I'm tempted to buy this by the industrial design alone. GKD/ZPG always put extra effort to add flair compared to blandness of Ambernic or Powkiddy and I respect that.

GKD is so overlooked, and this OS is compatible with their older devices!!! So cool

  • @PixelShade

I have to applaud GKD for doing something different. You can tell that it is heavily inspired by the Game Gear, but at the same time they have a lot of their own design touches. If they skipped the logo on the front and sourced a brighter screen for the device I could definitely see myself getting one. Especially since I was a "Game Gear"-kid back in the 90's and have a lot of nostalgia for the voluptuous 90's design language. :)

I think companies should be diversifying their designs more. I love Gameboy as much as the next person, but there seems to be a million variations of imitations out there.
I'd like to see the Mega Drive inspired ones, the dual shock design ones, or even a quirky Arcade themed ones with the trackballs, beat em' up joysticks, or mini steering wheels and flappy rear peddles for shoulder buttons.

0:44 you forgot about the best part of the game gear: there was an accessory that allowed you to watch over the air TV. So you could bring a portable TV to school, which was about as mind blowing as you can imagine in 1990.

I like it. I have a Steam Deck (albeit a secondhand cheap one), and I am cautious to sit it down carefully and not leave it places it will be dropped or knocked about. But this GKD device is the kind of gadget you don't mind tossing across the room onto the bed or couch when you need to answer the door or go the bathroom. It's refreshing to not feel uptight about the care needed to protect a thing.

Love the somewhat Mega Drive/Saturn style D-Pad this has, I like to use two types of D-Pads, the soft, rollable Mega Drive style, and the microswitch precise style, no one has cracked mixing the two types yet, unless you count the Neo Geo CD gamepads D-Stick, which might be the perfect 8-Way directional control type, only handheld with that is the awsome Neo Geo Pocket & NGPC. And someone finnaly made larger AB buttons, which I love, makes so much more sense intuitively to use.

When I was a kid, I loved the game boy, and I could only ever get my hands on the gb pocket, finally, on release, but the game gear was also discontinued already, so one of my friends gave me an old game gear for my birthday. It had some issues, though. It would power off randomly after a few minutes lol.
To me, at the time, the screen didn’t look too washed out or anything, it was pretty amazing! I wished I could fix the one I had everytime I looked at it. I remember it was gifted to me with sonic 3 already inside the cartridge slot.

Find a list of the TOP 25 games for the system, then 10-15 of games you like if not on the favorites list, then a few games that you MIGHT like to play, this normally does not go over 50 games for each system and makes it manageable and quicker to find a game you want to play...

But then I tried one my friend bought... and it was terrible. I was _so glad_ I didn't buy one. Even now, going back to try all those old games, I haven't found a single Game Gear title which actually seems worth playing... especially on modern devices where I can play the "real" versions of most of the games instead of gamegear demakes.

I wonder if taking a Mr Clean Magic Eraser to the Bubble logo would clean up space for the digital bezel. I like the idea and it's nice considering how many vertical Gameboy inspired clones exist. I am a bit concerned about button layout for Sega games. The ARC will always have a place because the six face buttons but for the Bubble, the face buttons are mixing and matching between Game Gear and Nintendo style layouts. Think I'd prefer this device for 2 button or less Genesis, Game Gear and Sega arcade games and save the 3 or 6 button for the ARC. For that usage, they probably didn't need an RK3566. Though it makes me wish we had an ARC with a better chipset for Saturn, Dreamcast, Naomi and the higher end Sega arcade games. Could work as a good NEO-GEO portable too.

Well, I don't remember if the D-Pad always felt like it does now that the Game Gear is 30+ years old, but yeah, my GG D-Pad also feel quite bad in comparison to the great Mega Drive and Saturn D-Pads (actually there are different revisions of the MD D-Pad and I got some official SEGA controllers that have quite the bad ones).
Btw, what I really miss besides the MD D-Pad on modern controllers are the bigger, concave buttons. The small convex ones dig into my fingers after a while, depending on the game played and the size of said buttons. Some devices are worse than others.

@@JonathanHolt1988 it was considered normal back in the 90s, no point comparing it to today's standards

It looks nice but having the arc in my possession I think I am good on the Sega system emulation front.

yeah every time i see something that tries to invoke sega vibes i think that the arc probably does it more solidly. anbernic should really just make a new arc with a better screen and internals enough to adequately emulate saturn

To me the Steam Deck looks like a future game Gear.

awesome video as usual, russ! quick question: what are some other handhelds that have 6 face buttons like the rg-arc that you showed? interested in one of these strictly for fighting games. tia!

I wish the menu botton was round. I know that would deviate from the GG aesthetic, but the kidney bean doesn't look right to me because of the placement.

I like how..."kiddish" this looks. Like, I can see my kids really enjoying this because it "looks" like a kids toy.

I get confused with all these devices, we need to understand what level they can play, or something like GPUs comparison based on FPS/resolution or something.

Maybe they kept the screen dim to reflect what the Game Gear was like?

Game Gear, the eater of AA batteries. Would burn through batteries at a rate of over 1 AA per hour. Gameboy knew what they were doing with using older tech in their handheld since it was able to get about 7 hours per AA battery.

Game Gear was fine as long as you were sitting next to an outlet and had the AC adapter.

I need a PC handheld or a high end android handheld with the Game Gear form factor bc the Game Gear is my favorite handheld as far as how it feels in hand

I want the black one! This is what a retromod GameGear would look like! I do hope they improve the screen brightness though,
Just ordered a Trimui Smart Pro LOL.... my collection is getting ridiculous and Anbernic this yr alone along with its inclusion of DMG colours for every single device hasnt helped!!!! Im abit like Dweeb but i avoided the DMG colour with the Trim!
Im of the idea there should be a handheld for different occassions one for pocketability, one for rugged everyday cheap use, one for bed, one that does the majority and is sort of good allrounder.....
ie you wouldnt play a steamdeck in bed etc or take it to the loo XDDD and you wouldnt dare take it outside!
