I use cuttlefish bones for our African Giant Land Snail. It's an easy source of calcium for them to help build a strong shell. Sadly the ones on the beach are too saturated with bad things so I have to buy them. I went out after Storm Anthoni back at the start of August and there were loads of different shark/ray egg cases, By the Wind Sailors and even a Portuguese Man O'War. I think with the storms you need to find a beach that really faces into the wind or the good stuff just blows right past and can strip other beaches clean too.
What sort of bad things are on the cuttlefish bones that you can scavenge? Is it mainly pollutants? I agree, I live in Essex now and the bulk of the storms come in off the Atlantic side of the country so I often miss the best fossil hunting and beach-combing! I noticed several boats sitting on the sand. Is that due to the storm or just the way it goes at low tide?
Thats just how it goes at low tide for the most part! Usually people who want to use them get on and wait for the tide then head out.
