I saw that trio with Trilok in Chicago in 1989 and it was a game changer for me. Put me on a different path musically. Recently saw the Shakti show in Portland, OR and it was just fantastic.
This is a showcase of such great musicianship. As a musician from India, made me feel like I was sitting right in front of these legendary musicians I have idolised for all of my life. With John McLaughlin. So grateful to be experiencing this. I'm super super happy to see Shankar Mahadevan on tiny desk. Made my entire year. It's enchanting.
I’ve long been a fan of John McLaughlin. One consistent feature of all the concerts (and videos) with him is how happy -or perhaps better, how _joyful_- everyone playing always seems. What wonderful music.
This is wonderful. I love all these musicians. John McLaughlin is one of the greatest guitarists alive today. His love of jazz and Indian music has been a constant for decades. Mr. Shankar has the voice of an angel. Thanks for posting this.
I've been to a few John McLaughlin concerts and I've seen a few more. I don't recall him smiling quite as much as he has during this Instant masterpiece.
Utterly amazing and joyous music. I'm not religious but there is a spirituality in this music which is palpable. The musicians are on a higher level and simply feel the music passing through them.
After listening to this several times over the last 3 days, now I'm playing it in the background while working on my pages. Nothing like this to keep you high and joyful!!
I got to see Mahavishnu a bunch of times, and Shakti teice when the first albums came out. This is the most complex music in the world, yet it flows. Notice how they come out of a blindingly fast passage and stop on a dime together? Then start again, then STOP. Never a note out of place. To my ear these are the most virtuosic musicians on the planet.
Seeing this makes me wonder how I've slept on Shakti so long! It's like Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Hermeto Pascoal meets Indian raga... awesome. Not to mention that each musician here is so unbelievably talented! Wow!

Saw them live at the Ryman in Nashville in August. One of the greatest music experiences of my life. Glad to see them shared with a broader audience here. 🙌
Tears of joy as I heard the first notes of Lotus Feet. Shakti has been such an integral part of my love for music. Thank you NPR for bringing us this brilliant tiny gem.
oml this is my two favourite universes colliding!! My parents are classical music enthusiasts and had me listening to the Remember Shakti concerts even before I could fully talk. Icb I'm seeing these absolute maestros on Tiny Desk today! The only things that could have made this better was if the legendary U Srinivas were still around to be a part of this!
Echoes of going back half a lifetime to the Freetrade Hall in Manchester, UK and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and threads that leads us here. Music linked to the heart. The inner Mounting Flame. It never leaves you. Good to see John doing what he does...still, and friends.
NPR just casually dropped one of their most wildest concerts. I cannot even fathom half of the talent I am being shown on this screen.

This is just as amazing, if not moreso. But if you've never seen Trilok, you're missing out on something else very special as well.
Greatest drummer / percussionist of all time IMO. His stuff with Joe Zawinul blew my mind when I first heard it.
I saw that trio with Trilok in Chicago in 1989 and it was a game changer for me. Put me on a different path musically. Recently saw the Shakti show in Portland, OR and it was just fantastic.
oh yes, never saw them but have the live recording, mindbendingly beautiful
I saw that trio in 1989 but with Jonas Hellborg filling in for Jeff Berlin.
And, yes, Trilok Gurtu is absolutely amazing.
This is the greatest line up I've ever seen in Tiny Desk. Living legends
Their enthusiasm is contagious!
Whoever is responsible for making this possible needs a raise NOW
This is wonderful. I love all these musicians. John McLaughlin is one of the greatest guitarists alive today. His love of jazz and Indian music has been a constant for decades. Mr. Shankar has the voice of an angel. Thanks for posting this.
5 Musicians from 5 different background making Sync of Life.!.
Incredible❤
Saw Shakti first in 1973, the journey continues…John is a spiritual brother to me and Zakir inspired me to learn tabla from him!! 🙏🏻
I've been to a few John McLaughlin concerts and I've seen a few more. I don't recall him smiling quite as much as he has during this Instant masterpiece.
It's so great to hear "Lotus Feet" again! One of the greatest written pieces.
Lotus feet is the most beautiful song I have heard in my life
This is what being in presence of something divine feels like.
4x7 + 4x3 = 28 + 12 = 40 quarter notes - which is ten beats. Absolutely beautiful interpretation of jhaptaal.
