    Her passion, discipline and dedication is probably the main reason why CATS is so good. She knew what she was doing from the very beginning and was able to portrait the best of dance to this show. What a visionary and what a legacy she left us... May she forever be dancing in the Jellicle Ball

    Say what you want about the musical, but you can't deny that Gillian's work was anything less that impeccable.

      @@matt13r1 responding to this 3 years later to say I HEAVILY disagree. Andy’s choreo is fantastic and I love that whole production, but Gillian’s choreography is what made Cats has successful as it was.

    It's amazing how many things they asked her to do, and she just repeatedly said "Yes, I can do that" and I think that's wondrous.

    I just saw this show in 2022 and her choreography is still basically untouched, just beautiful storytelling in motion. Timeless!

    She was an amazing choreographer and I’m sure anyone that got to learn from her soaked up every instruction. I’m sure she is sadly missed.

    This is why you don't just "change" the choreography anymore than you change the music! Both are integral to the show and were developed together! Both are equally important.

    • @princezzpuffypants6287
      @princezzpuffypants6287 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      This is why I cannot watch amateur showings. I went to one and they had completely changed all of the cats - it was impossible to watch! Not because of the actors, God knows, but the entire production team... (I'm still in denial that any "movie" was ever made as the entire idea is too preposterous to be entertained).
      So as not to be entirely negative, there are still some amazing professional performances going on around the world and they are very much worth seeing.

    • @alexseyboyarinov6913
      @alexseyboyarinov6913 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@princezzpuffypants6287 Sometimes producers have 'genious' idea to improve or modernize CATS choreography. But perfection cannot be improved! Of course if we say about replicas (others just don't have rights of use Gillian's choreography and have to invent their own).
      Now is going amaising Asia tour in Korea (Korean people post tons of curtain calls in Instagram). And on may 26 CATS start in Vienna again with brilliant cast (and almost all tickets are sold). I'd like very much to see Hanna Kenna Thomas playing Victoria, but I absolutely don't understand German...

      @@alexseyboyarinov6913 You seem like you know the show very well. You probably know all the lyrics by heart. Then why worry that you won't understand the language? Just go and see the show in Vienna. That production is superb and is supported by a full orchestra which is rarely ever the case nowadays.

      @alexseyboyarinov6913 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarkvanBeelen I really do know lyrics very well (literally by heart) and agree to watch CATS in any language. Unfortunately it's very difficult to visit Austria now because of pandemic restrictions (if you live outside the EU and this is not a business trip).

    I had the great pleasure of meeting Dame Gillian a few months before she sadly passed away. An amazing and inspiring woman. For me she always was the true genius behind the success of "Cats". I've seen two non-replica productions and it became obvious, that the show itself hasn't aged well, if you take away her timeless choreography.

  • @ilvabien
    @ilvabien 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Thanks for sharing the whole interview. A masterclass from a true artist. CATS couldn't be what it is without her coreography. I still remember my first time seeing the show in my country (a non-english production in 1991) and her vision and feelings about the movements and steps were there, no matter the language. I felt in love with her amazing work. Thank you Gillian, NOW AND FOREVER...

  • @sarahwithstars

    I watched cats on vhs until my dad had to rewind it on a different player to the one I watched it on.
    At 7 I studied Rosemary Ford's solos and duets so hard and could do all of Jennyannydots and Macavity.
    Musically, it's by no means a favourite production, but it is one of the most influential musicals on me because of Gillian 😓😚

    They really made history. Not many can go to see Cats on a theater, myself included, so our only reference is these video. I can be really loyal to to point of being annoying because this cast is Cats for me, and I will feel weird to watch another show with differents actors who might be just as talented or more but for me it would never match to these. And it make me nostalgic because at the early 2000s, when I was at elementary in music class our teacher put this VHS.

    Don't get me wrong, I'm loving these interviews- it's very cool seeing the behind-the-scenes stuff, and learning the history of how my favourite musical came to be :D
    But is there any chance of digging out some of the cut footage from the archives as well? Around 2:48 in this video is a bit of The Old Gumbie Cat that I'm fairly certain was removed from the final version, for instance. In another interview with Jo Gibb, I remember seeing part of the cut verse of Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer. I'd love to see those in full, if possible :)
