cellar, drop down, open the door to discover the priest is not there, then creep out and walk out the way you came. Silent Assassin. BOOM!
    PS. I had a demo disk of this game I got with an XBox magazine which only had this level on it, so I played it again and again while I saved up for the actual game. There are many ways to complete this level and that is what make this the best Hitman game IMHO. It was up to the player to work it out and solve problems; it wasn't signposted like in the later games. I loved this game!

    One of the cool things in Hitman 2 was that stationary guards would turn and face the other way if they heard footsteps. So if you had a guard that you had to sneak past but he was facing you, if you went into another room next to him and ran around a little, the guard would face in that direction, then you woul SNEAK back out the room and when you got back to where the guard was, he would now be facing away from you in the direction of where the footsteps were, allowing you to sneak past unseen.

  • @SimoExMachina2

    In St. Pete levels, the soldier uniforms are compatible with the Dragunov sniper rifle, so if you first get one (uniform), you can then walk freely holding the rifle. It is possible to sneak the rifle without the civs seeing it, sneak past the guard, and from another location, get a free uniform to go with the rifle. In general (no pun intended), disguises in this game have a number of weapons, which are "compatible" - i.e. they do not cause in suspicion on others, such as AK for a Russian soldier or 9mm for a mafioso. If you are carrying atypical weapon for the disguise, it will very quickly blow your cover, which makes, since, for intance, a someone dressed as a doctor should not walk around with a sniper rifle.

    I agree that I liked how you couldn't knock everyone out in the old games. One thing I don't like about in the latest games is how you can just throw objects to lure guards one by one and knock them all out. It makes so many of the cool gadgets unnecessary. However, having to rush a mission because they wake up is no fun either. A good compromise might be for the non-lethal options knock people out for the level, but those had very limited uses.
    Not being able to run though, I'm glad they got rid of.

    In the original version, I found an incredibly easy way to SA level 3. Place the car bomb under the car parked over the sewer. Run back to the surface then walk to the wall just north of the pier. Back touching the wall, snipe the other general and just walk away. The two guards will never see you, and the other general just goes and gets blown up. It worked 100% of the time for me.

    I have fond memories of this game. It was one of the first games I had ever played. The difficulty, along with the satisfying violence, all topped off with Jesper Kyd's amazing music work makes this one of the best entries into the series. Perhaps it hasn't aged all that well in some respects, and a few missions are either filler or linear in their solution, but those are really the only faults it has.

    In my mind, Blood Money had the best compromise in regards to knockouts: Limited use with the syringe and risky to pull off with guns, but when you did it, the unconsciousness was a permanent state. I liked that the most, where as in 2 + Contracts I never wanted to use knockouts, since you can get SA with one non-target kill, and in Absolution onwards, it's too easy.

    Anathema: Kill the Don in his bedroom, nobody else goes there, hide the body on other side of his bed if you get paranoid, though not necessary. Postman disguise could work for that with it being close front door, delivery guy is better because you can hide guns in the grocery box, but requires more patience since you're on the other side of the house. Glitchless suit-only is an option, but you have to very patient, enter when guard goes to urinate and sneak through basement entrance. Guard in front of the bedroom can be gotten past while he stands there (sneak past behind him so he doesn't see you), or you can wait until he moves into a more favorable position. Sniper rifle by the car is an option for SA as well, but you have to be careful where his body falls while he's driving golf balls off the balcony, there are a couple blind spots nobody will find him but they are very specific (having him fall off IS NOT one of them, unless you wait for the Postman to leave beforehand). Also, take your shot outside of the compound near where you start the level and drop your weapon after you fire, else guards might swarm you for sniping.
    Saint Petersburg: The way you showed is the easiest way to get SA. A bit trickier is getting inside the meeting building, which is best for a glitchless suit-only, but guard timing for a SOSA is nightmare, you need patience like no other.
    Kirov Park: Easiest SA is sneak, get sniper rifle, go back across the street in front of the eastern entrance to the park- view of guards is minimal at the start, so don't cross the street and they won't see bald guy with rifle. Line up shot, wait for both targets to hug at start of meeting, pop both with one shot, drop rifle, run straight for boat before guards show up- you're close enough to hop on before too many warnings fire off. Easiest SOSA in the game.

    Maybe it could be implemented with a difficulty setting. Like, the highest difficulty removes all containers from the map.
    Now, the Agency sniper rifle without a case is just stupid. It almost like they want you to be spotted and shot.

    • @blarg2429
      @blarg2429 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That'd be a neat plot twist, having the Agency out to get you. Of course, they already did that once (in Blood Money, I think? Or was it Absolution? I've never played a Hitman game myself...), but if they hadn't.

    • @JayPKay

      Oh, using flaws in the game to do things that weren't intended to be possible can make it easier? Who'd have ever guessed? Thanks for the info, Captain Obvious.
      Not that I disapprove of such exploits, but using glitches _is_ just cheating, and it seems pretty self-evident that games tend to get easier if you cheat at them.

  • @CeliriaRose

    I do agree that I wish the newer games kept some stuff but other things I’m glad are different.
    For example I fully agree that knocked out shouldn’t be mechanically identical to dead. Too many games do this and it feels cheap that stealthy takedowns are pretty much lethal takedowns just with a different name and animation.
    On the other hand I like not having to walk everywhere. Sure it’s not necessarily realistic and it would be nice if there was a bit more suspicion when your character behaves in a manner thats inherently out of place but to me itfalls under the category of fun over realism. Maybe they could find a nice middle ground.
    I also like hiding spots where you can tuck bodies away. Maybe they could not have them fool proof with aspects like as mentioned before the unconscious person waking up or maybe guards will search nearby boxes/closets if alerted in location but it’s nice having more options to play with when trying to hide bodies from view than just dragging them into a corner. Plus honestly it’s a bit more realistic than what happens here where people just memorize the level and drag the body into the spot the AI doesn’t happen to cover.
    I do also agree though on the hints. I like being able to get clues and hints by listening in on conversations but they could be a little more subtle about it at times. It would be cool if it wasn’t entirely clear and there was more need for the player to piece things together instead of having it borderline spelled out for them.
    Basically for me it comes down to I appreciate more options/tools to utilize and playability over realism but I wouldn’t mind more nuance and depth alongside it to make the player really need to think and plan. I don’t necessarily need it to be super difficult with guards being on a hair trigger and constant game overs because your character took a breath in a way a guard didn’t like but there should be a nice middle ground between the modern games and the older ones.

    Oooffff.... you make some serious good points there. I had forgotten H2, but you reminded me of how much I enjoyed it. Very immersive indeed. Slow, hardcore. The suspicion meter and the walking. The weapon collection system. The modern pacifying system cheapened hitman. The excessive hints. The importance of the map. I wish they reintroduced some of those features in future editions. Why dont they resuscitate some of these maps too? Anyway, thanks.
