The 2 problems that plague Janet atm is her low damage for being a Marksman in her class, you really can just tank a lot of her shots before she gets run over, and second is that her attack takes too long to scope further without her starpower which speeds it up by 33%, making it a necessity if you want to apply more damage and pressure
1. A zoner with damage might be a bad recipe to play against, specifically if they're as good as Janet. Janet doesn't compete with Brawlers in her class, and I shoukd have been more clear with this - the comparison between her and Piper was largely based on how likely their strengths would appeal to the general public, but Janet has strengths that Piper doesn't have. She doesn't compete with Piper, she competes in a separate bracket. Maybe more damage might be good, but I'd rather they do something else, maybe increasing her health to be more unique among those marksmen. 2. Not necessarily a problem, just an in-built flaw to compensate for the strength of the attack. Could be a problem if the increase starpower is too strong, but the other starpower isn't too strong, so maybe that's why. Maybe that could be tuned, but I'd rather balance a brawler around embellishing strengths than covering weaknesses.

That's the thing tho, unlike most other marksman, Janet does not get ran over, she has many tools to completely escape danger, her super, which is the best escaping tool in the entire game, even passing Mico's super because Janet activates it instantly without the danger of it being cancelled by stun moves and her super charges relatively fast.
You see, I would also play her, but MAN the voicelines... Not to hate on the voice actor, they did a great job, but playing with janet for me it's the equivalent of putting earrape as background music.

Yes Janet was released with the idea that she can be played in pretty much any matchup or game mode, but first we should remove Heist from this statement… She was decent at best in it when she was an S tier brawler and now it’s just unplayable xd. The Drop the Base gadget is also gets the job done at withering down low HP brawler from a distance. I could punish Piper, Jessie, Crows and other ranged brawlers with Janet. My main problem with Janet is that sometimes her support aspect isn’t the best as I would rather use Byron for supporting my teammates and withering down opponents. However, i go with janet more because she can take a punch and I love the aggressive side of her.
it does suck how the meta has become more aggressive due to hypercharge yet she got no tools to help with that. I feel like she's stuck in this loop of "super should be an anti-aggro escape button but not toooo much of an escape button otherwise she becomes hard to deal with". hopefully a hypercharge can fix that, though

Loved the video as usual i'm expecially liking the exploration of underutilised and often underated brawler (from the playerbase, the pros know what they are doing) and i always liked the consistent style of brawlers like janet, honestly when i get to the end screen with a 0 on my deathcount i feel very satisfied even if i'm not the star player because it means the you played well (usually)
One thing I would like to say, I don't see Janet as a marksman. Yes she does have the kit of one but the way he is played, I don't see her the same way as belle/Mandy/piper are. If anything, she is closer to brawlers like Lou, Lola and eve, who are meant to be brawlers specialist in DMG at midrange. Edit: I would like to suggest another class separate from marksman, brawlers with long range DMG potential. This is cuz maize, eve and gray, even if they have long range can't deal witlong range DMG dealers but are better at any mid ranger DMG guys. Yeas they will be ok with a marksman but they aren't in a advantage against them

I feel like Janet needs a slight rework she’s basically unusable without the first star power and should come standard . Also since her specialty is zoning maybe decrease her reload speed by a bit. Her damage isn’t great and the fact you need to wind up her attack just makes you feel like you’re ticking the opponent.
They could integrate the 2nd Star Power onto her base kit with half the effectiveness and replace it with something like a star power that increases her attack damage slightly the more enemies she pierces with it, and make her 1st SP more useful to also detect invisible enemies aswell as a direct counter play to leon, sandy, and kit
decrease reload speed or time? speed decrease is a nerf, time decrease is a buff. though, reload time buff would be interesting though, letting her zone better
I meant the the second one but they should honestly just keep the full 30% and give her a brand new star power. I don’t think it’s necessary to gut the star power to 30% Janet is used for utility not really dps . I don’t think it would make her broken. And decrease her reload speed by maybe 0.1 seconds that might be a lot tho. They should maybe buff her first star power to reveal for a little longer and the second one could either be a toned down version of her mutation to make her hits targets more consistently.

