- The West Coast of New Zealand's South Island is a place like no other, with huge glaciers, lush native bush, scenic coastal roads, and a rich mining history it's well worth visiting.
We have just spent the past couple of months travelling from the very top of the West Coast all the way down to the bottom and have put together a list of 5 things we think you should not miss when visiting!

I went into Waiuta in April this year with my son, i also agree with going to the blowholes halfway between Greymouth and Westport
Waiuta is neat aye! Well worth that drive up the gravel road to see it 😊

...You missed star attraction No. 4.5 near the Hokitika gorge! - the Shaya moya Ecosite which takes just one guest booking per night, has a fabulous outdoor bath under the stars, makes the best woodfired pizza, and you can do a blacksmithing experience and farm tour as well. Book on Campable.
Oh wow all of that sounds pretty amazing! I do like an outdoor bath 😁 probably the sort of place visit if you manage to leave the kids at home haha

Excellent choices, especially when traveling with kids. Sad that on my last glacier visit about 10 years ago, you could climb up onto Fox Glacier.
Yeh that is a bit of a shame! The paths seem to change every now and then. Would have loved to have seen one of the glaciers up close!
If your going to the west coast i would think you should go to shanty town. It tells you all about the past life back in the old days

You missed the most interesting and iconic town on the West Coast with a true 19th Century feel and amazing gold mining history, the first town in the Southern Hemisphere to have a public electricity supply (the original setup now being restored) and rapidly becoming an artist hub. It's amazing how many people are not aware of all this until they see it and rave about it. Reefton!!
Oh we did go to Reefton! Had a nice few nights there staying at the race course.. I don’t think we filmed it 😀 Cute little town!
@@AdventuresWithRosy I forgot to mention Black's Point too (2km from Reefton and where I live) Trails, Mountain bike trails, river swimming, gold panning, amazing museum, pottery, old gold mines, birthplace of Jack Lovelock, Olympic gold 1500m in 1936 )
Oh perfect we will have to put that list for when we go back 😊 Chelsea wants more of that Reefton Gin so we will have to go back haha

Lake Matheson between Franz Joseph Glacier and Fox Glacier is one of the most beautiful Lakes in the World in Winter when there is a Beautiful Reflection in the Water, The West Coast has many Beautiful lakes including Lake Brunner north east of Greymouth
Oh yeh we went to Lake Matheson the next time we drove down the coast, beautiful spot huh! I took my camera and tripod for that famous photo but there was wind and the lake wasn’t still! Go figure 😅

10 mile creek? Nah we didn’t! Will have to add it to the list and go back sometime 😁
Point Elizabeth track comes off Cobden by Greymouth is nice to walk

The Wet Coast is one of our favourite places in the country which is full of MUST DO's. I think you should have made it 10, not 5 as some classics like the Oparara Basin, Charming Creek Walkway and Brunner Mine missed out.
Oh yeh good point forgot all about the Oparara basin! How neat are those arches up there. You are right about a charming creek too, great spot! We did so many walks over the last few months we forgot some of them 😅
Did you go up Hargreaves road to the caves and arches well worth it just north of Karamea ?
Yeh we did! Awesome up there aye 👍 wish we had a torch for that bigger cave at the end of the road, looked huge
@@AdventuresWithRosy I had the wrong road anyways it’s McCallums Mill road Hargreaves is the next one passed it I just brought a safari off the farmer up there and went up every road i could on the way out it must of been a off day there was no sand flies

I`m in horror about the glaciers current state. Franz Josef glacier reached nearly the ground around 25 years ago.
It’s pretty scary when you see those signs of where those glaciers were 50-100 years ago! 🫣
That's what glaciers do, hence how valleys are created. Learned that at primary school.
