One of the ladies that work for Rick Steves said that the “travel” clothes are mostly polyester and do not breathe. She suggests and takes in her luggage all linen and silk clothing. Yes they wrinkle but they’re more comfortable. Since I’m older and don’t wear leggings, I wear a lot of linen pants in the summer. We just came back from Paris and a river cruise on the Seine and my hubby and I went for 11 days in a carryon and backpack each. Our color palette were black, white and blue with a splash of color with my scarves. Loved that we blended and didn’t look like a tourist. The ice cream gal thought I was local and spoke to me in French after I greeted her with Bonjour. I purged most of my polyester clothes in my closet, so brought cashmere, cotton, linen and silk on our second trip to Europe last spring.
I have watched a lot of the Sarah Murdoch packing videos. I think she is brilliant with the way she weighs everything. I am actually making some linen long pants in black and ecru for a trip to Sicily in October. However, I also ordered the black travel pants from Talbot’s. I wear the Travelers from Chico’s on the plane as they are too heavy to pack.
I agree; the trade off of less wrinkles with polyester is not worth it. Polyester traps sweat and odor, which is not good. I have a trip planned for the south of France early this summer, and found a dual voltage travel steamer on Amazon. I am bringing mostly breathable, natural fibers like cotton, linen and silk, and will just steam the wrinkles out. 😊 And I had a similar experience, Orthodiva, when I was flying to Paris a couple of years ago; I noticed a woman looking at the line I was in at the check in counter, and she finally decided to pick me as the person most likely to be French to ask a question of. I took that as a compliment.
They have developed a lot of new fabrics and blends that are breathable dry fast and don’t wrinkle as easily as silk and linen. She isn’t talking about 1970s polyester.
I agree that cottons and linens can be comfortable, however, as she’s says, the fabrics she’s referring to a designed specifically to keep you comfortable and unlike cotton and linen which hold moisture, these fabrics wick it away. I pack both types as most of my travel involves a variety of activities. 😊
Very enjoyable and well presented. Last year we went on a 20 day Mediterranean cruise and only took 1 carry-on and 1 backpack each. I put the toiletries and shoes (only took 2 pair so wore one and the other packed) in the backpack to save as much room for the carry-on as possible. As you mentioned, establishing a colour capsule is a must to be able to mix and match the clothes you can squeeze into them! Your suggestion to take clothes that are of synthetic material and even more stretchy is spot on for comfort as well as ease of care - who wants to deal with wrinkled clothing on a holiday?? Being that we were sightseeing every day and eating in the dining room at night, it meant splitting our clothing into dressy and casual. Yes that was quite a challenge, but once you have your main pieces of neutrals, it was easy to put the "accent" pieces together. Your video will be so helpful for others planning a holiday - great tips and ideas!
Thank you Kay. Great ideas here. When we do a longer trip I always lay out on my bed what I want to take. I do this some weeks before the travel date. I try to work on 12 tops, 5 bottoms and 3 pairs of shoes that mostly all go together. I can then identify any missing pieces I might need to purchase. Then I take a photo of everything laid out to have as reference when actually packing.
I just bought a pair of beige sport fabric trousers that look identical to those Athleta ones you showed. I'm looking forward to taking them on my next trip; I think they'll be really versatile as long as they stay clean...I usually take pants that are black or grey for practicality. My beige pants were from Walmart, but I did check out Athleta website and just ordered a deep blue pair like your beige ones. I generally travel 6-8 weeks each time and typically take 10 tops and 5 bottoms (so 50 combinations at least). One top is a black cardigan that can be worn buttoned up as a top (with a scarf), or over virtually all the other tops to change up their look. The black maxi skirt I always take can be pulled up to my armpits and worn as a strapless dress. Then if I put a top over the strapless dress it looks like a midcalf skirt, to make many more combinations. FYI I didn't see you do it but that buttonfront beige shirt dress could be worn open over a black top+bottom as a long duster type over layer. Two of the tops I take are sleeveless blouses with collars, but both get worn open over tank tops to create more combinations. I also take at least 5 silky scarves in a range of colours to change up the look of my tops - all my tops are plain. I never take pattered tops on trips - if you are eating dinner with the same people every day, they really only see the top and a plain one is far less memorable so you can rewear it again sooner without it being obvious. Also, a couple of the scarves I take are very large so they can be wrapped/tied to create a top (there are lots of videos on Pinterest etc showing you how to do it). I also take travel fabric pants for the most part, but most of my tops are Icebreaker brand merino wool. The 100% wool ones don't breed bacteria so you can usually get two days out of them before they need a wash in the sink. I only buy the completely plain ones so they don't look like hiking gear and can be dressed up with a scarf for dinner. When I buy sporty pants I avoid, zippers, side pockets, logos etc. Anything that gives away that it's sports wear. I have plain black, grey, beige, and now the blue on order. Five of the 10 tops I take are black so they go with everything. In addition to everything going with everything, I also insist that everything can be washed in a sink and hung to dry. If I have access to a washer and dryer great, but I don't want to depend on that.
Good idea! You could also bring just a couple pair of earrings, and then you'd be "forced" to buy some on your adventure. I always buy a pair or two and they make a lovely souvenir of your trip.
I love packing videos, and yours was great, Kay! The beige items looked beautiful with your hair color and complexion. You touched on one of the most important travel wardrobe tips. That is to try on EVERY SINGLE ITEM before you pack it. Bonus points if you wear the item for a day or two and wash it to ensure it performs as you wish. Another tip is to wear each pair of shoes you're taking for at least a few days to ensure they won't hurt or pinch in any way. Lastly, for a hiking trip, wear in your hiking boots or trail runners for at least 50 miles to ensure they fit perfectly well. Then set them aside and you're all ready for your trip and they'll have at least 450 miles of tread and support left. An oblong scarf is a terrific addition to vary your looks. Great video!

