- Dr Watkins describes in detail how to use your Ozempic pen for your medication injections.
** NOTE: In the interest in keeping this video as brief as possible, we did not include the instructions for 'priming' your pen for first use. Some of you have correctly mentioned in the comments that this is a recommended step prior to your first injection. The printed instructions on how to prime your pen are included on the paper insert inside your Ozempic box.

It can certainly be scary and intimidating. So glad that you found our video helpful. Best of luck on your journey!

Interesting, my Doc said to put the needle on first, then dial in my setting. I did not know that I had to wait 6 seconds though after it stopped the ticking / delivery.
I was also told to pinch and hold the skin area I am injecting into as well.
You don’t have to pinch the skin! You can dial in first or put the needle on first, up to you!

Good Morning this was very helpful. This is my 2nd time using pen and I noticed the dose counter window did not go back to zero. I guessing I didn't press long enough and that is why it shows the lines not zero. Should I wait for the following Sunday, which is the day I give myself the injection or do it again today. uggg
Sorry to hear that you had trouble. Unfortunately, I can't give you medical advice via TH-cam and you should check with your prescribing physician. It's not uncommon for people to have the same trouble and it could be a result of not holding down the button long enough or it could be as a result of the pen being jammed. The tricky part is that you really can't be sure how much medication was actually delivered today...
... right. So I count 6 AFTER the clicking sound, not during. Crazy how I'm halfway on my 2nd pen and only found out about this and wonder why it looks as if the needle is primed as soon as I screw it in.
Yes, count to 6 AFTER the clicking stops
Thank you for the video, very clear and concise.
What time do you recommend taking the injection? Morning, After food
Glad that you found the video helpful!
While you can take your injection at any time and you don't need to time your injection around when you last had food, many of my patients take the injections right before bedtime if they are worried about the potential for nausea, etc.
Thank you for the instructions. İs it easy to take it to the plane while traveling?
Shouldn't be an issue, but we do have a video on how to travel with your pen!
Thank you so much!! You were clear and so was the demonstration. You trailed off, mumbled or the sound went low a bit at the end and it sounded like what you said about keeping the pen out for max 8 wks wasnt the same as what you said when the sound dropped off. Im probably just being paranoid about this new thing! Will watch every time I imagine👍💛.😉
She said once you take it out of refridgeration, it's still good for up to 8 weeks. So just don't take it out of the fridge until you're ready to use it the first time. After that it's one shot a week so it's only six weeks to use them all anyway.
Sorry about that! You are correct that the pen can be kept out of the fridge for 8 weeks :)
@@watkinsmetabolic Thanks for clarification! Sadly, 5 more shots and medicare will not pay. Its $1338/mo WITH good rx! It has been the only thing thats worked so far. One would think theyd want people to have it. I appreciate your taking the time to respond. Be blessed my dear!
@@jellicle1684 so sorry to hear that! Cost is the major hurdle for most patients, sadly!
Thank you for the video , I've recently been put on ozempic my levels are very high , but I will admit I'm worried about the side effects anyone had and issues with them plz

Thanks so much. I just completed my 1st box of 6 injections 4 injections were 0.25 and the last 2 injections were 0.5 mg. Should I start my next box at the higher 0.25 and stay at that mg forever now..? Appreciate your help and very helpful video. Thank you.
While I can't give you specific medical advice via social media, most people stay at .5 for four weeks but it should always tailored for the specific patient. I suggest reaching out to your prescribing physician for specific advice. 🙂
@@watkinsmetabolic Thank you
Do you need to prime the pen for each new needle? Or is the first time good for all the others? I read somewhere you should prime it for the air in each needle. Thank you.
No, not each new needle. You just need to prime each new pen. Once the pen is primed, you're good until you need to start a new one. 👍🏻
@@watkinsmetabolic would be helpful to show how to prime for new pens.
Yes😂just had my first one
Great! Good luck!
Can you tell me where we can order practice pens and house etc to teach my colleagues how to puncture? The box in which injections are done seems particularly useful to me, but also empty pens that we can fill with water, for example, to practice.
