Been to Georgia? If you haven’t, Savannah is a must! It’s my hometown and such a great city. Amazing history and terrific terrific food especially at the local areas
I was born in SE Ohio, My mom and dad were born in WV. My dad had an 8th grade education. He worked in the coal mines during the day and ran moonshine for grandpa at night. I remember many times following grandpa to his still and having a sip even though I was only around 5 or 6.......Been a drinking ever since and that was in the mid 60's. Proud to be a hillbilly that's been an Okie for around 50 years that still drinks moonshine and and lives life to the fullest!
This version is from 2000. This vocal performance is what long time heavy crack use does to your voice. That and being hammered drunk at the same time. Since he's gotten clean and sober his playing and singing are absolutely top notch, like it was back in the early '80's before the crack and booze took over for a couple decades. He's very open about all that in recent public interviews so I'm certainly not making it up.
Having only known the studio version of this song up until now I just want to comment that it is amazing watching how he has changed this up to make it more interesting for himself over the years absolutely awesome
Man I love those percussions. This is how it should be. Many covers with the same tempo feel slow-ish and kind of empty. But here that cymbal play makes a huge difference. It makes the song feel like a fast moving locomotive.
Thats 💘 love and commitment, a true friend... Would love to go to his next show but my 22 yesr old car i dont think it would make it. Its a honda and drives like a batoutahell but dont believe i should take that kind of chance. Omg he looks like my mothers brother mike carter. Steve is my cousin. I realize how important family is now days. Ive lost sooo many family members and now i found out my son Ian is terminally ill. Steve has been thru alote. I love his strength and talent he is really an inspiration to me now that i have grown up. God Bless ✌ to all mostly Love.....
Dang I love the Wire! I know this song and the video but I've never seen this version before. He looks almost unrecognizable from the original video but still familiar to me. Now, thanks to you, it all makes sense. From what I'm reading from these comments Earle had his addictions which makes his role as Bubbles's mentor makes sense. Thanks again!

Holy cow. This is among my favorite songs of all time. However, this live versions sound like he had a clothes pin clamped on his tongue, or he was drunk, or something. Good music but vocals were lacking bad.

I was brought up with Steve Earle's music in the background and I was lucky enough to watch him play in my adulthood, couple years back. Love the guy
All i know that being from Liverpool i can hear my irish mum and grand dad dancing to this bouncing to this in eglash County Tip🎉
A national treasure. Please someone, wrap Steve in bubblewrap so we don't lose him like we have so many this year!
LOVE THIS SONG! THE ENERGY IS SO TRUE TO THE AMERICA WE ALL KNOW!
He's only a nipper, many years left in him.

Everyone knows the draft dodger was a crackhead most of his life...
Growing up in East Tennessee back in the 80s and 90s this Copperhead Rd was kinda like our unofficial theme song lol.
I met this guy multiple times when I was a teenager in Nashville thru random circumstances...I wish I could ask him the questions I have now, then..

Lyrics:
Well my name's John Lee Pettimore
Same as my daddy and his daddy before
You hardly ever saw Grandaddy down here
He only came to town about twice a year
He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line
Everybody knew that he made moonshine
Now the revenue man wanted Grandaddy bad
He headed up the holler with everything he had
It's before my time but I've been told
He never came back from Copperhead Road
Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge
Bought it at an auction at the Mason's Lodge
Johnson County Sheriff painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
Well him and my uncle tore that engine down
I still remember that rumblin' sound
Well the sheriff came around in the middle of the night
Heard mama cryin', knew something wasn't right
He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load
You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road
I volunteered for the Army on my birthday
They draft the white trash first, 'round here anyway
I done two tours of duty in Vietnam
And I came home with a brand new plan
I take the seed from Colombia and Mexico
I plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road
Well the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air
I wake up screaming like I'm back over there
I learned a thing or two from ol' Charlie don't you know
You better stay away from Copperhead Road