I agree pretty much with everything u said, but i dont think u elaborated enough in the "pushing back" aspect. Janet is, like u said, good in pushing back enemies slowly, forcing them into bad positions. This works in most game modes, but is VERY macro oriented which most folks dont particularly care about especially in a fast-paced game like brawlstars. Janets main advantage against other pressure appliers is her versatility, mid tankyness and escape tools. Pierce also happens to be extremely useful in pushing, since more brawlers into one spot doesnt mean she ll be as threatened like other brawlers who share a similar role. However, these so called "advantages" assume u already know how to zone/is zoning ur enemies, rather than making it easier, like crows poison. Here i need to mention buzz. Buzzs trait teaches players how to zone their enemies just by playing him. Janets kit assumes u already know everything of what ure doing. Janets main problem is that her role is often not recognized, most players dont even know it exists, and in the end it isnt particularly easy to learn or execute.
Maybe because she went from being a S tier to F or D tier brawler and not getting a damage buff or hypercharge that other brawlers like belle, piper, Mandy, Nani, colt and Brock… Edit: I didn’t finish the video but I liked how you classify Janet as a defensive generalist who is best at zoning
Janet is another example that I like to bring up whenever people discuss how "brawlers weak on release never recover on player rates". Both Ruffs and Janet were very strong on release and stayed like that for quite a while, yet their playrates were never that crazy and absolutely dropped once they were nerfed (or slightly nerfed, in Ruffs case) because, since they are boring and not crazy strong anymore, why continue playing them? Brawlers like Otis never recovered from their lowest point because they are just plain and boring, if not just tolerable to play, it's not because they are weak, they are BORING to the average player. Colette recovered from her lowest point despite being, arguably, the worst brawler in the history of the game on release, yet supercell won't talk about that. As for Janet, I understand why people don't like playing her. I personally find enjoyment in most brawlers in the game, I love Ruffs and Eve and I enjoy Lou and Otis all in all, but Janet, while tolerable, is a brawler that I generally try to avoid. She can do a lot of stuff but none are particularly rewarding, her gameplay is slow but unlike Eve or Ruffs there's never a moment where your efforts show big results (like pushing the enemy team back with your hatchling army or having all your team buffed and dealing high damage). Her controller aspect is unmatched, but there really isn't a moment when I play her and I'm not thinking "dang, I could be playing another brawler". Love your videos btw, as someone who thinks a lot about the game's balance and how the casual and competitive playerbases interact with it, it was like finding a hidden gem.

Her gadgets are just escape tools or for control, and once again, her star power that increases speed is the only one of her add-ons that make her more fun to play
ruffs: got nerfed in a way that made him unfun to play - release ruffs and ruffs now are quite different brawlers. they're not really comparable and have different playstyles. janet: she was strong, but she was also clunky and due to her zoner role, performs better on organized teams. this is why they waited so long to nerf her - she was strong in organized team play, but not very strong on ladder. this is a case like byron's - once they fell off competitive, they would fall off casual play as well, but they were never played there to begin with. because of this, i wouldn't say weak releases are the sole reason why these brawlers don't recover, but it's always better to maximize retention than risk lowering it, which is why I mentioned it thanks so much! we're happy to have you
another point is that her super just isnt that good and might actually hinder you when playing gamemodes like brawl ball, heist and hotzone...it just isnt that practical and doesn't guarantee value even when used correctly
Imo the reason she is super unpopular rn are her undertuned numbers. Back when she was released she was an S-tier Brawler for a very long time and even after a bunch of nerfs she still was fluctuating between A and S-tier. But somewhere in June 2023 (I think it happened around that time) the dev team decided she was meta for too long and basically killed her and she never got any significant buffs again. I really miss Janet meta, one of the Brawlers who despite being meta wasn't broken to deal with (at least after her first bunch of nerfs after release)
I was thinking on picking up Janet once I get to ublock her, the few gameplay I've seen and played felt fun. I'm thinking in more about it (but I still have the op brawlers to max first), the tactical gameplay is fun to me as well. And also, amazing video, I love these documentary style, of any game. I played them a little bit of Janet during mutations. Duels was fun cause you play Stu first, either win or die, and go into Janet with a free super, bombing the opponent a bunch and landing for a free kill

This is the problem with brawlers that are a “jack of all trades”. They’re amazing if they’re really good, but if they aren’t they’re really bad. almost no in between. She doesn’t have a specific mode she’s best or worst in, so other brawlers outclass her in every mode because she’s just in the middle

