Anyway, we are finally simpatico in our reaction to a performance -- this was really an awesome and entertaining set of tricks and associated patter. Finally, I do suspect that there was an edit on the 15 card trick -- still, it would fool me regardless.

Exceptionally, this time there was no fraud on the part of TV editors and producers, so I have no reason to publish the principle. As for the 15th card, it was the lucky circumstance that sometimes happens to us and we are happy with it when the selection corresponds to our setting (intuitively, the number 15 between 10 and 20 is more often chosen - try it). It was therefore not necessary to hold the cards in your hand for longer, and the trick could only be performed in accordance with the principles. It didn't surprise me that even the 15th card didn't fool Penn - he knew exactly what "phenomenon" was the cause of success (where it stinks of occultism, the cause is either in TV editing or in a happy coincidence). But what interested me most was how Penn "encodes" the principles into his speech. I must say that this time brilliantly.
I think he really got lucky with the 15. He asks Jonathan, the only one of the three who would not think about it when choosing a number between 10 and 20. A magician on the other hand could have chosen a more extreme number like 11 or 18.
I use to work at Brad Burt's Magic Shop in San Diego many years ago. Richard Turner was a local who would come in to the shop often. He can cut to any number because he really is that good. His touch is so good that he really can feel the number of cards. We must realize that one of Richard's jobs is quality control for the US Playing Card Company. He can tell if the blades which are cutting the cards are getting dull by the feel of the edges. I have never seen him without a deck of cards in his hands. He really is that good. He filmed a teaching video around that time which taught gambling sleights. I knew the crew who filmed it. He had a bottom deal which was so perfect that the only way they could show it in the video was to go outside the house where they were filming to a glass top patio table and film it from underneath. They had to shoot from below through the glass to see the move. That was literally the only angle which showed how it's done.
At 11:30, you've got it. Don't let the whole thing 'crimp' your style, just leave it all up to the tiny plunger. I absolutely love Penn's childlike reaction to this whole act. I'm sure Penn loved feeling like a kid again and is probably a big reason for having this show.
It's a gimmicked deck which allows breaking the deck in any desired place. It's very cleverly designed and the way he incorporated the plunger, framed and executed it is amazing.

I'm pretty sure I heard Richard Turner mentioning his fingertips are so sensitive that he can tell the difference in width, even if it's the difference between eg 27 and 28 cards. In a showcase he did, a card from his deck fell off the table. He noticed there was something wrong immediately and asked the audience if it really was a full deck of cards. He noticed it before the people around him noticed.
Just saw Jon and actually got to participate in part of his show. Class act, fast hands, and extremely personable. So glad to have gotten the opportunity to meet him.
Jason, I'm pretty sure when Richard Turner cuts to any named number of cards, he's actually just doing what he says haha. He's likely one of the only people on the planet who can literally feel how many cards he's cutting.

Yup, seems weird he left the card prediction out, I guess he thought he wouldn't be able to get marked cards by Penn and Teller. I also think Teller had already seen his performances as sticking the plunger to participant's forehead was already part of his routine before he went on Fool Us.
What I liked most about this performance is that is very casual. It reminds me of people that operate very fast in their lives and try to force things to happen. They only have a surface level vision of their lives, which adds a lot of tension in their lives. But problems don't happen in a vacuum and sometimes things happen before we know it. I hope Jason can understand the code I used.
Re: The Richard Turner trick, I spoke with him once and the secret is he's just that good. There's no trick. He has a phenomenal sense of touch and cultivated it to the point where he could accurately pick up any number of cards from the deck. Or to put it like Penn would, it's juggling not magic.
I saw Jon Armstrong on the Disney cruise for a show once and let me tell you he was AMAZING. He brought his tiny plunger too so no there was no footage cut out

There's one bent card thats always at the bottom of the deck. So when he cuts the deck and puts it back together that bent card is always placed on top of the selected card. Because of the suction, it always seperates at the selected card. That's why at the beginning of the act he only hands Penn the top half of the deck to "check"

I'm not convinced that the plunger seeing the card, and then re-picking the card was changing the act!! Because the second card picked was picked from his hands, not off the table. If Penn hadn't mentioned it, I think it would have been mentioned by the magician!! I could be wrong, but I can't help but wondering if it was planned!!
It makes absolutely no difference which card. It could have been a card from another deck. Teller could have opened a fresh deck and given him the card and he could have found that with the plunger. I know how this trick is done. The code word is "breather" but let's just say that there is science to this. The plunger really is doing the work. There is no sleight of hand here.
5:33 you can see a line in the pack where its about to separate, same at 7:20. That's all I got lol He could have a card that has a porous surface to reduce the suction effect, but that doesn't expain how he knows where to place it with the 15 cards. However he does it, what a great presentation!
He had the 'break card' ready at the midpoint between "10" and "20" i.e. 15 and would have added or removed two or three cards as required had Johnathan said anything else.