I'm not aware of any practice pens that are refillable with water. Unfortunately, the demo pens are also not available at this time because of supply challenges. Injection box that you see in the video is available from the manufacturer of the medication, Novo Nordisk. Please feel free to share this video with your colleagues and patients as it details the correct injection technique.
Rybelsus not effective, I may have to switch to Ozempic. I think like taking blood glucose levels, I was quite apprehensive, but it’s no big deal now doing that. Hopefully when I do decide to switch, it’ll go smoothly like your instructions here. Thank You!
Glad we could help! Good luck!
1st injection and i am nervous but did it
Congrats, Patricia. Best of luck!
Good video. Thank you. The word capillary is pronounced in American parlance as "cap' illary," with the emphasis on the "cap." The British, however, say, "cap il' iary," with the emphais on the "il." You used the British pronunciation here, which I found interesting. My inference that Canada uses the British form of the word, which I did not know previously. Larry M. Goldstein
You bet, Larry. Canadian English spelling and pronunciation is based on British English, particularly in medicine. Nice catch! 😉
I recently started taking this medicine. I found your video to the best of those explaining how it's done. Thanks. Larry@@watkinsmetabolic
@@user-tx2mj6uz6v so happy that you found it helpful! Thanks so much for the feedback, it is very much appreciated. Happy New Year!
Do I need to prime the pen every week? Or just before the first time ever?
Just the first time you use a new pen
Thanks for this. I have a question I’m new to Ozempic and my dose now is 1mg but is there a way to take less say 0.5 mg some weeks the side effects are a lot and I’d like to dial down but I have a 1mg pen. How can I ?
It is possible to take a .5mg dose using a 1mg pen. We can't give medical or dosing advice over social media, so you should check with your doctor or pharmacist who can give you detailed instructions on how to get the lower dose from your pen.
ok tysm !@@watkinsmetabolic
Excellent video. But I was instructed to keep the pen in the refrigerator.
There is no harm in keeping it in the fridge!
I have 2mg yellow pen for the first time. The dial went back to zero, but I don't see the gray plunger. The pen still looks full. Please advise.
Wow that is great that you were able to get the 2 mg yellow pen! It is normal not to see the plunger move with the first injection :)
Very good instructions! But, why do they only give us 6 pins and not 8 or at least let us buy 2 more for those of use that are on .25 that will need 8 pins?
The pen is pre-filled to the exact amount your presciption needs, nothing less, nothing more. When you are on the .25 dose, most prescriptions call for you to up that to .50 after 4 weeks. So it's 4 pins at .25, then your last two needles are .50, thus needing only six tips.
@@greatunz67 this is what I needed to know and the pharmacy not dr explain any of this!!!
It is because the first pen is designed to deliver 6 doses. You can ask your pharmacist or doctor for a few extra needles if you are doing a slower titration!
Does it matter when to inject Ozempic: in the morning or before sleeping? Should one take food immediately or not? And when in the amdomina should it be done? Around stomach or lower? Does it matter at all?
Doesn’t matter, whatever works best for you!
@@watkinsmetabolic Thank you!
My doc is sending a pen that each does is 1mg and 4 doses in a pen. Do you know if I can just inject 0.5mg to make my pen last 2 months? If I’m not ready to move up to 1mg? It will be a different pen so I’m just wondering if you know.
You can deliver a half dose (0.5mg) using the 1mg pen. Chat with your pharmacist to get directions on how to dial in the correct settings on the new pen.
Im on my second week of ozempic. However i didnt feel any obvious side effects yet. Should i be worry or thankful for that haha. But i feel kinda weight gain too especially around my abdomen, just the feeling but my weight is remain the same tho. Im so confusedd
So glad you aren’t having side effects! Low doses of this medication are not intended to cause any weight loss - they are designed to ensure you tolerate the medication so you can slowly increase the dose to the amount that may potentially lead to weight loss.