Tbh most people say that Janet is a boring brawler who’s straight up trash. Personally I find Janet fun because I used to main crow, spike, surge, all these high dmg brawlers than can just obliterate like 30 franks in 2 seconds. But that’s pretty much it, it’s just button mashing. Janet is a slower pace brawler, personally I like to play because she’s highly defensive and in the current meta.(frank meg and lily) she out ranges all of them similar to snipers. She also has two very very good gadgets. But that’s just my opinion. There’s brawlers like Gray and Byron who are also versatile and fun.
This is the only brawler that is somehow Boring and Shit. Her mechanic is awkward, her super is gimmicky and weird to use, and her gadgets are just mid.
Why peapole hate Janet? I find her very fun to play. She might not be the best brawler but she is so fun. Hopefully soon Janet gets a rework to be a little bit better
I main Janet. I find generalists to be really fun, and i find her kit interesting. My winrate with her has got to be at least 85%, but I couldn’t tell you why. This is a really good analysis, and i think she could become used again with some tweaking.
brock can zone chokepoints like the one in kaboom canyon's side lane, but he struggles in open space due to both slow projectile and burning only where the rocket explodes. mandy is much more consistent, because her pressure range extends well beyond any other character's in the game. that's the thing - you aren't competing with the other marksmen, leaving you free to be useful in other ways. If Janet had a 10-tile range, she would have to then be balanced around being better or worse than certain marksmen at certain things. This promotes marksman sameness syndrome (something I will talk about later for sure) and reduces the creativity that the devs can have on characters. Janet's more interesting because she doesn't have a 10-tile range, leaving her free to allocate resources in another area of her kit. It's like how removing the Hypercharge Unleashed event (which didn't bring much player retention) opened up room for newer, more exciting events (like Godzilla) to be introduced, that would make the game more interesting while also not wrecking the economy.
Isn't it always better to pick a brawler who specializes in the gamemode you're in over Janet? I feel like that's the main disadvantage of being a generalist
Realistically speaking a big problem is randoms, for example I prefer using brawlers like nita and piper because they are brawlers that can carry if my teammates are trash. Using brawlers like Janet makes you rely on randoms more
As an old player who just returned to the game and got Janet recently, I say that her playstyle feels very clunky. It gives me the awkward feeling of playing the old Mortis without the long dash update or maybe even worse. I mean compared to other marksmen such as Piper and Bea, unlike them, her basic attacks take time to focus but the range and damage is mid. Her ultimate is unique but it lacks the freedom to properly bombard the opponent since it takes accurate timing and precision to match your flight to the opponent’s movement or else you won’t be able to maximize the damage. What’s worse is that her gadgets and star powers are just designed to fix her kit, they do not give her any remarkable features or any significant additions to her playstyle.
I like the format of your video, but calling Janet "marksman" and comparing her to actual snipers is a mistake imo. She fits much better role as "Controller" as zoning and checking bushes is her speciality. She literally gets outranged by actual snipers and cannot be used to "snipe out" specific targets. Supercell messed up brawler classes once again and now people perceive those brawlers in a wrong way...
janet's definitely a marksman - marksmen have the capability to duel at long ranges, that makes sense for janet. the difference is how she goes about dueling at those long ranges - controlling, which is why her secondary typing is as a controller. this isn't a case of supercell messing up brawler classes, this is a case of them not providing dual hybrid classes for brawlers that need it. janet's not effective as a pure controller, there are better brawlers for that, that are more mechanically suited to assume more of a control role. janet's your pick whenever you want a brawler that can consistently duel at long ranges, but also has the secondary ability to control, just to handle different matchups.

And how is that Janet is a not a controller if the role of a controller is exactly at zoning? Again, with the same logic, would you pick Janet against Nani and Piper on shooting star? Probably not, since Piper and Nani are just better snipers and you will just go R-T. My point is - how will classification of Janet as marksman will help you in draft if you will still not use Janet for that? Classification should not be based off just one stat - classification should make your matchup choices as effective as possible and in this case Supercell messed up.

I'ma be real. I've rarely encountered a Janet in a game but Bot-controlled or not, her super is stupidly easy to kite (just move in circles and no damage lmao)
you'd think that, but it's exactly what you said. you move in very predictable circles, making it very easy for their teammate to shoot you down. it's like lou - you'd think spinning while in his super would just make yourself unaffected by the super, but you're moving in a straight line which is exactly what the lou player wants. although i will admit, it's harder for janet to pull off because her style of pressure requires her to not be able to exert her own pressure (though this is made up for by near global range, so you can kill the enemy in your lane and then help your mid teammate kill their mid teammate really easily

Also Janet being called a Marksman sounds Soo odd to me since I always saw her in the same league as Lou, Lola and Eve and not someone like piper and Brock. I feel like Janet needs a slight rework she’s basically unusable without the first star power and should come standard . Also since her specialty is zoning maybe decrease her reload speed by a bit. Her damage isn’t great and the fact you need to wind up her attack just makes you feel like you’re ticking the opponent.