@@Speedytrip Watch his other performances of the same trick, he does move cards to the top or take them off when the participant chooses a number other than 15. Mark is right, 15 is the perfect place to pre-position the breather card. He got extra lucky that Jonathan chose that number as he then didn't have to do anything and the trick looked perfect.
I think the fable has to do with the futility of false idols. We glorify other people and extraordinary outcomes, when we already possess the ability to become extraordinary ourselves. As Frankenfurter sings in the Rocky Horror Picture Show: "Don't dream it, be it."
I was completely fine with Richard Turner's explanation that after decades of using his fingers to see the deck, he can cut any number by feel, in a heartbeat, one handed. I mean, he demonstrates it so cleanly and fairly. But then this guy comes along and cuts 15 cards with a plunger. Yeah... I don't know how he did that.

Regarding the Aesop's Fable: Might be a little past the original point of the story, but it reminded me of situations where you, for example, ask nicely for someone to do something time and time again and they just... don't. But then when you get angry at them for not doing anything _that's_ when they get to work, and you might react very much like the man in the fable.
I’d say deck has been modified Cards can be buckled one way, or the other (roll a heavy large smooth ball on every card stacked, focusing on the centre and continually shuffle) Take a card. buckle deck other way. Card goes back and air seal is broken at selected card plunger is pushed onto cards and ‘pops’ card to suck to card above and releases remaining deck underneath. (Cards Would need to be in the correct direction ‘buckle’ otherwise it would drop chosen card and it would be on the remaining stack, would be good variation of the trick) Just my thoughts during the video...
@@sbaxter4207 The breather card was already in the 15 position. He asks the participant to pick a number between 10 and 20, and the 15 position would be easiest to manage other numbers. If the participant selects 18, he adds 3 cards to the top. If they select 12, he takes 3 cards off. Much easier than having it at, say, 20 and then having to pull 9 cards off if they choose 11. In this case he just got extra lucky that Jonathan Ross chose 15. If you watch his other performances of the same trick on TH-cam you can see that he continues to handle the deck and move cards around after the participant chooses a number.
I am thinking it would be simpler than that. I don’t have a miniature plunger to test it out, you could probably just put a small crimp in the card and it would cut right above that card. Then you slip the crimped card to the bottom of the deck while resetting it so that the old crimp is always below where the next cut occurs. For the fifteen, I do think it was a bit of editing that we just missed the moment where he crimped the card, he was manipulating the cards as he asked and would just need a small window to crimp a card.
@@88porpoise There was no editing for the 15. He puts the deck down immediately after Jonathan Ross calls it, without changing the order of the cards in any way. However, as I said in my previous comment, the card was most likely already in the right position and he got extra lucky by Ross calling the exact number.
I used to be a very keen amatear magician and even did a magic show in Gibraltar once while I lived there, the other day I removed my magic case from the loft, tonight I got round to having a look what I had and inside amongst other things was about a dozen mini plungers! I’m sure I bought them in bulk from eBay to do this trick but after playing around with it I never did perform it.i bet u can still get them as they make good phone kickstands.
Aesop: The lesson here is that doing nothing, praying for a gawd to give you what you want, will never give you success. Only through *action* does one succeed.
On another note Jason mentioned. I think that I have heard that Richard Turner actually did it. He really did train himself to cut to any position. I understand he could only do it reliably if the deck was barely used.
when the card is put back in the deck, the deck could have been turned 180 degrees so the selected cards magnet polarity was flipped compared to its neighbour. But how did he get to the 15th position selection!? That was amazing.
Regarding adapting the routing to Penns remark: Let's be honest here. Big part of a good magic show is good showmanship. First to distract the audience from seeing your foolery and second it's entertainmen. Just doing a mechanic routine will never be as much fun as interaction, jokes and improvisation
Loved the trick, the fable, and all the comments by you and your viewers about the fable. I was struck by the fact that when the man destroyed the idol and found the gold, he immediately started speaking to his god again, even if only to accuse his god of being a fraud. There may be a message about the fickleness of belief hidden in their somewhere.
The only thing I spotted is that the first time (Penn) it was the next card of the remaining stack, but the second time (Teller) it was the last card of the removed stack. And both times he knew which one to turn right away. But I don't even know if that is revealing anything, or just coincidence.
my guess is that the cards have enough suction between each other to lift the entire deck, if you pull on it like that, which you can't really do without such a plunger... and for the cuts to a specific card, he might sneak in a speck of dirt or something, to upset the adherence just enough...
If you pause it everytime he makes the 🪠 cut the deck u'll notice the top card is bent a lil in the corner. He's just so good in placing that card and manipulating it to go under the selected cards.