Kay. This was another good blog g. Last winter, after you discussed them, I purchased the Talbots Travel Pant and I love them. What a nice addition to my wardrobe. I have been using packing cases for my trips. I have even spent a month in England and Scotland with a carry on by using these cubes. I also have several Eileen Fisher sets. I love them for travel. They are real work horses! I take one nice outfit, which more and more comes in handy.

I am going to San Francisco at some point this year, London and Paris in the spring, and Charlottesville VA. The packing cases are super space savings. In the cities women look so well put together. So I will take better pieces, but travel smart.

Well done! Love how you accented your neutrals with pastel pink and blue. I’m aware I need to get the wallet that prevents someone from scanning your credit card from your purse - RFID, I think. I purchased a cashmere oversize wrap from Macy’s (watch for one of their many sales) for use on plane because I’m always cold there but happily found it’s large enough to use instead of a throw when I’m at home reading or watching TV.
I’m too messy when I eat. I wear white at home, when I can change. But I’m not sure I would pack a white shirt for me. I don’t know how, but I usually get something on my shirt. This was a great video. I haven’t traveled lately. But I would like to someday in the future.
Great video Kay. I have recently discovered packing cubes for the suitcase…what a joy. I used them on my last trip, each group…pants, shirts, sweater/wraps…had their own cube, a timesaver and clothes were not wrinkled.

Also, with a top of sorts over it makes it look like a skirt...versatility! Also, agreed about a wrap scarf...I frequently incorporate one of those in everyday outfits! (A Pashmina or Turkish towel are my favorite alternatives.) Skechers and Clarks make some great travel-friendly (lightweight for packing, too!) and comfortable shoes to dress up or down outfits! I am a sucker for my Crocs, though...supportive and easy off/on for TSA plus double as slippers and shower/pool shoes (of course, the non fleecy lined ones). 😊 P.S. Wow, you're a Pastor's Wife?!? One of the most supportive, gracious people behind the scenes... My Dad is a retired Pastor, and my Mom was such a huge support for him in many ways. Thank you!
I love mix and matching with a color palette when I travel. It makes it much easier to go with just carryon luggage. You showed 8 different pairs of shoes with these outfits. I would definitely narrow it down to 3 as your list states.