They could integrate the 2nd Star Power onto her base kit with half the effectiveness and replace it with something like a star power that increases her attack damage slightly the more enemies she pierces with it, and make her 1st SP more useful to also detect invisible enemies aswell as a direct counter play to leon, sandy, and kit

I meant the the second one but they should honestly just keep the full 30% and give her a brand new star power. I don’t think it’s necessary to gut the star power to 30% Janet is used for utility not really dps . I don’t think it would make her broken. And decrease her reload speed by maybe 0.1 seconds that might be a lot tho. They should maybe buff her first star power to reveal for a little longer and the second one could either be a toned down version of her mutation to make her hits targets more consistently.

I agree pretty much with everything u said, but i dont think u elaborated enough in the "pushing back" aspect.
Janet is, like u said, good in pushing back enemies slowly, forcing them into bad positions. This works in most game modes, but is VERY macro oriented which most folks dont particularly care about especially in a fast-paced game like brawlstars.
Janets main advantage against other pressure appliers is her versatility, mid tankyness and escape tools. Pierce also happens to be extremely useful in pushing, since more brawlers into one spot doesnt mean she ll be as threatened like other brawlers who share a similar role.
However, these so called "advantages" assume u already know how to zone/is zoning ur enemies, rather than making it easier, like crows poison.
Here i need to mention buzz. Buzzs trait teaches players how to zone their enemies just by playing him. Janets kit assumes u already know everything of what ure doing.
Janets main problem is that her role is often not recognized, most players dont even know it exists, and in the end it isnt particularly easy to learn or execute.

Janet is another example that I like to bring up whenever people discuss how "brawlers weak on release never recover on player rates". Both Ruffs and Janet were very strong on release and stayed like that for quite a while, yet their playrates were never that crazy and absolutely dropped once they were nerfed (or slightly nerfed, in Ruffs case) because, since they are boring and not crazy strong anymore, why continue playing them? Brawlers like Otis never recovered from their lowest point because they are just plain and boring, if not just tolerable to play, it's not because they are weak, they are BORING to the average player. Colette recovered from her lowest point despite being, arguably, the worst brawler in the history of the game on release, yet supercell won't talk about that.
As for Janet, I understand why people don't like playing her. I personally find enjoyment in most brawlers in the game, I love Ruffs and Eve and I enjoy Lou and Otis all in all, but Janet, while tolerable, is a brawler that I generally try to avoid. She can do a lot of stuff but none are particularly rewarding, her gameplay is slow but unlike Eve or Ruffs there's never a moment where your efforts show big results (like pushing the enemy team back with your hatchling army or having all your team buffed and dealing high damage). Her controller aspect is unmatched, but there really isn't a moment when I play her and I'm not thinking "dang, I could be playing another brawler".
Love your videos btw, as someone who thinks a lot about the game's balance and how the casual and competitive playerbases interact with it, it was like finding a hidden gem.

Her gadgets are just escape tools or for control, and once again, her star power that increases speed is the only one of her add-ons that make her more fun to play
ruffs: got nerfed in a way that made him unfun to play - release ruffs and ruffs now are quite different brawlers. they're not really comparable and have different playstyles.
janet: she was strong, but she was also clunky and due to her zoner role, performs better on organized teams. this is why they waited so long to nerf her - she was strong in organized team play, but not very strong on ladder. this is a case like byron's - once they fell off competitive, they would fall off casual play as well, but they were never played there to begin with.
because of this, i wouldn't say weak releases are the sole reason why these brawlers don't recover, but it's always better to maximize retention than risk lowering it, which is why I mentioned it

Imo the reason she is super unpopular rn are her undertuned numbers. Back when she was released she was an S-tier Brawler for a very long time and even after a bunch of nerfs she still was fluctuating between A and S-tier. But somewhere in June 2023 (I think it happened around that time) the dev team decided she was meta for too long and basically killed her and she never got any significant buffs again. I really miss Janet meta, one of the Brawlers who despite being meta wasn't broken to deal with (at least after her first bunch of nerfs after release)

This is the problem with brawlers that are a “jack of all trades”. They’re amazing if they’re really good, but if they aren’t they’re really bad. almost no in between. She doesn’t have a specific mode she’s best or worst in, so other brawlers outclass her in every mode because she’s just in the middle

Tbh most people say that Janet is a boring brawler who’s straight up trash. Personally I find Janet fun because I used to main crow, spike, surge, all these high dmg brawlers than can just obliterate like 30 franks in 2 seconds. But that’s pretty much it, it’s just button mashing. Janet is a slower pace brawler, personally I like to play because she’s highly defensive and in the current meta.(frank meg and lily) she out ranges all of them similar to snipers. She also has two very very good gadgets. But that’s just my opinion. There’s brawlers like Gray and Byron who are also versatile and fun.