I’m with you. It also took my breath when he said it. I also thought magnets up front. I liked your rubber band trick and liked the way you presented it. I would take the reveal to show the camera is a different angle; then that when you would show a layman.

I've seen Jon at the Magic Castle a bunch (and got pulled up to assist him twice... maybe it's my dumb-looking face?) I love his personality and patter (especially with the drunk idiots he can rag on!) And, fun fact if you're an Arrested Development fan, Jon is in the photo of "The Alliance of Magicians" that Gob is in (and gets expelled from). Also, the plunger is still one of the tricks that fools me. I always enjoy seeing it! (ETA: I remember now the Penn explains it... but maybe I just want to forget because I just love it each time!)

I had to do a double take and slow down. When Johnathan was counting out the 15 cards, almost looked like it was the 3 of Clubs as the bottom card in his hand, but it was 3 of Spades when I slowed it down.
I think I know how this trick works. One card is non-porous, and the other cards are porous. Also, one side of the non-porous card can stick on a porous card. So, put the non-porous card above the chosen card. The plunger will pick up the pile of cards above the non-porous card, the non-porous card and the card (chosen card) beneath the non-porous card that sticks on the non-porous card. Now the million-dollar question: how does Jon pick up a pile of fifteen cards? The secret: sleight of hand. He puts the non-porous card between the fifteenth card and the fourteenth card. Lots of professional card gamblers and card dealers are able to memorise and count cards in a pile of cards. I think lots of card magicians have these skills as well. The moral of the Aesop's fable reminds me of the story of the lottery player and his grandson. The lottery player has never thrown away his horseshoe, because the horseshoe will bring him luck with the lottery. The lottery player has never won a lottery Jackpot in many, many years- with his lucky horseshoe. Then his grandson has accidentally thrown away the horseshoe. The lottery player and his grandson are having a big fight. After that the lottery player and his grandson have never seen each other again (because of the fight). Guess what? Without the horsehoe the lottery player won two times a lottery Jackpot.
There is definitely a video cut just before the 15 cards "lift". Nobody of the 3 had to received any cards on the hands and Jonatan usually has his hands between the legs. From the movement you see before the cut, he was about to put the hands between the legs again and without any command from the magician, there is the cut and Jonatan's hands there ready to receive the cards. That time could be used to count to 15 before putting the deck on the table. On the table, on the deck, you can clearly see the 15 cards. As for how? I am not a magician but maybe spoiler warning here: If you drill a little hole(s) l the deck at the same position on each card, let's say center in the width and 1/4 of height for example, you can put the plunger over them and it sucks nothing up. When a card i chosen, all you need to do, it put it in the deck rotated 180°. When you now press the plunger over the holes, you will press all cards against each others but you will have a "bottom plug" with the chosen card creating a vacuum between the plunger and the chosen card.
I'm glad I saw your Blaine reaction before they struck it down. It's the only way I would have watched it. Blatant misdirection is the name of the game for the plunger, and it worked well. I think surface tension was a good answer and card bending... whatever that's magically called. The card stack may have had a slight bend one way, but before the card was put back in, he bent the deck the other way causing a tiny air gap at the chosen card. It's a break, a place holder. If I keep watching this channel, I'm going to become amagical! Aesop: Can certainly be applied to all religion and personal experiences thereof. Just like you mentioned, it's all about that map and how they find their way back to something they believe caused their fault (It's never our fault, right?). This could be said about why diets, exercise, dates, jobs, et cetera, fail in a short time.
Yes, this is 2 years later... but, I think he actually did a force on Teller. The first time, Teller had a definite free choice, picking any card from the spread. The second time, however, he did not put a spread on the table, so I'm guessing he forced the card. Still, how did he force Penn to intervene? That was just luck; if Penn hadn't mentioned that the plunger could see the card, he'd probably have "noticed" it himself and done the same thing. On the other hand, if the audience or the spectator really goes with the flow and they point it out themselves, that's even better.

I'm not convinced that the plunger seeing the card, and then re-picking the card was changing the act!! Because the second card picked was picked from his hands, not off the table. If Penn hadn't mentioned it, I think it would have been mentioned by the magician!! I could be wrong, but I can't help but wondering if it was planned!!
It makes absolutely no difference which card. It could have been a card from another deck. Teller could have opened a fresh deck and given him the card and he could have found that with the plunger.
I know how this trick is done. The code word is "breather" but let's just say that there is science to this. The plunger really is doing the work. There is no sleight of hand here.