I thought it would be tentaal omg
@@almendratlilkouatl nope lol. Think about the overall structure.
Some of the most joyous music expression I have heard in a long while. Shankar Mahadevan is so much fun to listen to!
Indian legends in one frame! Mazaa aagaya!
Utterly amazing and joyous music. I'm not religious but there is a spirituality in this music which is palpable. The musicians are on a higher level and simply feel the music passing through them.
I LOVE Shankar Mahadevan! He's one of my favorite singers! I'm so glad I accidentally found this!
this has to be my fav thing on youtube this year
After listening to this several times over the last 3 days, now I'm playing it in the background while working on my pages.
Almost can’t believe John McLaughlin is 81 years old!
This sent chills of joy thru me...then after a couple minutes I realized it was the Mahavishnu!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
hi there, another Shakti fan from Indonesia🙏🏿❤️🤍
ありがとうありがとう🥲感動しました🥲ありがとう🙏
Shankar Mahadevan with John McLaughlin and Zakir Hussain...arguably the greatest assemble in fusion music..!!
Seeing this makes me wonder how I've slept on Shakti so long! It's like Mahavishnu Orchestra meets Hermeto Pascoal meets Indian raga... awesome. Not to mention that each musician here is so unbelievably talented! Wow!
Treat to see these Ustads on Tiny Desk. ❤❤❤
It’s 31st Dec 2023 11:50pm here and I’m going from 2023 to 2024 listening to this video that an unknowable algorithm threw at me and I’m considering myself a very lucky person right now.
Love you all. It’s alright. You’re alright. Hugs.
Beautiful. Saw the original Shakti in London, 1975, and saw this lineup last month in Davis CA. Thank you TinyDesk!!
I was at the Davis show. Still buzzing weeks after. Flew in from SLC.
Absolutely mind-blowing music! Would have loved Vikku to be part of this (Ghatam sound is integral to Shakti soundscape) but his son does a great job of filling in the void. John Mclaughlin sitting in semi-lotus postion for 20min at 81years?! Wow! This new Shakti's music as divine & spiritual as the 70s 80s Shakti! Winning Grammy is but a small compliment to the level of muscicianship of these maestros.Thank you Tiny Desk! This needs to reach a few million views. Make Music, Not War.
Never once would have imagined these guys on this stage. Madness.
That second number is exactly what I always wanted, the melancholic Indian notes with a contrasting electric guitar.....thanks for that wonderful tune
I saw the thumbnail and was like “ok, cool never heard of them but I’ll check it out.” And what?! Zakir Hussein and McLaughlin! How had I missed this group all this time. So good.
so cool to see Shankar Mahadevan at tiny desk!!
I love them 50 years ago and still today!❤Many thanks for this performance
I was lucky enough to see Shakti live in 1978 at the Glenn Miller Ballroom on the CU Boulder campus. It was awesome...as is this!
With combined experience of 200 years, this will break barriers
Closer to 300 between them.
Saw them live at the Ryman in Nashville in August. One of the greatest music experiences of my life. Glad to see them shared with a broader audience here. 🙌
Do you know that that concert was also streamed/archived on TH-cam?
Every true musicians will appreciate this incredible pool of talented & seasoned musicians without boundaries /relegion /race .
This is incredible!! These are world renowned musicians. Each is a master artist in his own instrument. Can't believe they're doing a tiny desk!
Tears of joy as I heard the first notes of Lotus Feet. Shakti has been such an integral part of my love for music. Thank you NPR for bringing us this brilliant tiny gem.
Never seen anything like it. Absolutely beautiful
oml this is my two favourite universes colliding!! My parents are classical music enthusiasts and had me listening to the Remember Shakti concerts even before I could fully talk. Icb I'm seeing these absolute maestros on Tiny Desk today! The only things that could have made this better was if the legendary U Srinivas were still around to be a part of this!
Ooh ! That’s my « crazy dance moment » record since 2000 when I was 15. So happy to see you are still playing and healthy. Love from France 🇫🇷 ❤!
Echoes of going back half a lifetime to the Freetrade Hall in Manchester, UK and the Mahavishnu Orchestra and threads that leads us here. Music linked to the heart. The inner Mounting Flame. It never leaves you. Good to see John doing what he does...still, and friends.
Can't express how happy this makes me. Some of the greatest musicians of our country right there!