I’m going to Europe on the 4th, I know I’m over packed I have a pair of Sneakers I’m wearing to travel, 3 pair of sandals and one pair of dressy heeled sandals. I’ll be away for a month 15 days on a European river cruise and two weeks in England. I have three dresses 2 pair of dressy pants, 3 pair of jeans one wide leg linen pant and 1 pair of white jeans and a pair of yellow jeans. We are going to the symphony in Austria so I have dressy pants and a Lilly silk blouse or my dressy dress. I have a couple of long sleeve tees, and a cardigan a linen jacket and a denim jacket. I have about 15 tops which are blouses and tees 3 sets of sleepwear. I’m taking a medium Away expandable and the larger Away expandable carryon. I have a couple of clutch bags and two small cross body bags. And a Kiplinger bag as my one personal bag. I probably won’t wear some of it but we are going for a month.
Really good ideas. When you mentioned fabrics that was a learning moment for me. I will leave my linens at home. Just spent a month in Europe with carry on only. No problem packing. I put my shoes in the outside compartments and use cloth packing bags. The flat clutch is also a great idea. Thanks. You look very pretty with the blue colours.
Rather than a dressy clutch I purposely bought a black "patent leather" look makeup bag. It holds my make up until I need to get fancy for dinner and then I dump it out and use it for the evening and afterwards reload my makeup. No need for an extra purse for those formal nights on the ship when I'm already taking that tiny makeup bag. I travel carryon only so everything must do multiple jobs. Just back from a three month trip (London+49 day cruise to Australia+1 month in Aus/NZ) with just a carryon and a shoulder bag.

Great tips! We traveled in the Spring and the temperatures were unpredictable. I took warm undergarments from Cuddle Duds. They are light weight and don’t take up much room in the suitcase. I had 3 different weights of travel pants but none were really warm. When it was cold, I wore the Cuddle Duds under my travel pants from Athleta. I have found that when I buy quality travel items I use them for years to come. We enjoyed the opera. ❤️😉🎶

I like having a linen scarf for summer because it can lightly shade parts of my body, like shoulders, that I don’t want more sun on, without making me hotter. I got mine from H&M, it’s not at all soft, but was cheap.
Under garments weren't covered in this video but I can highly recommend On Gossamer travel underwear. They can be washed in the sink and take an hour to dry (or 1 minute with a blowdryer). They are lined where they need to be, but the main fabric is tissue thin and even the elastic is sort of perforated so it dries faster. I take three pairs on every trip, but if I was willing to wash them everyday I could cut that down to one. I don't know how durable they are so I never wear them at home - I save them for travel. I just watched a video on another channel by a woman doing a very long trip and her packing list included 21 underwear! Guess she only wanted to do laundry every 3 weeks? Clearly she wasn't travelling with carryon only. I don't even own 21 pairs of underwear.

When I first heard this, I didn’t believe it, but it’s actually true. If you ROLL your clothes - shirts, pants, dresses,etc. - you can fit way more into your suitcase😄
‘Europe’ is a big place and includes half of Turkey so I will just talk about northern Europe. The best tip I can give is to pack layers. With climate change we get really extreme weather conditions now; sometimes it feels like 4 seasons in a week. T-shirts, cotton or light knit (eg cashmere) jumpers, lightweight and heavy weight trousers, shorts or skirts and dresses for really hot days. A raincoat is essential. If you are sight-seeing please be respectful of other people’s cultures. Please take a light jacket or shawl into a church if you are sleeveless and/or in shorts and remind the men in your lives to remove their hats (one of my pet peeves). I would suggest packing a refillable water bottle. Buying lots of bottled water gets expensive and is not great for the planet. If you are looking for comfortable/stylish/sturdy trainers if pounding the streets you can’t go wrong with Calla. They are expensive but really worth every penny. Happy travels x
Thanks Kay for another great video. I like your travel capsule although I would prefer a little more colour. My husband and I will be in Europe in August and September. We are very casual travellers and I usually have a similar wardrobe to the one you suggest although I try to stick to 3 pairs of shoes. I travel carryon but need to keep my bag to no more than 7 kg (max limit for carryon to in and out of Australia) which is extremely challenging. I would have liked a bit more emphasis on fabric choice (cotton and linens for summer or wool and cashmere in winter). I always take linen pants in the summer. Yes they always crush but they still look fabulous. I would love to see follow up videos on travel toiletries, a winter capsule or ski holiday capsule.
Great video as always, but I cringed at the opening when I saw the shoes in your suitcase. Shoe soles are dirty….my shoes always go in bags, either actual shoe bags, or most often just in plastic bags saved from the grocery store so they don’t get on my clean clothes.
Hahaha! I usually put mine in bags, too. Actually I always do. I was just packing that for the video and was thinking more about you being able to see how much I got in there. If you’d just seen a bunch of bags you wouldn’t have known what was in there. 😉