He could have a card that has a porous surface to reduce the suction effect, but that doesn't expain how he knows where to place it with the 15 cards. However he does it, what a great presentation!
He had the 'break card' ready at the midpoint between "10" and "20" i.e. 15 and would have added or removed two or three cards as required had Johnathan said anything else.
@@MarkLucasProductions Yeah the editing doesn't let us see the card manipulation. At the same time had he added or removed a number of cards it would have needed to be insanely fast for him not to get busted.
@@Speedytrip Watch his other performances of the same trick, he does move cards to the top or take them off when the participant chooses a number other than 15. Mark is right, 15 is the perfect place to pre-position the breather card. He got extra lucky that Jonathan chose that number as he then didn't have to do anything and the trick looked perfect.

I was completely fine with Richard Turner's explanation that after decades of using his fingers to see the deck, he can cut any number by feel, in a heartbeat, one handed. I mean, he demonstrates it so cleanly and fairly. But then this guy comes along and cuts 15 cards with a plunger. Yeah... I don't know how he did that.

5:32 You can see a crease on the side of the deck and it was cut to it if you watch frame by frame. 7:22 It's also interesting how that king popped out slowly from the bottom on it's own
but he said 15 BEFORE the crease was there so that doesn't explain it

Regarding the Aesop's Fable: Might be a little past the original point of the story, but it reminded me of situations where you, for example, ask nicely for someone to do something time and time again and they just... don't. But then when you get angry at them for not doing anything _that's_ when they get to work, and you might react very much like the man in the fable.

I’d say deck has been modified
Cards can be buckled one way, or the other (roll a heavy large smooth ball on every card stacked, focusing on the centre and continually shuffle)
Take a card.
buckle deck other way.
Card goes back and air seal is broken at selected card
plunger is pushed onto cards and ‘pops’ card to suck to card above and releases remaining deck underneath. (Cards Would need to be in the correct direction ‘buckle’ otherwise it would drop chosen card and it would be on the remaining stack, would be good variation of the trick)

What about when he said pick a number , was 15 or 16? Tiny Plunger knew what to do there too!
@@sbaxter4207 The breather card was already in the 15 position. He asks the participant to pick a number between 10 and 20, and the 15 position would be easiest to manage other numbers. If the participant selects 18, he adds 3 cards to the top. If they select 12, he takes 3 cards off. Much easier than having it at, say, 20 and then having to pull 9 cards off if they choose 11. In this case he just got extra lucky that Jonathan Ross chose 15. If you watch his other performances of the same trick on TH-cam you can see that he continues to handle the deck and move cards around after the participant chooses a number.
I am thinking it would be simpler than that. I don’t have a miniature plunger to test it out, you could probably just put a small crimp in the card and it would cut right above that card. Then you slip the crimped card to the bottom of the deck while resetting it so that the old crimp is always below where the next cut occurs.
For the fifteen, I do think it was a bit of editing that we just missed the moment where he crimped the card, he was manipulating the cards as he asked and would just need a small window to crimp a card.
@@88porpoise There was no editing for the 15. He puts the deck down immediately after Jonathan Ross calls it, without changing the order of the cards in any way. However, as I said in my previous comment, the card was most likely already in the right position and he got extra lucky by Ross calling the exact number.

I used to be a very keen amatear magician and even did a magic show in Gibraltar once while I lived there, the other day I removed my magic case from the loft, tonight I got round to having a look what I had and inside amongst other things was about a dozen mini plungers! I’m sure I bought them in bulk from eBay to do this trick but after playing around with it I never did perform it.i bet u can still get them as they make good phone kickstands.
Aesop: The lesson here is that doing nothing, praying for a gawd to give you what you want, will never give you success. Only through *action* does one succeed.

On another note Jason mentioned. I think that I have heard that Richard Turner actually did it. He really did train himself to cut to any position. I understand he could only do it reliably if the deck was barely used.

when the card is put back in the deck, the deck could have been turned 180 degrees so the selected cards magnet polarity was flipped compared to its neighbour. But how did he get to the 15th position selection!? That was amazing.