This is the only brawler that is somehow Boring and Shit. Her mechanic is awkward, her super is gimmicky and weird to use, and her gadgets are just mid.
Why peapole hate Janet? I find her very fun to play. She might not be the best brawler but she is so fun. Hopefully soon Janet gets a rework to be a little bit better
I main Janet. I find generalists to be really fun, and i find her kit interesting. My winrate with her has got to be at least 85%, but I couldn’t tell you why. This is a really good analysis, and i think she could become used again with some tweaking.
8:20 isn't brock just way better at that
brock can zone chokepoints like the one in kaboom canyon's side lane, but he struggles in open space due to both slow projectile and burning only where the rocket explodes. mandy is much more consistent, because her pressure range extends well beyond any other character's in the game. that's the thing - you aren't competing with the other marksmen, leaving you free to be useful in other ways. If Janet had a 10-tile range, she would have to then be balanced around being better or worse than certain marksmen at certain things. This promotes marksman sameness syndrome (something I will talk about later for sure) and reduces the creativity that the devs can have on characters. Janet's more interesting because she doesn't have a 10-tile range, leaving her free to allocate resources in another area of her kit.
It's like how removing the Hypercharge Unleashed event (which didn't bring much player retention) opened up room for newer, more exciting events (like Godzilla) to be introduced, that would make the game more interesting while also not wrecking the economy.

Realistically speaking a big problem is randoms, for example I prefer using brawlers like nita and piper because they are brawlers that can carry if my teammates are trash. Using brawlers like Janet makes you rely on randoms more
I got Janet like 2 weeks ago and pushed her to 812 just cause I liked her. Imo she’s a very balanced brawler but not as good as she should be.
As an old player who just returned to the game and got Janet recently, I say that her playstyle feels very clunky. It gives me the awkward feeling of playing the old Mortis without the long dash update or maybe even worse. I mean compared to other marksmen such as Piper and Bea, unlike them, her basic attacks take time to focus but the range and damage is mid.
Her ultimate is unique but it lacks the freedom to properly bombard the opponent since it takes accurate timing and precision to match your flight to the opponent’s movement or else you won’t be able to maximize the damage.
What’s worse is that her gadgets and star powers are just designed to fix her kit, they do not give her any remarkable features or any significant additions to her playstyle.

I like the format of your video, but calling Janet "marksman" and comparing her to actual snipers is a mistake imo. She fits much better role as "Controller" as zoning and checking bushes is her speciality. She literally gets outranged by actual snipers and cannot be used to "snipe out" specific targets.
Supercell messed up brawler classes once again and now people perceive those brawlers in a wrong way...
janet's definitely a marksman - marksmen have the capability to duel at long ranges, that makes sense for janet. the difference is how she goes about dueling at those long ranges - controlling, which is why her secondary typing is as a controller. this isn't a case of supercell messing up brawler classes, this is a case of them not providing dual hybrid classes for brawlers that need it.
janet's not effective as a pure controller, there are better brawlers for that, that are more mechanically suited to assume more of a control role. janet's your pick whenever you want a brawler that can consistently duel at long ranges, but also has the secondary ability to control, just to handle different matchups.

And how is that Janet is a not a controller if the role of a controller is exactly at zoning? Again, with the same logic, would you pick Janet against Nani and Piper on shooting star? Probably not, since Piper and Nani are just better snipers and you will just go R-T.
My point is - how will classification of Janet as marksman will help you in draft if you will still not use Janet for that? Classification should not be based off just one stat - classification should make your matchup choices as effective as possible and in this case Supercell messed up.

I'ma be real. I've rarely encountered a Janet in a game but Bot-controlled or not, her super is stupidly easy to kite (just move in circles and no damage lmao)
you'd think that, but it's exactly what you said. you move in very predictable circles, making it very easy for their teammate to shoot you down. it's like lou - you'd think spinning while in his super would just make yourself unaffected by the super, but you're moving in a straight line which is exactly what the lou player wants.
although i will admit, it's harder for janet to pull off because her style of pressure requires her to not be able to exert her own pressure (though this is made up for by near global range, so you can kill the enemy in your lane and then help your mid teammate kill their mid teammate really easily
