Hey guys, when you buy fish & chips you should always poke your finger through the end of the paper so they don’t steam, and when you get to your eating spot they are much crisper ❤
Whitebait, Famous Delicatessen all over New Zealand, So if you see the whitebait sign.. Don't hesitate Get some, their made as fritters.. NZ recommends..
Apart from our amazing country, what makes Aotearoa New Zealand unique is people. You have both done an amazing job showing who we are. Hopefully we recognise our problems, but try to be the best we can be.
If you ever come to back to Hokitika gordge make sure you go to the Kokatahi pub it’s the best and has the best homemade whitebait patties and beer amazing accommodation
Its glacial water Glen, gonna be super chilly.. and damn thats a lot of chips for $5.50 and $5.00 for Fish ???? !!!! almost worth the drive from Auckland.....
The turquoise colour of the water at the Hokitika Gorge is due to the minerals in the rock flour washed down from the glaciers up in the Southern Alps which is relatively close to the gorge. This is the same for the Blue Pools that you visited just before the Haast Pass on the Otago side. I visited both places several years ago. Absolutely spectacular.
Stumpers Bar and Cafe does some great meals, especially their Blue Cod and Chips. Whitebait is a juvenile native fish that is caught in nets as it enters the rivers. It is a local delicacy and very popular. There is a tightly controlled season for catching them.
Very Very nice, As with all your videos, they always 1st class stuff. Great to see you again always something interesting to see. Regards South Africa 🇿🇦.
Whitebait are the young of one of our native fish. They are about 2cm long and caught by net. A hand full are added whole to beaten egg then fried as a fritter. They are a delicacy here in NZ.
At that price, the fish is probably Elephant Fish. A kind of shark... In most South Island F&C shops the cheap standard piece of fish is Elephant Fish.
That "old railway bridge" you commented on is the old Arahura Bridge. It was one of three bridges that were shared by both cars and trains until fairly recently. This meant that before driving over the bridge you had to be sure that no trains were coming. The last one to be replaced was the Taramakau River Bridge which you would have crossed between Kumara Junction and Camerons as you headed north into Greymouth.
Once again thank you for taking me back to places I used to live. Hoki has come up in the world and I love it. That St Vinnies op shop is where I got hooked on thrifting. It's a great one.
I had a dark winter miserable day in Hoki 45 yrs ago, good to see the town looking bright and its great to get a contemporary impression. I remember the greenstone shops.
At least a rainy day on the coast is still beautiful! My grandmother's cousins husband owned one of the greenstone factories in Hokitika, spend so much time there as a child
I am so mad, my mouth is watering, I can't find decent fish & chips in Doha where I'm currently living! Mmm.... but another gem of a video Glen & Mado plus friend!
Hey guys, if you make it up to the north island, can i suggest you guys check out, Levin and Foxton, Foxton is a Dutch town, both are small towns guys, i think you will enjoy Foxton. 👌

I suggest checking out some of the old mining towns on the west coast as well if you get a chance. Most of them are now doc sites. Reefton is also pretty interesting in terms of its history with mining

Im born there beautful town , not far off beauty to Queestown why realestate expensive . My parents own the mansion top of collingwood street if you walk up the Grampians
My Irish ancestors settled on the West Coast in the 1800s, I think they were coal miners. My grandmother was born in Stillwater which is near Greymouth.
My mother's families from Militon just on your right outside Westport yous should checkout the old mines and township well known for its ghosts my great-grandfather was killed in the mine in the thirties.
Hello Mado and Glen your fish and chips would cost in Australia sixty dollars for two people twenty dollars haaa nothing was a big feed for two I miss my fish and chips in New Zealand Australia no good for that and pastry food nah still trying to find a a good pie so enjoy your food and coffee over there 😅

@@GlenAndMado I live in Perth all good probably be cheaper to fly it from New Zealand than buy it here haaa yeah right cheers guys enjoy yourselves catch cha
The West Coast is amazing, isolated and a bit wild, but as someone who always attracts biting insects and gets driven crazy by the itching, I would never wear shorts there (sandflies target legs) and always wear a light long-sleeved shirt.
The blue like color is the result of sediment being washed down from the surrounding mountains you see it every where in the meckenise country and south Otago .....
The Maori name for greenstone / jade is " Pounamu " Not eating a whitebait pattie , fritter on the West Coast , is like travelling to Dublin and not drinking a pint of Guiness ! Sacrilege !!

Little tip, a mouthful or two of soft drink/soda with the fish’n’chips will get rid of the grease/salt straight away. Really enjoying your videos.

Can't beat good fish n chips
If you ever come to back to Hokitika gordge make sure you go to the Kokatahi pub it’s the best and has the best homemade whitebait patties and beer amazing accommodation

Always tear the fish and chips packet open slightly to let the steam out otherwise the chips go soggy.