Thank you for this, it looks like it took a lot of work. I keep a packing list in my phone and when we were traveling, before covid, I would edit the list as I was traveling. Mostly deleting items that I didn't need. Too many long pants, too many dressy tops, too many bathing suits, and too many socks. I am glad to still have that list for our trip in September.
I have a 40-year old pair of Rockport low-wedge sandals that are bliss to wear. I’ve had them repaired and refurbished so many times that I’ve decided to hoard them for future summer traveling rather than finish them off with more everyday wear. I’ve never yet found such a comfortable shoe, and they never look out of style. Similarly, I’m hoarding some light-colored, cool, viscose knit dresses for travel. I can’t wear those polyester “travel” clothes, the breathability and wicking claims are just advertising nonsense, these fabrics are just plastic.
No way. Polyester stinks. Literally. It’s also just plastic, so makes me really sweaty and irritates my skin. It’s okay for a windbreaker, but never touching my skin.

Laying everything out well in advance works well for me too. I often find I can remove a few pieces when I see it in bulk.

I am going to San Francisco at some point this year, London and Paris in the spring, and Charlottesville VA. The packing cases are super space savings. In the cities women look so well put together. So I will take better pieces, but travel smart.

Well done! Love how you accented your neutrals with pastel pink and blue. I’m aware I need to get the wallet that prevents someone from scanning your credit card from your purse - RFID, I think. I purchased a cashmere oversize wrap from Macy’s (watch for one of their many sales) for use on plane because I’m always cold there but happily found it’s large enough to use instead of a throw when I’m at home reading or watching TV.

I’m too messy when I eat. I wear white at home, when I can change. But I’m not sure I would pack a white shirt for me. I don’t know how, but I usually get something on my shirt. This was a great video. I haven’t traveled lately. But I would like to someday in the future.

Great video Kay. I have recently discovered packing cubes for the suitcase…what a joy. I used them on my last trip, each group…pants, shirts, sweater/wraps…had their own cube, a timesaver and clothes were not wrinkled.

This was really good and helpful. What would also be helpful is if you could show us the toiletries and makeup you take on holiday and how you pack them. I find that they take up more room than clothing and weigh a ton.

Also, with a top of sorts over it makes it look like a skirt...versatility! Also, agreed about a wrap scarf...I frequently incorporate one of those in everyday outfits! (A Pashmina or Turkish towel are my favorite alternatives.) Skechers and Clarks make some great travel-friendly (lightweight for packing, too!) and comfortable shoes to dress up or down outfits! I am a sucker for my Crocs, though...supportive and easy off/on for TSA plus double as slippers and shower/pool shoes (of course, the non fleecy lined ones). 😊 P.S. Wow, you're a Pastor's Wife?!? One of the most supportive, gracious people behind the scenes... My Dad is a retired Pastor, and my Mom was such a huge support for him in many ways. Thank you!

I love mix and matching with a color palette when I travel. It makes it much easier to go with just carryon luggage. You showed 8 different pairs of shoes with these outfits. I would definitely narrow it down to 3 as your list states.

I’m going to Europe on the 4th, I know I’m over packed I have a pair of Sneakers I’m wearing to travel, 3 pair of sandals and one pair of dressy heeled sandals. I’ll be away for a month 15 days on a European river cruise and two weeks in England. I have three dresses 2 pair of dressy pants, 3 pair of jeans one wide leg linen pant and 1 pair of white jeans and a pair of yellow jeans. We are going to the symphony in Austria so I have dressy pants and a Lilly silk blouse or my dressy dress. I have a couple of long sleeve tees, and a cardigan a linen jacket and a denim jacket. I have about 15 tops which are blouses and tees 3 sets of sleepwear. I’m taking a medium Away expandable and the larger Away expandable carryon. I have a couple of clutch bags and two small cross body bags. And a Kiplinger bag as my one personal bag. I probably won’t wear some of it but we are going for a month.

Really good ideas. When you mentioned fabrics that was a learning moment for me. I will leave my linens at home. Just spent a month in Europe with carry on only. No problem packing. I put my shoes in the outside compartments and use cloth packing bags. The flat clutch is also a great idea.

