More information on this type of brake needs to be explained ... I have a trailer with this system that that tows forward lovely but reversing it locks up and groans and maybe jackknifes as one wheel is free another will lock up ..... I am going to need to check that top pivot collapses
So it brakes lovely as I used a ratchet strap to squeeze the draw bar ... handbrake pulled on works okay rocking back and forward stationary .... so if I ratchet strap the draw bar to simulate reversing and check rear free wheel both wheels rotate freely ( on jack stands). so confused
My other trailer with same set up is fine ? but the draw bar tube seem to always want to rotate after I unhitch as if its its bent and trying to screw itself out ? but not by eye ,is that a valid reason ?

Just replaced all cables and fitted new shoes to my trailer. I referred to your excellent video as a guide, mainly to see which way round to fit the expanders but subsequently noticed the comment below about the expanders being the wrong way round. Does this matter or should I start again.

Hi I have a caravan new to me. Handbrake didn't hold.
I adjusted the handbrake using the wheel and it holds forward but not backwards.
The handbrake lever doesn't go to the back of the position and as such could this be the reason.
How would I fit out which brakes are on the van I know it's alko system
    Thanks

This sounds like the brakes have not been adjusted at the wheels first with the expanders fully closed as if the expanders are open this will alter the travel on the shoes.

Hei! When I drive reverse my brian james trailer want to stop immediately, so maybe some rust of some reverse mechanism? or brake pads are to close? Before I was thinking that problem is in damper, but after replacement still problem.

      Hi
Check the adjustment is all correct, when adjusting always turn the drum in the direction it would go as you travel forward. if you turn in the other direction this will activate the Auto reverse mechanism. check the reverse mechanism us operating correctly, and make sure all moving parts are operating freely including the brake cables.
      Hope this helps

Hi Great Videos, can you advise if the expander in your video is the wrong way round. Looking at other videos and another of yours, where you stated it was the wrong way round, the expander here is the same way, which would suggest its the wrong way round. Thanks

Why dont they have disc brakes?

    • @TowingAndTrailersLtd

      Hi
I don't Know why disk brakes are not widely used but I do understand that there are some developed.
I understand but can't be sure that it is to do with the fact that brakes in Europe and the UK work on an overrun system then need to reverse automatically I have heard of a couple of ways that disk brakes have been manufactured but it has been too expensive to be adopted for mass use. due to this it has never taken off as larger numbers are required for production.
Please note this is just rumours I have heard and may not be entirely true but I have not seen any information about disk brakes for over 10 years.
      Hope this helps

@@TowingAndTrailersLtd I’ve just realised that if disc brakes are not used outside over winter they will rust badly.. as do cars disc brakes if unused..