I am using Ozempic 0.5 every Wednesday. Last week I didn’t have any so I missed it. Yesterday after picked up from pharmacy, I injected, pushed it till came back to zero, then I released my finger without waiting for 6 seconds. Now I wonder if I injected all of it. Can you please advise. Thank you.
Not to worry! The extra few seconds on the end is just an extra step to ensure that you don't pull the pen out too early. If you kept the pen inserted until the dial returned to zero, it is most likely that you received your full dose. 👍🏻
I just used it now for the first time but I hadn’t counted to 6 .. I just realized that now .. should I try it again now?
Sorry, I can't give you medical advice through this platform, but if you have questions you should check with your prescribing physician. :)
Can I turn it back to the right dose if I go past it
Yes, so long as you haven't started pressing the button already.
I live in Canada. Do I need a doctor's prescription to get this injection?
Yes, in Canada you must have a prescription from a licenced healthcare practitioner in order to get Ozempic.
Hi! I need help. I did my first dose today 0,25 from a 1 mg pen. The problem is, after i selected the dose and injected, the pen still looks full of liquid like theres nothing missing. Do you think it didnt inject anything?
When you are just starting a new pen, it's normal to not notice a change in the liquid chamber. If your pen returned to zero, it injected
Hello,
I have been taken Ozempic for three months now and for the first time instantly got a bubble on the injection site. It did go down but did not completely go away. Is that normal?
It can be…just make sure you are inserting the needle all the way to the hub
Are you using it for weight loss if yes then did you lose any weight?
That was a 327 dollars test. Amazing video but hurts to watch how much money you spent on producing it (hurts way more than Ozempic’s needle!).
Great job and thank you for making this video!
We're glad that you found it helpful!
Mine is free because I have Medicare part D... but I see the cost before and I'm like Holy shit
Hi, I am diabetic and have been taking Ozempic for a little over a year now. This time when I did the shot I must not have been concentrating enough. Instead of putting the needle straight in, it was at a bit of an angle and I couldn't adjust it because the medication was already going into my skin. I think it only went just under the skin because I have a bit of a bump on the area where the shot was applied and it is a bit red. Did I lose a dose by not having the shot by doing it incorrectly? If so, should I just wait until next week (Friday) for my next shot to take the medication and not worry about the inaccurate application this time? This was the first time this happened. I don't know if the medication will penetrate into my body or if it will just sit under the skin.
Hi! Generally speaking, this should not be an issue but if you are concerned and looking for specific medical advice, I would talk to your physician or pharmacist. Even if you do miss a dose one week, it isn’t concerning.
Thank you. I will just wait and take my next dose as scheduled. Maybe it slowly went into my system.
I’m assuming you have to swab area with alcohol. ??
It's not necessary. The needle is as small as one used for a glucometer so alcohol swabs aren't required.
After it returns to zero, How do you take the following dose? Do you have to reset the pen? How will i know its set on the right amount?
Each time you inject using your pen, it resets to zero so that it's prepared for the next dose. You dial from zero each time and the pen injects the dose selected for that injection. If there isn't enough medicine left in the pen for a full dose, you won't be able to turn the dial beyond the amount remaining inside the pen.
@@watkinsmetabolic Thank you.
Is it normal after injecting some liquid comes out . I put needle in waited till it went to zero waited a couple of seconds after that , then removed needle and some liquid came out from needle . Is this normal
Yes, that is not unusual.
I goofed. I take 1mg Wegovy; was given 1 mg Ozempic as a sub. Pushed the pen in, but it seemed to take too long to hit zero. I pulled it out and reset it. I like the one and done of Wegovy. This has me worried. I’m sick this week, so I don’t think I’ll be eating much, but still. It could mess me up when/if I get it right next week.
Wegovy pens only come as 2.4 mg dose, not sure about a 1 mg Wegovy pen. The 1 mg ozempic pen does take a while to deliver the medication. Make sure to hold the button until the dial returns to zero, and then for a few seconds after.
@@watkinsmetabolic thank you! Although I got a tiny bit last night, no where near the 1mg, do I wait or try again in a few days?
