1. True, false, not given one each in solution. 2. no answer/information in para. not given is suggested. 3. never leave blank space. guess and put any answer. useful tips and tricks. very useful. thanks alot teacher.
All the OOE teachers are great, however I think Martin is my most favourite because he has such a sense of humour which makes the lesson even more enjoyable! x
Awesome!! The problem here is that we have to read the whole text, unlike the multiple choice questions where we need to read only the topic sentence and the conclusion to find out about the answer😄 Thanks
Dear Mr Martin, Your lesson is so great. Could you answer the following questions ? 1. Zander can't live in salt water : T/F/NG? 2. Before 1900, there were no zander in the UK : T/F/NG ? I realy need your answer. Thank you very much
Thanks for watching! We do have another lesson on matching headings questions. Have you seen it yet? You can watch it here: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/ielts-reading-matching-headings.
These tips look nice while watching video but when students sit for exam, they lost. Because they totally rely on tips and don't improve their reading power. Reading power is first to improve then these tips work.
I agree 100%. Not enough emphasis is given to the importance of improving language proficiency in general. These tips are great but most learners are led to believe by most "experts" or coaches that there is shortcuts and hacks.
@Oxfort Online English. With the first text it's understendable. But with Y/N/NG i'm begging for differ. Leading exporter yes, but NotGiven. Own by many - yes but NotGiven(T/F/NG). So you've said about the opinion to consider, but you missed yours idea tackeling the second text. I believe so.
Part 5 Question 3 : Wainright's was found in Chicago: I would have done: not given. The text don't say where was it found. You may say that the fact that it's said that Wainrigt is now in Chicago suggest that it was not found in Chicago but the real truth is not given
As the video explains, the word 'now' in the text means that Wainwright's used to be based elsewhere; otherwise, there would be no reason to use the word 'now' in that sentence.
Thanks a ton, Martin, for these awesome tips. I am little unclear at 17:01. Should not we consider "sought" as a (distant) synonym for "own"? Your feedback means a lot to me. Thanks.
Hi Arun. Here, 'sought after' is an adjective phrase that means desired, or in demand. So it cannot be a synonym (or distant synonym) for 'own' because it represents something people don't own yet, but want.
Great tips! How about the following case? Question statement: Thirty percent of deaths in the United States are caused by smoking-related diseases. Relevant part of the passage: Smoking, it is believed, is responsible for 30 per cent of all deaths from cancer and clearly represents the most important preventable cause of cancer in countries like the United States today. What should be the answer? Yes, No, or Not Given.
Sir ,ur way of teaching is amazing, really m very depressed today for my reading, but after watching ur video's,m feel very confident,I assure that m increase my 4,5 ans correct
Hi Martin, I took few tests with these techniques.. it is definitely helping me to gr8 extent, although it is not 100% accurate. For example, the tip "1 True, 1 false, 1 not given one each in section", There were only 3 questions in section 4 (37 - 40), For 2 questions in this section, I found the right answer T and F respectively. Whereas 1 question, I was not sure, so I thought of applying this rule and provided NG, but the correct answer was False. I think, this rule is not applicable for the section which have only 3 questions. I am planning to to some more tests, will try and post if this rule works in section which have more than 3 questions.
Thanks sir. your way of teaching is great. Please make more videos on another types of reading questions. No words for your praise i have one question please tell me the right way of skim and skam. I shall be very thankful to you .Please Crystal clear my these two concepts because there is no other way except oxford online english. I am waiting for your response.
Glad you enjoyed the lesson, Anand. 'Skim' is to read over something very quickly to get the main points. 'Scam' is some kind of fraud involving money. Here are other IELTS reading lessons: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/?s=ielts+reading.
We will try to make more in the future, Krishna. Thanks for watching! We do have another IELTS Reading lesson here: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/ielts-reading-matching-headings.
i could overcome the problem related with heading matching after watching your video sir :) you are really great.Sir please make a Video for listening specially for multiple choice.your teaching style is very good and anyone can understand easily. Please sir.Best wishes for you Sir :)
Very useful. Martins videos are very helpful to do efforts in right direction. If u want to combine hardwork with smart work ,do listen to his videos. Thanks you so much sir for wonderful tips.
Also, I found True/False/Not Given and Yes/No/Not Given are answered with the same criteria. But, I heard from your video that there is a difference with respect to the writer's opinion, which I am unclear about. Could you pleasepick up a good example which separates the way we answer these two types? Thanks a million!
Hi Asif, thanks for the comment! Did you know that we have many other teachers who can help you to prepare for your IELTS exam? You can book a trial lesson here: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/book-first-class
Sometimes another scientist’s opinion is denied by the actual writer of the passage so Question would be T or F; what if we find two contradictory statements within a passage
Hi Manpreet, there will always be one correct answer in a passage. That's why it's important to pay attention to supporting modal verbs, phrasal verbs, and the differences between the facts that are given and speculation. Sometimes, something might seem contradictory, but that is because the test wants you to be able to identify the differences between the listed facts and what the writer 'thinks' or 'speculates' about something. Hope this helps you!
CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME ? in the passage it is :Only 2pagodas have collapsed during PAST 1400years.And the question is :Only 2 pagodas have collapsed IN 1400 years.I think its NO.And thank you so much for the video .It helped me so much.
Wow!! Waw!! Waw!! Good one!! My request to you that; could you add more vedios with different examples. It would help. I got across it easily. Thanks!!
15:48 If it is No, then how would you write the same paragraph knowing that Wainwright's was founded in Chacago, then based in NY for several years and then came back to Chicago again. I would say the same as it is written: "now based in Chacago". So you're assuming that it was founded not in Chicago, but this "now" just means that previous location is not Chicago. But this previous location might not be a place of foundation. It's not enough information and such an assumption is not really correct. So the answer is "Not Given", nothing close to "No".
Thank you for your tips. It helped me to clear a lot of concepts. Sir, I got a question and I am confused here. Can you please clarify it. Text: Many Canadians, on the other hand, will tell you that Canadian English is more like British English. Q: Canadian English is considered more like British English by Canadians. I was thinking the answer will be False as the text says "Many Canadians" and the Question says "Canadians". Sir, please clarify the above question.
I got the answer. After watching your videos again and again. The answer is "TRUE" as the question says "Considered more like"..... Thank you for your videos.
1. True, false, not given one each in solution.
2. no answer/information in para. not given is suggested.
3. never leave blank space. guess and put any answer.
useful tips and tricks. very useful. thanks alot teacher.
very important tips
.. now he said that the answers should be in order but its not like that in cambridge test!! howcome??
Point no. 1: Not always!
if there are only 3 questions ,answers may not be each of true, false, and not given
Pleasr illustrate more how to distinguish between no and not given answers

16:9 I think the answer is (Not given) because the text says (Now based in Chicago) there is no mention where is the company founded.

Part 5
Question 3 :
Wainright's was found in Chicago: I would have done: not given. The text don't say where was it found. You may say that the fact that it's said that Wainrigt is now in Chicago suggest that it was not found in Chicago but the real truth is not given

These tricks were so useful prior to what I’ve been taught before. Thanks❤️
So it cannot be a synonym (or distant synonym) for 'own' because it represents something people don't own yet, but want.
the question about" now based in Chicago" , it is also speculation. The text does not explicitly say it was founded somewhere else.
Nice work for you

Is it only me, who thinks you are the speaker in the listening exams in ielts??
Sir, thanks for your clases .sir, would you please say how the opinion and fact can be used to give answer to yes or no question
Thanx a lot for giving such a great detail
