3:25 the average roll when rolling 2 dice and picking the highest is two thirds of whatever the dice are. Also, as you add more dice the average increases to N/N+1 where N equals the number of dice.
I find that the median outcome is much more telling than the average on how it feels to play, since you don't care by how much you beat the DC, only whether you did or not. The median is about 15~ for two d20s.
I've also heard that on average it's roughly the equivalent of adding between +3-4 on the roll. Like, if you can roll a skill check with a skill that's 3 points higher or less, or with advantage, you should go for the skill that lets you roll with advantage, but if the higher skill is 4 points higher or more, then advantage is less worth it. Of course, it'd dependant on how uncertain the roll is, and if you are going for a build that really wants to crit then advantage helps with that

I am not even 3 minutes into the video but I already need to tell you how much I love you for this video because Gnome Bard is my favorite. My first real D&D character was a Rock Gnome Bard and I love/miss him all the time. (okay back to the video and I'm probably going to tell you this same thing tomorrow during the livestream). EDIT: finished the video and now I'm even more antsy for September 6th (when it releases for Mac (and PS5 if I can't fit it on my laptop)). This could be fun to poke at in a livestream series, maybe, though I know the hedgehogs will likely be needed and that's not really super possible in a livestream.
SO in the event this becomes a series you have two types of gnomes in D&D. Well three but we'll focus on the main two from the PHB Rock Gnomes and Forest Gnomes. Forest Gnomes tend more towards magic and you can think of them as a stereotypical woodland spirit type creature. Rock gnomes as you can imagine are less inclined towards forests and magic and are more known for tinkering and crafting like your stereotypical WoW gnomes think dwarf adjacent. Edit: Also Jon True Strike is notoriously bad and here's why. So as you read advantage means you roll twice and take the higher number when you attack next turn. So if you do use Truestrike you wait a turn, roll two, and on success hit with ONE attack. It is always the better option to attack once on your primary turn, and once on your next turn. Because you are still rolling two dice and still taking two turns but now you have twice the opportunities to land an attack. It is one of D&D's more infamous bad spells. Also Githyanki are basically aliens who were enslaved by the Mindflayers. They rebelled and defeated the mindflayers but then suffered a schism. Half wanted to mercilessly hunt down the mindflayers and free other races which was more like under new management they became Githyanki. The other half wanted to chill out a bit and reflect on their newfound freedom by properly rebuilding their society and they became the Githzerai.
I have to say, True Strike isn't one of D&D's bad spells, it is one of 5e's bad spells. In 3e and 3.5 (as well as Pathfinder, which is basically 3.5.2), it gives your next attack +20, which means you are (almost) guaranteed to hit, thus living up to it's name. The 5e version, though? I won't disagree, it is bad.
Not familiar with 5e but wouldn’t it have a use in niche situations? Say, you only have one mega arrow, or the opponent is going to parry and riposte any low roll. It does sound bad 99% of the time though
@@bobafetish1 I would say the only time I can think True Strike may be actually useful would be if your attacks are under some sort of disadvantage (roll two and take the lower) because if you have any combination of an advantage and disadvantage they cancel out. So one could argue that if you burn a True Strike to get a normal attack on the next turn that would be better than two disadvantage attacks. And even then I would preface this is under the assumption you can't use your turn to get rid of disadvantage in some way.
Jon, I fully understand that Baldur’s Gate and Xenoblade aren’t very TH-cam-able and you’re decision not to do full series. At the same time I’m a little disappointed we’ll never get to see you’re live reactions to the two games, particularly to the emotional roller coaster that was Xenoblade 3’s Chapter 5.
I think your analysis of the series makes a lot of sense. As much as I would love to see a play through there are A LOT of small details I'm still learning 15 hours in. The game is so dense so I could see you getting really invested in it's world and it also likes to give players multiple solutions which you love. Here is hoping it comes back one day but for now enjoy the ride John. Just happy you having fun with the game.
Interesting thing about the "what Gnomes are good at" question. In this game, as well as the patched rules for Fifth edition DnD, the answer is, like all races, whatever you want. Generally, races were good mostly because of ability scores: Elves made good Wizards because they got a boost to Intelligence. But now you can put your boosts anywhere, so any race can be a great fit for any class. There are still some things, like Half-Orcs have a "Don't die when you get killed" ability, and a "Do extra damage when you melee crit" both of which makes them good tanky types. But often these aren't as specialized as they seem, for example, almost anyone benefits from the "don't die when you get killed" ability. (Though of course, only people who use melee attacks benefit from the second one). In some cases, it has counter-intuitive results. "Shield Dwarves" (Which are called Mountain Dwarves in the tabletop version) gain training in various weapons and armor, suggesting that they make good warriors. Except, most warrior classes will give you all that training too, making them redundant. The classes that benefit most from that feature are going to be ones who *don't* get those trainings, which means Shield Dwarves make good Wizards, despite the normal tropes. (I'm mixed on the change. On the one hand, I really love less restricted characters. On the other, I feel like messing with the standard tropes isn't necessarily a good thing. Elven Wizards and Dwarven Paladins are classics, and it's weird for the rules to say "You wasted a lot of your racial bonuses doing that." But hey, I have lots of issues with the DnD game design. This isn't the worst idea.)
As someone who watches Critical Role and Dimension 20, as well as your KotOR content (and basically everything else you release), I would LOVE to see you play this more!
By the way, you can press the R stick to toggle your stats and bonuses during dialog cutscenes, so you can always see which roll is most likely to succeed. Hope you enjoy the game as much as I do. I also committed to a Bard play through and it's been a blast so far: On level 5 I already have +8 to +10 bonuses on most CHA related skill checks and can talk my way out of most trouble. Also, in towns and settlements, you can use your instrument to gather crowds and then use your party's thief to pick pocket them while they're listening.
The stand-up maths channel has a great video explaining how good advantage actually is. It doesn’t actually say advantage in the title but is a description of the concept of rolling two dice and taking the highest.
_So within 20 minutes or so, a Gnome makes friends with a Brain before _*_yeeting_*_ several demons into oblivion using the power of thunder._ *This needs to be a series, Jon!*

