I'm an 80s baby so bow wow was just a lil younger than me and never caught my hip-hop ear but this interview seems extremely interesting for many reasons. Finally get to see him in a light that's not filtered with Industry/Hollywood BS and hear details that are not often shared directly by the artist who experienced them. Great Job Math and Crew!

I think jd's problem is he's not vocal enough when it come to certain things. His temperament is laid back and passive, and he said in the janet documentary that he hates confrontation. He let bow wow be mad at him and feel like he abandoned him at columbia instead of explaining that he was contractually unable to take him to Arista.
It will never be a "problem" for JD choosing not to discuss certain topics, it's bow wows problem. JD being JD will never be HIS problem. Bow wow is not honest and him lashing out like a child caused issues with his career and personal life. JD's career is still thriving and always will. Copy ..to summarize the rift: Bow Wow's contract was under Columbia but with JD as his mentor and producer of his 1st two albums it seemed like Bow Wow was signed to SoSodef. Until 2002 when SosoDef went to be under Arista. Then Columbia said that Bow (and Jagged Edge) had to stay with them. While Brat came with and JD got Anthony Hamilton and Bone Crusher for new Sosodef). Bow Wow was abandoned because he lost his mentor (who was also not allowed to write/produce for Columbia artists then) and worst to him, JD would never explain . As a father figure he kept telling him he'd explain it when he's older basically. But this label thing happened when Bow Wow was 15 so JD didn't feel he could grasp it or needed to understand.
It seems that as adult Bow Wow had ideas for songs , single selections, promo or whatever and JD would always little bro him. He was going to JD because he still trusted him all these years as family. Maybe cuz JD has only daughters biologically, and because he spoiled him, - but JD could never see Bow Wow as a grown man , but as his son who is forever 13 years old. Bow Wow just gets tired of it, running ideas with JD every few years to be turned away and I guess he's gotten frustrated with JD doing interviews saying how much he did for Bow Wow when Bow knows that was actually a short amount of time (of course he did A LOT for him but he also hid a lot from him and stifled him by not preparing him & not answering his questions. Though I'm sure Bow Wow's energy didn't always encourage that.). Bow does give him credit in this interview but there's an undertone of abandonment issues. JD should've explained the contracts (with a lawyer) when he left Bow Wow and he should've heard him out (even if it meant letting Bow Wow fail with the wrong single choice or something) but JD was a helicopter parent ' - the kind who will call to set up doctors appointments for their grown kids.
And Bow Wow should've realized that JD is a label guy who isn't truly his father and to separate the personal. Luckily while writing/producing didn't become his thing, Bow Wow has been a great performer and still tours in large venues and I do recall he won best tour at some award show last year . But I think he's going to always want to impress 'dad' and get his blessings

Technicalities. So So def was management, production house and a label. When Sosodef moved from Columbia to Arista, Bow Wow and Jagged Edge were contractually not allowed to go, they were directly on Columbia. Also from the press release then "Under the terms of the deal, Dupri will only produce artists in the BMG family of labels, which includes Arista, RCA, and Jive." So he couldn't even produce for Bow Wow. He left him. And signed on to terms that excluded him.
