Radionuclides are just radioactive elements. If a small particle of them becomes airborne or if it gets attached to an aerosol, then it becomes a radioactive aerosol.

Thinking of the inverse square rule, wouldn't distance be as effective as mass in protection from fallout. So as long as you are filtering your air and stay toward the center of your house, no underground bunker is needed for fallout shelter.