best of the BG3 playthroughs I've come across so far. I think part of it is watching someone play who doesn't deeply know the DnD universe. It's fun to watch him discover the mechanics and options and have fun with it.
There's so many lovely easter-eggs in this referring to DOS2. I saw a portrait of Fane, the tune Jon played is the theme of Beast, one of the characters, and I found a music box that plays the D:OS2 theme music.
I love that. DOS2 deserves all the credit and love, because there literally wouldn't have been a Baldur's Gate 3 if DOS2 wasn't so cocking impressive of a game.
Advantage in general basically greatly increases your chance of critically succeeding, while decreasing your chance of critically failing. Basically you need to roll a 1 on two d20s to get a natural one (the bad thing), which is a 1/400 chance (0.25%), whereas to critically succeed, you need to roll a 20 on either of two d20s, which I believe increases your chances to about 1 in 10 - 9.75%. The odds of either number on a single die is 1/20, or 5%. In general, with advantage, you are much less likely to fail, while being somewhat more likely to succeed.
I think this might be better suited as a livestream but would love too see more. Also you might need the hedgehog on stand by from what I've seen online 😅.

Speak with animals twice is fine! The Gnome power is once per long rest, and the bard spell is with your spell slots
There is a censorship mode for streams in the game
im so glad you can make your gnomish magical girl idol of your dreams in bg3
I'm gonna add to the chorus of folks asking for a full series of this.
11:41 “Through the sphincter, let’s start exploring!” -a phrase rarely used outside of the gastroenterology department until Baldur’s Gate 3
@@bobafetish1You're not wrong. But that's the copium most of us are on when we pick up TS...
True strike is great for barbarians because they're always out of range.
This would be such a fun livestream, it has stream intergration and we could make his life hell
Full series. This game is so damn good!
I burst out laughing when Jon immediately picked the worst cantrip possible: True strike. Never change Jon, never change.
Vicious Mockery... the bard version of EMOTIONAL DAMAGE
The song played on the lute was a song from Divinity Original Sin 2, Larian's previous game. I'm not sure if all the songs are.
If Jon makes a full series of this it will literally take years for him to complete. I'm here for it lol
I want this both to be a full series and after that a livestream game where Claire gets to decide the plot direction
1:29 welcome to d&d where elves and half elves are just actually just better than everyone else well everyone except thri-kreen
Fell for true strike. Sad days
34:25 in about 99/100 battles Commander Zhalk makes mincemeat out of the mindflayer. Mindflayers *are* terrifying but so are Devil Commanders.
As someone who watches Critical Role and Dimension 20, as well as your KotOR content (and basically everything else you release), I would LOVE to see you play this more!
MAKE THIS A SERIES PLEASE
I pray this will be a series! I want this so bad.
Cool
The best character is one that can talk to everything: animals, undead, mind parasites, and just regular people.
The stand-up maths channel has a great video explaining how good advantage actually is. It doesn’t actually say advantage in the title but is a description of the concept of rolling two dice and taking the highest.
_So within 20 minutes or so, a Gnome makes friends with a Brain before _*_yeeting_*_ several demons into oblivion using the power of thunder._
*This needs to be a series, Jon!*
I wouldn't object to more of this! It'd be quite a long series, but I'm all for it. 😃
Jon immediately saying one of the worst spells in dnd sounds good.
AMAZING! Best video I have seen yet on this game. I have watched a couple of other streamers and have not seen those action wheels at all. Please make a series. It will be so much fun to watch you play this game!
HAHAHA I was NOT expecting a visit from the hedgehog of family friendliness
Jon accidentally stumbles into Kaylee and Dr. Dranzel 7 minutes in. Beautiful
Timestamp? I know who they are but think I missed them in the video 😢
To be honest, as a veteran D&D player, this was both hard to watch, but also hilarious.
that glorious 1-roll sparked up so many memories... "hah, walk in the park!" - game says **slap**
"My brain says this is dangerous, don't touch. But I'm a Gnome, I'm smart enough, I can touch this!"
*Explodes*
:D
Being cocky about a skillcheck requiring just a 2... and then failing it with a natural one is the humor only D&D can give :D
As someone who thoroughly enjoys watching MATN videos and playthroughs of this game, a full series or live stream series would make my day!
I would love to see this game return.
11:41 Everything reminds me off her:
Love it. Part of me wants a series on this, part of me thinks Jon would side quest this to infinity
best of the BG3 playthroughs I've come across so far.
I'd love to see more of this!
This is the best game of the year PLEASE make a series out of this
22:45 They’ve been…thunderstruck!
In general, with advantage, you are much less likely to fail, while being somewhat more likely to succeed.
of COURSE jon is a bard. what else could he possibly be?
I lost it at the "Learning all sorts of things about gnomes"
I can't believe you missed the opportunity to make a pun with the "rock" gnome having an instrument similar to a guitar.
I want to see a full series on this!!
"A newbie playing DnD, this should be fun."
He picks True Strike.
"Oh... Oh no..."
I would love to see a full series. If you think you'd rather play it alone then that'd be better ofcourse :)
This game desperately deserves a series. Not because of the great gameplay or interesting story but because it would teach jon real DnD rules.
This needs a series so bad!
I think this might be better suited as a livestream but would love too see more. Also you might need the hedgehog on stand by from what I've seen online 😅.
I like how Jon is calling the devil Satan because that is REALLY downplaying how strong Satan would be.
