Adequate Clearance | Learn to drive: Basic skills

  • Maintaining a safe gap to other traffic when driving will reduce danger and can even prevent a crash. This gap is known as ‘adequate clearance’, and maintaining this around our vehicle helps create a safety zone to allow for other drivers mistakes. To help us judge the size of this safety zone around all four sides of our car there are four rules to stick to when driving - this video will go through each of the rules and what they look like while we are driving on the road. Stay tuned for bonus footage after the end titles!
    This video covers;
    • Follow other vehicles at least 2 seconds behind
    • Pass parked vehicles with a ‘doors width’ gap
    • When stopping in traffic keep the next cars tyres in view
    • Stay diagonal to other traffic on multi-lane roads

    Also, I try to keep distance when stopping behind a car in a traffic because if an emergency vehicle shows up, you need some space to move to the side of the road to allow wide enough passage for the emergency vehicle to be safe.

    Well presented; but here’s a minor comment: In a DSA guide book publication, it advises that one should be aware of what’s behind when deciding what your braking distance should be, not just the weather etc. Essentially, if something is much too close, you can’t do an emergency stop, so the only option is to widen the gap a bit in front.

    For the Doors Width Gap, MUST the distance be 1 Meter, or could it be approximate? The car I was tested on has door sensors, so beeps when you are within 30 inches, and I failed for side clearance, but must have been at least 30 inches away because the car sensors did not chirp or beep. Also, when I passed the parked truck, I was driving in bumper to bumper traffic at 2 to 6 MPH, so does passing on the side depend on speed as well?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  ปีที่แล้ว

      The 1 meter, or ‘doors width’ gap is approximate - but it is OK to pass a little closer when driving slowly (10mph or less). Our car beeps sometimes (and even applies the brakes!) when going too close to parked cars - but not every time, so is not a reliable way of measuring the gap. Just give plenty of space (1 - 1.5M) in order to reduce danger to a minimum and the examiner should be happy. 👍🏼

    In Pakistan..Horn is enough for everything..

    • @AbdulAzizLearner
      @AbdulAzizLearner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Horn is extremely abused there. My elderly father ran into an accident due to a honker who was honking behind him when my father was at a busy T-junction (minor to major road) about to turn left. He got under pressured and hit something on the left side (luckily wasn't a major accident).
      These are tragic everyday situations that reveal mentally ill masses.

    What is the best way to deal with cars parked near a junction on a two way road but with several cars meaning I have to keep more centre but then I need to turn left. During my first lesson I was not in the correct position after passing cars (too far right) which made turning left very wide.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We should do our best to stay in our lane as much as possible, but as you mention parked cars will force us out of position sometimes. When this happens, be extra careful not to get in the way of oncoming traffic.

There are so many variations on videos about what to do correctly that I know for a fact I'm going to fail my road test. What I mean by variation is that no one gives exact information needed to know to do everything that is needed for everything needed to know for driving.
