MJF is such a master heel he can make the crowd even cheer for him.
Many people (including Vince McMahon) don't understand. When fans cheer a heel, it doesn't mean they want him turn face. Rather, this is how they express their gratitude for the great job he's done playing the heel. They're saying "Keep up the great work!"

Damn, I also became a resident of Long Island, New York today lol. I was cheering MJF sitting at my home along with the crowd. The crowd's perception of MJF was incredible. I could sense MJF got somewhat emotional in that stream of cheers he received. It must've felt great for MJF. I am so happy for him.

Man this storyline will be remember after the decades....
Prior to AEW, the closest thing to the 'hometown hero' crowd energy of the old territory days was watching ECW in the 90's... but even then, that was basically a regional mob of wrestling-crazed lunatics who treated the whole promotion like it was something that they owned a stake in.
But this stuff is absolutely magical: heels becoming faces, faces seen as heels, audiences trying to out-do one another with their reactions. You can't really pull this off when you're doing shows in 65 cities a year, but the reliance and return to wrestling strongholds like Chi-town and the Tri-State Area has gone from feeling like it's an example of AEW being small-scale in its reach to being one of the reasons why AEW's connecting with diehard fans. You tap into the nerve of sports-style fandom, and you've got the kind of energy that makes a building like the UBS Arena come off like the Pontiac Silverdome on television.
Hollywood Hogan turned face against The Rock during a ppv when he was suppose to be booed so they had to improvise during the match.
So we’re finally learning from history and paying homage to a classic wrestling storyline, eh? Bret Hart did this in 1997. He was a heel in America and a babyface everywhere else. It was brilliant and made Stone Cold a star. MJF as a hero on Long Island and a villain everywhere else could be really good.
