Medieval Log Cabin Door | Crafted from the Swedish Forest

- I spent all winter learning and perfecting this craft by hand. This is my first door I have built. Everything is hand-made just from the materials I could forage in the Swedish forest. Except from the hinges and lock, I could have made these myself also but found them dirt cheap at a flea market. The nails, the wood, moss insulation, the key, the wooden handle and the handle on the latch made from a deer horn, is all materials made or forage by myself, (basically everything).
Hope you like this video. I am finally learning how to edit properly, hopefully you notice the better quality. Let me know. This could have easily been a 2 hour video, on every step more in detail. I am thinking about starting a new channel which releases the full versions of my videos. Let me also know if this is something you would watch. Thank you.

I’m a 77 yr old American grandmother, and I love watching Erik! My deceased husband loved to build many things all his life, but not in wilderness. My adult sons and grandsons like to build, but again. I shared this with one grandson who is part Swedish, and he said he already watched them. Erik’s work ethic, skills, & motivation to keep developing is wonderful to see. He’s definitely a real excellent example for anyone to follow.

I've seen many people burn the wood boards but haven't seen anyone brush and clean them up to that extent, gives it a really beautiful color and look!!

Erik not only built his cabin, but he did what no one on YT has done, and that is build the roof *PROPERLY* and *INSULATED* the roof properly! This is something that all who are building their cabins have not done and unlike any of theirs with extremely insufficient R-rating and poor roof ventilation, this cabin will be the coziest of all.

That door is just beautiful! Burning the surface gives it such a rich color. The grain really stands out :)
When you burn wood it releases chemicals that are alike Creosote, so it's also a weather treatment.
that's called "seasoning", if I am correct
Shou Sugi Ban is the name of the technique he used. It's ancient.
termites or other pests won't touch burned wood.
Shou sugi ban is an ancient Japanese method of preserving wood rendering it water proof, also rot, fungus, and insect resistant. You Tube content creator Sean of My Self Reliance used shou sugi ban when he built his first cabin and on the one he is currently building.

When you are cooking, I can imagine how delicious the cooking aromas must be, thinking back to when I used to go camping as a Boy Scout in mountain pine forests in my teenage years. Smelling wood smoke mixed with meat, bread, and vegetables on a cold breeze when you're relaxing after strenuous physical activity is an experience that cannot be matched.
When you feel a big love to be in the forest then this kind of achievements are possible.

His hand/eye coordination is amazing.
What this man does is equivalent to each item is a Rolls Royce or Cadillac or old-time Bentley or Corniche II or Ferrari or Lambergini. It isn't just utiity, he creates things in the most exquisite & detailed manner, from the very first point of choosing the logs, to the very last finishing touches It's all made of the finest quality, workmanship, skill, durability & BEAUTY. He thinks BIG, acts big & builds big. I've watched other buildfrom-scratch 2 year jobs - this is DIFFERENT the way a Rolls is from a Ford. Another guys makes it all functional, it works, it's warm, it's a table, windows all work - but it ain't Eric. The tiniest details & ways of Eric make him like another Proenekke only sometimes more beautiful work. Here he makes this Medieval door. Another video he makes a TABLE to die for, worth if you honestly measure it, thousands, because it will last many generations - hundreds of years or forever if cared for. Then the fireplace/furnace indoor is to die for. You have to see it to believe me.
He really nailed it in the Forge.

The editing step up is notable and really nice, although I think you can step up the audio further by getting more into mixing. I'd still love to see a more uncut version of this though on like a second channel.

@@ErikGrankvist The editing really took up a notch and is generally great. But for me it is sometimes a bit "too" edited, if I may say so. For example in this video at 6:50 I would really have liked to see a bit more between the burnt and the finished state - just to see how the process progresses. Another would be at 7:11 as to how you fitted the boards together after the fire treatment.

I was so caught up in the beauty of the craftsmanship I hadn't noticed the improved editting. There is something mesmeric about hand crafting a cabin in the woods.

Love how you keep everything authentic in this build. I am a builder myself, via modern ways lol, so I know it must be tempting sometimes to just use screws or fabricated nails or so. Great to see you make your own nails and so. We can tell you try to make everything 'old school' as much as you can. Most people who watch this are living their outdoors dream through you.

It is fantastic to see how you with an almost forgotten craft technique create these buildings that will stand beyond the foreseeable future. It is both solid and beautiful at the same time.
I have a friend who is a finish carpenter, and he is fascinated to see the manual craftsmanship. I am also. The wicket set into the door was an excellent detail. The dovetail joints in the door frame were not something I would have thought to do myself, but I'm not a good woodworker.

As a lady over 60 , and being a nature buff in my younger days...this was very amazing to see a guy under 25
that built this whole cabin on your own....(.I saw the 2 years video.) The one thing that bothered me through the whole thing..was that your hands and feet were several times venerable, to being injured, with limited protection, while slinging a sharp axe. I saw a few cuts here and there....but you did a good job of editing over time, so if you did have a wound, it could have healed by the next video..I am guessing that you must have grown up around a father and/or grandfather that taught you good skills as a young boy..and you continued to learn more over time with experience. This was put together extremely well...including the German short hair pointer... that was watching most everything you did ..till...
