I worked for several years as a tire technician on the Firestone Firehawk IndyCar tires. In case of a blow out I used a reciprocating saw to cut them apart. My main job was looking for belt delamination and figure out why it happened.
The tyres are so complex like you think "it's just rubber" but there is so much more to it. So much money and research goes into this it's totally its own section beside the cars. And this just shows the importance for knowing or having the most data on the tyres to be able to extract the most grip.
@@fernando47180 I don't it would be. technology is advance now compared from the pass. they can disable the throttle pedal till the fuel cap is closed of fuel nozzel is completely off
I'm surprised to hear you say you never thought of tire noise- it's most of what you hear every day when you go outside. In a city, it's a vast majority of the ambient sound, and has been since engines (petrol and otherwise) have gotten relatively quiet, but tires have not. I learned this one the hard way riding a bike path in the middle of a freeway near an airport, I couldn't hear the 737 a few hundred feet overhead because of the noise from the cars nearby.
When I was a child I used to think that ambient air made a sound. I didn't realise that what I was actually hearing in moments outside with no other noise was mass tyre roar from the M4 motorway a couple of miles from my home...
That was really interesting, thanks for all the effort you put into this. Would definitely watch more about the manufacturing process if you get the opportunity.
All of this research and all these facilities and F1 drivers still end up complaining about the tires’ inconsistency between different days of the same race weekend. Simulation and machine testing can only teach so much. Honestly, just bring back tire wars. It would be beneficial for everyone.
I sold tires in Texas for over a decade. All the older guys who made the most sales used to say "Those Pirellis dont last cos they test em in Italy where the climates all cooler and they wear ouit faster in this texas heat". I used to parrot their advice. I think back and laugh now...
I have always hoped to add more tire suppliers. A single tire supplier means monopoly and unstable quality. The team has complained about this issue several times. Pirelli's tire degradation seems to be the most obvious among all tire suppliers. And the team does not really know the limit of the decline. As a result, the team's strategy will become very extreme. If Michelin or Bridgestone can be added, the situation will be much better. Increasing competition is still important. However, I understand that Michelin withdrew from the F1 supply contract mainly because consumption and research and development are not proportional. Simply put, supplying F1 is a losing business. In the end, they withdrew from the tire supply. The current F1 is not good-looking, and it is even a bit too boring. Maybe it won't be long before the F1 bubble will stop completely.
It would be really cool to see the testing machine introduce curbing. It could be done if the surface below the road belt had hydraulicly lifted sections.
really good vid and very interesting. Thank you. One thing, and i'm sure i wont be alone in asking... How do they make the new tyres so shiny and stay shiny until fitted and used?? Is it a heat treatment? A special coating? A combination of both? Thank you in advance :)
and the Michelin Man .. which in my mind, is everlasting ultimate product marketing. Is the michelin man even for sale these days ? What could pirelli even be able to do to match that iconic status. After all, pirelli just throw their used rubber into more rubber. sure a hat and a tshirt, but pirelli are not and have not created anything "iconic". No logo. No identity. just dull record book entries.
How do you know that Michelin makes a far better product? Pirelli makes tires for the fastest cars in the world, that achieve unbelievable performance. And btw even if you take a trip to the nurburgring you will see that most supercars have Pirelli tires
I dont care for the current objective of making tires that have to be babied to finish a race. The racing was better in the 00's when you have Michelin and Bridgestone buiding tires that you could push and race on. Now we have the worlds best drivers driving to a click track
@@iam_Oswald GR or Matt? GR said the Pirelli data on the tyres are not accurate, causing race strategies to change dramatically, race to race. Matt says in this video that Pirelli stress test their tyres a lot and have many ways of doing it. Though I did notice some improvements in the facilities they use for the tyres. And maybe Pirelli should let teams test the tyres even further than they already do.
That’s a rather simplistic opinion. It’s impossible to 100% map a tyre to a track surface as the track is constantly changing throughout the race - and the driver will not always drive optimally due to his own errors and traffic
Very cool video. Now every time I watch F1 I will feel like one of the Pirelli techs. Who’s in charge of those heinous wheel covers? Those need to go. I don’t care how much more aero it makes the car. People wanna see cool rims
The Tom Scott of Motorsport
Very accurate.
Very accurate, very high compliment, very deserved!
Absolutely
Thats so right
Scom Tott?
YEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSS please try to show the manufacturing process, that's very interesting to materials nerds like me
Yeah, there's a video out there of how F1 tyres are made.
If they won't even let you buy a legit F1 tyre why do you think they'll show any step of the process in more than passing detail?
Nice explanation of wheel slip and load, it's a very underestimated part of motorsports.

