  • It was the 1980s, and Ford had decided to all but quit the racetrack and V8 engines. Yet one man in Ford’s design studio, Wayne Draper, remained undeterred by the company’s future plans for racing and continued to build HO Falcons - under the cover of darkness. Today Wayne’s son Rob carries his Father’s mantle and the Australian motoring legacy that is the HO nameplate and Phase Autos.

    Thanks for the great response everyone and kind words. The feedback my end has been very cool. I've had calls from some Ford heroes of yesteryear who are happy to see the Phase 5 / 6 legacy live on.

      Hey Rob, beautiful car and an amazing story, have you finished the TV series?
      I'm sure many Aussies would love to watch it.
      Cheers.

    Awesome to see Rob - such a great Legacy, kept alive. There are so many GRP C builds coming out of the woodwork these days. Glad to be part of those builds! Thanks for all you have done for my build, especially at the same time as your major accident. For those uninitiated, please dont confuse yourself with GTHO JG33 cars cf the day. The XE Phase 6 is named only as a 'what could of been' if Ford kept going with the "Phase' naming. Lucky for us - Wayne kept it going "under the cover of darkness" - Rob Draper.

    Under FIA rules (Back then FISA) which the Australian racing ruling body The Confederation of Australian Motor Sport was bound to, a touring car could not be homologated for racing unless it was endorsed by an automotive manufacturer with its own manufacturing compliance plates. Ford Australia refused to have anything to do with homologating the XD, so Draper got around that by homologating the XD Falcon for racing through his joint ownership of ‘Phase Autos Pty Ltd’. Being a vehicle ‘manufacturer’ with its own compliance plates, Phase Autos produced the minimum number (twenty five) of ‘XD Phase Five’ Falcon road cars required to homologate the XD for racing. These cars were fitted with fiberglass wheel arch flares, a front spoiler and a rear spoiler for the race cars. The body components were supplied to racing teams through "Murray Carter Motors". A rear spoiler was not approved for use by CAMS for the XD until mid 1980 just in time for Bathurst, but it would not be the one originally submitted by Phase Autos. Murray Carter's name is on the CAMS application for homologation as the official supplier of the body parts for the race cars, and the XDs running gear homolgation was done seperately by Garry Willmington. Note that the original concept by Draper had box style wheel arch extensions similar to what was fitted to the Group A BMW M3, a roof mounted 'deflector' to channel air to the rear spoiler and 'splitter plates' on the front guards. CAMS accepted both homolgation applications as one car but rejected the splitter plates, the roof mounted deflector and rear spoiler. Here is a pic of the original phase 5 concept. i.imgur.com/EKngerL.jpg

    The XE and even more so the XD were very very similar to the Mk2 Ford Granada which was a brilliant car in the UK and Europe. My dad always wanted one and they migrated to Australia and bought an EFI 4.1 XE. We both loved that car. The Falcon XD has the same front lights as the Granada and the Falcon's have a lower waistband. The Granada is also amazing, I had a few uncles who own both the Mk1 and Mk2

    Remember seeing them back in the 1980's, phase 5 and 6 ho, with body kits etc, ( But so many FAKES were also out there, put onto V8 XD/XE's and so many people got ripped off, because they only made so many and they had to come by companies which had the contract to make the phase 5/6's etc).
    Because ford did not want to make the v8 anymore because of fuel issue, they got rid of the v8 engine for a 4lt injected 6, yet holden stuck to the v8 thus selling more than ford and holden did have a 6 and 4's as well in the various engine combo's , had a VB SLE 5lt, then a VK Calais injected 6, even a XD 5.8lt Ghia & i hand painted the snowflake chia rims in gold and had the outer surface polished, and put the chrome giha caps on, they looked the mint, now i have the VF Redline.🚗🚗🚗🚗🙌🙌👌👌👍👍😎😎

    As long as Murray Carter and Garry Willmington are part of the story for the XD. Ford pulled out long before 1979.

    • @RobDraper
      @RobDraper ปีที่แล้ว

      Garry modified the heads. The big job was homologating the XD and selling the required amount of cars with a compliance plate. Not easy. That was Wayne Draper and Bob McWilliam (was going to be Moffat for a moment but as we know he bailed on Ford). My father had to remain invisible, since he was a Ford employee, because Ford insisted the XD not see the race track. They were adamant. Garry still has a letter from Edsel saying just that, "the Ford Falcon is not to see the race track". So while Ford had pulled financial support for motor racing before, it wasn't until 1979 that they pulled the Falcon (or tried to).
