  • Sunflower seeds are a great source of plant protein and healthy fat. And that translates to energy for your body! Zac loves sunflower seeds and we have the ability to now grow our own. It's time to harvest our seeds and get them processed for storage during the winter.

      We don’t see guns as killers only people. Just another tool. Snakes in fall are looking for places to hibernate. They love gardens because of field rats and bunnies.

    A good way to check for worms is to put the seeds in a bucket of water. The ones that sink are good to eat or plant, and the ones that float are either sterile or have worms in them.
    Thanks for the great video!

      @PeterSedesse 6 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Yep, I was just going to post the same thing. It is a good idea to soak the seeds in twice as much water. Not only do the worm-infested seeds float but a lot of other stuff like bugs will float too.

    I dry the entire flower with seeds intact and place one dried flower per week in the chicken coop. The chickens to a wonderful job of picking the seeds off the flower head and keeps them from getting bored while penned up when their not free-range.
    Question: Are you planning a solar food dryer for dehydrating sliced veggies for next year as an option for food storage?

      Alan> all salt is sea salt, unless it's synthetic. Salt flats are mined - sea salt is not just from evaporating sea water. There is no rule that says you have to do either or to call it sea salt.
      And those 31 minerals are bullshit btw. Eat a balanced diet, then you don't have to care about any of this stuff.

    I love your work; personally I put seeds for germination into paper bags, not plastic - the plastic makes them sweat and mold, ruining the seed, in my experience - especially if gathering from heads that are still green. Whatever works for you, but this is what I've found working in Northwest WA.

If i let the stalks dry out if i cut them, would they turn into a woody pole i could use. I also grow moonflowers and morning glories, so that would be a great alternative to a trellis.

      From the Redmond Real Salt Website: "Real Salt is an all-natural sea salt that comes from our underground salt deposit in Central Utah. The deposit was left there by a pristine ancient sea that covered much of North America millions of years ago."

    Very informative, thank you. Hopefully I'll be able to harvest some seeds from my garden this year :)

    Get a barrel or garbage can and stretch 1 inch hardware cloth over it. Rob the flower heads over the hardware cloth and the seeds fall into the barrel. Much easier on hands. Any partially developed seeds go to chickens.

    Hey, I harvested some myself in the recent days and since you are a big sunflower eater, I ask you:
    Do the own seeds taste better then the storebought ones?
    Greetings to you!

    We have a local group that purchases from Country Life Natural Foods. They carry most staples in bulk along with Real Salt. Does not take many like minded individuals to have it shipped to your house free of shipping.