Regarding adapting the routing to Penns remark:
Let's be honest here. Big part of a good magic show is good showmanship. First to distract the audience from seeing your foolery and second it's entertainmen. Just doing a mechanic routine will never be as much fun as interaction, jokes and improvisation
Loved the trick, the fable, and all the comments by you and your viewers about the fable. I was struck by the fact that when the man destroyed the idol and found the gold, he immediately started speaking to his god again, even if only to accuse his god of being a fraud. There may be a message about the fickleness of belief hidden in their somewhere.
Idc if this trick is easy to do or hard, it's hilarious and it's awesome, one of my favourites on Fool Us I've seen

The only thing I spotted is that the first time (Penn) it was the next card of the remaining stack, but the second time (Teller) it was the last card of the removed stack. And both times he knew which one to turn right away. But I don't even know if that is revealing anything, or just coincidence.
my guess is that the cards have enough suction between each other to lift the entire deck, if you pull on it like that, which you can't really do without such a plunger... and for the cuts to a specific card, he might sneak in a speck of dirt or something, to upset the adherence just enough...
If you pause it everytime he makes the 🪠 cut the deck u'll notice the top card is bent a lil in the corner. He's just so good in placing that card and manipulating it to go under the selected cards.
I do this trick, it’s so simple but boy does it fool everyone.

I've seen Jon at the Magic Castle a bunch (and got pulled up to assist him twice... maybe it's my dumb-looking face?) I love his personality and patter (especially with the drunk idiots he can rag on!)
And, fun fact if you're an Arrested Development fan, Jon is in the photo of "The Alliance of Magicians" that Gob is in (and gets expelled from).
Also, the plunger is still one of the tricks that fools me. I always enjoy seeing it! (ETA: I remember now the Penn explains it... but maybe I just want to forget because I just love it each time!)

I had to do a double take and slow down. When Johnathan was counting out the 15 cards, almost looked like it was the 3 of Clubs as the bottom card in his hand, but it was 3 of Spades when I slowed it down.
I think I know how this trick works. One card is non-porous, and the other cards are porous. Also, one side of the non-porous card can stick on a porous card.
So, put the non-porous card above the chosen card. The plunger will pick up the pile of cards above the non-porous card, the non-porous card and the card (chosen card) beneath the non-porous card that sticks on the non-porous card.
Now the million-dollar question: how does Jon pick up a pile of fifteen cards? The secret: sleight of hand. He puts the non-porous card between the fifteenth card and the fourteenth card. Lots of professional card gamblers and card dealers are able to memorise and count cards in a pile of cards. I think lots of card magicians have these skills as well.
The moral of the Aesop's fable reminds me of the story of the lottery player and his grandson. The lottery player has never thrown away his
horseshoe, because the
horseshoe will bring him luck with the lottery. The lottery player has never won a lottery Jackpot in many, many years- with his lucky horseshoe. Then his grandson has accidentally thrown away the horseshoe. The lottery player and his grandson are having a big fight. After that the lottery player and his grandson have never seen each other again (because of the fight). Guess what? Without the horsehoe the lottery player won two times a lottery Jackpot.
There is definitely a video cut just before the 15 cards "lift". Nobody of the 3 had to received any cards on the hands and Jonatan usually has his hands between the legs. From the movement you see before the cut, he was about to put the hands between the legs again and without any command from the magician, there is the cut and Jonatan's hands there ready to receive the cards.
That time could be used to count to 15 before putting the deck on the table. On the table, on the deck, you can clearly see the 15 cards. As for how? I am not a magician but maybe spoiler warning here: If you drill a little hole(s) l the deck at the same position on each card, let's say center in the width and 1/4 of height for example, you can put the plunger over them and it sucks nothing up. When a card i chosen, all you need to do, it put it in the deck rotated 180°. When you now press the plunger over the holes, you will press all cards against each others but you will have a "bottom plug" with the chosen card creating a vacuum between the plunger and the chosen card.
I'm glad I saw your Blaine reaction before they struck it down. It's the only way I would have watched it.
Blatant misdirection is the name of the game for the plunger, and it worked well. I think surface tension was a good answer and card bending... whatever that's magically called. The card stack may have had a slight bend one way, but before the card was put back in, he bent the deck the other way causing a tiny air gap at the chosen card. It's a break, a place holder. If I keep watching this channel, I'm going to become amagical!
Aesop: Can certainly be applied to all religion and personal experiences thereof. Just like you mentioned, it's all about that map and how they find their way back to something they believe caused their fault (It's never our fault, right?). This could be said about why diets, exercise, dates, jobs, et cetera, fail in a short time.

Yes, this is 2 years later... but, I think he actually did a force on Teller. The first time, Teller had a definite free choice, picking any card from the spread. The second time, however, he did not put a spread on the table, so I'm guessing he forced the card.
Still, how did he force Penn to intervene? That was just luck; if Penn hadn't mentioned that the plunger could see the card, he'd probably have "noticed" it himself and done the same thing. On the other hand, if the audience or the spectator really goes with the flow and they point it out themselves, that's even better.