thanks for your service

Are you allowed to say "generally" what the rough procedure would be if an event similar to the F1 2021 Baku or 2023 Qatar GPs were to occur?
Like a real tire mechanic ❤
In nascar how much difference is there between a right and left tire?
Just interested 😊
@@Sassenhaim I think JGR uploaded a short about the martinsville tires where the lefts have minimal air pressure and are a softer compound?

Mario Isola - my GOAT! Those 3D graphics are super clean too!
It's always a good day when a Matt Amys vid drops! Please please please try to show how the tyres are made in future - I really wanna know
THIS IS WHY HE'S THE GOAT
What a legend. I love seeing behind the scenes of the stuff we often overlook in motorsport! Great video. 🔥
Fascinating! Thank you for that! 🙏🏻👍🏻 More please!
bring back the old days where there was multiple tyre manufacturer to lessen the predictability of the race. plus fuel stops. make it more exciting
Wouldn't that compromise safety?

Good catch! I'm so curious to see what is in there!
Best F1 youtube channel by far, always very interesting and informative, stuff you don't see anywhere else
Honestly I'm still amazed how Matt gets all these access 😆 Great video tho, as always

Nice vid, i like this kind of vids when i'm eating, it helps me to relax and enjoy the food 👍👍
The GOAT has posted🤚🏿🗿
There is a whole separate room for all the Pirelli calendars... so used to look forward to those being released. If ya know you know.
We are waiting for christmas gift! (new grid edit tutorial would be lovely!!!) Best regards, xoxo

Don’t show this to Bin Russel
Brilliant brilliant video!!
Awesome video, hope you can make the manufacturing process video happen.
Fantastic video
nice! would have loved to see the raw footage and sound of those tests ;-)
Yes please show how they are made!! Also how they fuel F1 cars now lol I can’t find any videos on it

Secret test facility... not so secret now 😂
At this point to think you could get rid of tire blankets or even switch brands is ridiculous thought to even entertain
0:01 not so secret anymore 😉
Do it!
100kg? Seems low
No wonder their tires are shit if they are putting 100kg of load on a test where the real tire would have at least four times that
How do they make the virtual tyre for the sim? Its probably a trade secret but that is extremely interesting and smart!

it be cool if they use two different type of tires company's even if it means same time different tires to see who does better with what

Michelin wins there
No tyre war, the tyres are junk.

@Revolzer I though it was some type of plastic or wood 🙈

They should let Goodyear use it for the crappy NASCAR tires 😂😂

I wish they made Nascars tires .
Secret testing facility 😅 not anymore
Sans concurrence comme Michelin, ce constructeur est le meilleur ou plus précisément, le moins mauvais...
They better turn it around tyre degradation at an all time high for F1.
Are they actually tested? based on some of the issues from this season… there is definitely some extra quality control needed…
That’s a rather simplistic opinion. It’s impossible to 100% map a tyre to a track surface as the track is constantly changing throughout the race - and the driver will not always drive optimally due to his own errors and traffic

Probably why they are so s***. Maybe start testing them on cars instead of in a cheese factory.
Well its not a seceret anymore is it?

They suck. I hope they get a new tire supplier.
Why are they so criticized then?
They need to change the tyres. Current ones suck
Whaaaat are you talking about..these tires are the best they’ve ever been…they don’t even go flat in a wreck
It's time F1 ends this monopoly and let's other tyre manufacturer join because Pierrli era has been the worse
None of them want to join because of the tyre degradation rules
Partnership extended onlybecause no other manufacturer wants it !
first
Michelin > Pirelli
Nokia > Michelin
