    Not all German soldiers were blood thirsty. Many fought for their people, not for Hitler.

    • @applepie4287
      @applepie4287 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      @zionistatwork123 No you're generalizing there. It is highly unlikely borderline impossible that not a single German soldier fought for their people. Just take for instance the end of the war were German divisions held back the Red Army so that the people of Berlin can flee to the American and British army to surrender. Those people were definitely fighting for their people. Hitler was still alive, and the Nazi government still existed yet they continued as they wanted to prevent as many Germans as possible from falling into Soviet hands so they disobeyed orders. Are you saying in that the 9th army didn't want to defend the German people but were instead doing that so they won't get shot or disgrace their family?. No those men were fighting to defend their family and the German people.

      That was true of British.
      They didnt have a choice either.
      75% of Americans were drafted.
      Only 25% signed up of their own free will.
      Fascism and eugenics were very very popular in both Britain and the USA.
      Spain had a very weak fascist state.
      The allies didnt even bother deposing Franco.
      I counted 66 Fascist groups in the UK.
      I counted one in Ireland (in 1923)

      Name one !
      The only group in Ireland which were remotely fascist were the Army comrades association (blueshirts) after the civil war.
      They lasted ONE YEAR. 1932 - 1933.
      One group , one year.
      Britain had 66.
      Every other country , especially the USA and UK had thriving fascist organisations that are still there.

    I'm glad you gave the german roles to actual germans. At least the Standartenführer is. Short films and even some milion dollar productions usually don't get our language right and it feels quite strange to see a german uniform and hear an american. I'm sure even non-germans notice that. It is 100% more authentic this way. And ... well thank you for showing that there have been decent human beeings among our grandfathers.

      Don't think that i want to deny any of the atrocities done by germans. I can see your point as well. Of course i do, it is of the utmost importance that we never forget what happened and do everything we can the prevent it from happening again. I live in the Ruhrgebiet and know the stories of the suffering in the factories very well. My grandmother witnessed it first hand, she worked in an ammunition factory back then. I feel very sorry for your family and all the countless milions who suffered and died so horribly and pointless.
      But there are two sides of the story, not everytrhing was just black or white, good or evil. In those stories germans are depicted as horrible monsters all the time and that sickens me, when i think of my family. Because i have both sides in my ancestry. One of my grandfathers came from a family of fanatical nazis and was SS-Untersturmführer. His brother died on the Scharnhorst. I'm pretty sure he took part in some terrrible actions on the eastern front. He never talked about it, but he was a nazi until his death about 15 years ago. My other grandfather was merely a farmer boy when he got drawn into the Wehrmacht. He wasn't a hero but he wasn't a monster, either. He was just a young boy at the wrong place in the wrong time and didn't really have a choice. Its a little bit like seeing both of my grandfathers when i watch this.

    I do not remember if I ever made a comment to this film so I will do so now, again if I did so once before (Have been drinking this night so memory and skills in most regards are lacking significantly). This film represents the many Whermact soldiers that faced similar occurrences not just by enemy combatants that simply deserted, but also their own men whom did the same. It is probably the best film depiction of the common soldier's outer workings in a stressed environment within their own hardened front lines with some background as to why they are the way they are. Other films also depict similar fates but forget that the audience must know why the soldier acts as he does beforehand before the final artistic stroke can be done to provide the most precise strike against the Deutsch stereotype.

    The description of the video states:
    “After executing a deserter from his own division, a lone Nazi soldier must search for his morals when he encounters two allied deserters, who wish to find a safe path home.”
    Replace the word, division, with squad. Otto was a squad leader according to the video. He would likely not have a personal knowledge of one of over 6,000 soldiers in a division.

    My great grandfather fought in WW1, 2, and in West Germany, finishing as a major. He won the iron cross 1st class in WW1 and it’s clasp in WW2. In mid 1944 he was being transferred from the Eastern front to the Western front, he stopped off at an extermination camp. He was horrified by the atrocities being committed. He then deserted a week later, training the German resistance for the rest of the war. These atrocities really shocked him, and it did for Otto as well, though it may have been a different situation, its very understandable for him try and do the right thing.

      @fanta4897 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@Arasaka107 You're underestimating the amount of time the soldiers had. Besides, more important things? Sure but shaving was pretty important. You seem to not be informed well-enough about the reasons why shaving was done so I'll inform you: if you didn't shave the early gas-masks won't create airtight seal, because of that it is crucial to shave (the only thing which was allowed for the german army was some types of moustaches because they didn't disrupt the airtight seal of the gas mask, I'm pretty sure the situation was similar to other armies of the time as well), that became apparent with WWI and was carried into WWII and later even though the gas-masks of that time were improved. Another reason is because of parasites like fleas and louses which is also a big problem (that's why soldiers have short haircuts, or even shaved head). Those are problems which will be especially present in conventional war fought by masses of soldiers, that's why today you often have western soldiers with beards - because conflicts they fight are mostly fought by small-scale units and in much better conditions (these soldiers mostly live in bases, not in mud and dirt of the battlefield).

      @Nordic of the East Texas Pines Not only odd, but goofy. A Heer soldier might get mixed in with some Waffen SS in the confusion of battle. But the Heer soldier would definitely not fall under the command of any Waffen SS soldier, regardless of rank. They would most likely fight together out of convenience and then split up after the fog of confusion had lifted to find their respective units. But most assuredly no WSS officer would or could order a Heer soldier to summarily execute a deserter, nor would a Heer soldier ever follow the order of a WSS officer.

    • @stevesandford1437
      @stevesandford1437 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Nordic of the East Texas Pines Well, the Einsatzgruppen only ever operated on the Eastern Front and were disbanded by 1943 following the establishment of purpose-built extermination camps like Treblinka, Maijdanek and Sobibor. (That is, camps that had no other purpose than mass-murder, unlike Auschwitz, which ALSO had a facility to employ slave labour). Interestingly, you are quite correct in stating that the Einsatzgruppen were SD/SS formations, (including Police Battalions) yet regular Wehrmacht troops were never involved in those sorts of operations, indeed such operations were kept quite secret from regular army units. Of course, local militia or police units (Latvian/Estonian/Ukranian) were often co-opted into that killing process. But Einsatzgruppen members were not affiliated to the Waffen (Combat) SS, but were security or police formations. By 1943, elements of the SD/SS were indeed inducted into the Waffen SS as a 'Polizei Regiment' employed in the East and later in France as an anti-partizan combat unit. However, the term 'Einsatzgruppen' is specific and particular to those SD/SS/Police units solely concerned with the mass execution of civilians in the Eastern Territories. xx SF

      @stevesandford1437 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@garypulliam3740 This isn't actually true! Towards the close of the war, ad-hoc battlegroups were formed and some of these would have composed Wehrmacht/Heer/Waffen SS possibly under the command of a Waffen SS officer or commander. (SS Feldgendarmerie units could and did summarily execute Werhmacht soldiers for supposed desertion or simply for refusing to obey established orders. It would be a very foolish Werhmacht soldier who disagreed with an SS officer or field commander. Indeed, given standing orders, it would be quite permissible for even an SS NCO to summarily execute even a senior army officer if it was believed that that officer was in dereliction of his duty). There are numerous accounts of this happening. xx SF