Rather than a dressy clutch I purposely bought a black "patent leather" look makeup bag. It holds my make up until I need to get fancy for dinner and then I dump it out and use it for the evening and afterwards reload my makeup. No need for an extra purse for those formal nights on the ship when I'm already taking that tiny makeup bag. I travel carryon only so everything must do multiple jobs. Just back from a three month trip (London+49 day cruise to Australia+1 month in Aus/NZ) with just a carryon and a shoulder bag.

Great tips! We traveled in the Spring and the temperatures were unpredictable. I took warm undergarments from Cuddle Duds. They are light weight and don’t take up much room in the suitcase. I had 3 different weights of travel pants but none were really warm. When it was cold, I wore the Cuddle Duds under my travel pants from Athleta. I have found that when I buy quality travel items I use them for years to come. We enjoyed the opera. ❤️😉🎶

I like having a linen scarf for summer because it can lightly shade parts of my body, like shoulders, that I don’t want more sun on, without making me hotter. I got mine from H&M, it’s not at all soft, but was cheap.

Under garments weren't covered in this video but I can highly recommend On Gossamer travel underwear. They can be washed in the sink and take an hour to dry (or 1 minute with a blowdryer). They are lined where they need to be, but the main fabric is tissue thin and even the elastic is sort of perforated so it dries faster. I take three pairs on every trip, but if I was willing to wash them everyday I could cut that down to one. I don't know how durable they are so I never wear them at home - I save them for travel. I just watched a video on another channel by a woman doing a very long trip and her packing list included 21 underwear! Guess she only wanted to do laundry every 3 weeks? Clearly she wasn't travelling with carryon only. I don't even own 21 pairs of underwear.

When I first heard this, I didn’t believe it, but it’s actually true. If you ROLL your clothes - shirts, pants, dresses,etc. - you can fit way more into your suitcase😄

‘Europe’ is a big place and includes half of Turkey so I will just talk about northern Europe. The best tip I can give is to pack layers. With climate change we get really extreme weather conditions now; sometimes it feels like 4 seasons in a week. T-shirts, cotton or light knit (eg cashmere) jumpers, lightweight and heavy weight trousers, shorts or skirts and dresses for really hot days. A raincoat is essential. If you are sight-seeing please be respectful of other people’s cultures. Please take a light jacket or shawl into a church if you are sleeveless and/or in shorts and remind the men in your lives to remove their hats (one of my pet peeves). I would suggest packing a refillable water bottle. Buying lots of bottled water gets expensive and is not great for the planet. If you are looking for comfortable/stylish/sturdy trainers if pounding the streets you can’t go wrong with Calla. They are expensive but really worth every penny. Happy travels x

Thanks Kay for another great video. I like your travel capsule although I would prefer a little more colour. My husband and I will be in Europe in August and September. We are very casual travellers and I usually have a similar wardrobe to the one you suggest although I try to stick to 3 pairs of shoes. I travel carryon but need to keep my bag to no more than 7 kg (max limit for carryon to in and out of Australia) which is extremely challenging. I would have liked a bit more emphasis on fabric choice (cotton and linens for summer or wool and cashmere in winter). I always take linen pants in the summer. Yes they always crush but they still look fabulous. I would love to see follow up videos on travel toiletries, a winter capsule or ski holiday capsule.

Great video as always, but I cringed at the opening when I saw the shoes in your suitcase. Shoe soles are dirty….my shoes always go in bags, either actual shoe bags, or most often just in plastic bags saved from the grocery store so they don’t get on my clean clothes.

Thank you for this, it looks like it took a lot of work. I keep a packing list in my phone and when we were traveling, before covid, I would edit the list as I was traveling. Mostly deleting items that I didn't need. Too many long pants, too many dressy tops, too many bathing suits, and too many socks. I am glad to still have that list for our trip in September.

I have a 40-year old pair of Rockport low-wedge sandals that are bliss to wear. I’ve had them repaired and refurbished so many times that I’ve decided to hoard them for future summer traveling rather than finish them off with more everyday wear. I’ve never yet found such a comfortable shoe, and they never look out of style. Similarly, I’m hoarding some light-colored, cool, viscose knit dresses for travel. I can’t wear those polyester “travel” clothes, the breathability and wicking claims are just advertising nonsense, these fabrics are just plastic.
