Just because it’s a paint by numbers doesn’t mean you have no artistic freedom. No one is going to stop you from painting outside the lines or using whatever color you want. I like to use the numbers as a guide and then improvise different parts.
@Tomek Pluta I don't get your question. Art is highly subjective, in many ways there is no answer to what art is. If it's art to you that is all that matter.
I’m about a quarter done with my first paint by numbers kit. It does take a lot of time and my eyes tend to lose focus after awhile, but it is relaxing and satisfying. I was happy to see that even a non artist (like myself) made a painting that looked pretty good!
Next time try ironing the canvas to get all the creases out before painting. Then I would use clear gesso. Then I like stretching it on stretcher bars. And finally I would add Liquitex Flow aid to the paints to make them creamier before I would paint.
Yes definitely! The 26 hours was worth it, you can see the details and the painting looks more realistic. I'm glad I watched this cause now I know it depends on the artist and not the quality of the kit.
thank you for watching it :) And yes your patience is very important if you want to have a nice end result. I do also think the quality of the kit matters, but this one was one of the cheapest I could find and it turned out pretty! So hopefully that helps you if you decide to make a painting yourself
I just bought my 1st kit. I'm going to clear gesso my canvas and use a flow aid in my paint along with better brushes. Luckily I have everything already.
I just received my very first order and I plan on doing the exact same thing, gesso and flow aid! I’m also thinking about doing the one-stroke method for blending the lines in certain areas of the painting.
Fun to watch and see the outcome however I don't consider taking a lot of time to do as a CON. I enjoy taking my time, that's what it's all about for me.
I just ordered this exact PBN and was so happy to find it being done here. I had initially considered starting with the darkest color like Bas did but after seeing the final results, I will follow your lead and do the mid range colors first. Thank you for this!
My Dad use to do this in the 60s , believe it or not some of his paintings are now worth good money ! but would never sell them, nice job you guys, I do this while watching TV to avoid all the Sales adds.
I’ve been painting by numbers for around 4 years. I’ve even done a few commissions for friends and family now I’m more confident. Canvas, paint and brushes are really important for a good finish. I am not an artist but have plenty of patience. Thanks
Great results. Just a heads up! Use clear gesso on canvas prior to painting. Makes a huge difference in filling in all of the divits on the piece. Good job guys 👍
I've found that the toothpicks used to stir the paint are great to push paint into little areas on the canvas. Even smaller than the tip of the brush! I also have a very small, fine paintbrush I use that I purchased on my own, for not very much money. I have also been known to use the tip of a pin (safety pin or sewing pin) to add little details like a line through feathers in a flamingo. I think working a very blue/brown painting like your demo would be awfully depressing; I search out PNB kits that are bright colors and fun images to keep myself entertained while I work on them for hours and hours and hours :) It's nice to know through your demonstration that taking the time and effort in details does make a difference in the outcome!
I enjoy it because it's relaxing takes the stress out of life. I'm an artist and two or three hours a day and take a week to finish a painting well I'm babysitting the kids doing online schooling. I enjoy it to see the finished painting.
Question. In the canvas there are a few spots with no number but just a vertical little line and I don’t know what to do with it. What color do I use for that. Hope you can help.
Hii, in my paint by number set there was an example on a paper sheet, on the paper you can see all the numbers, even in the tiniest areas. Otherwise, you could look online to see the finished piece and check what colors they used so if kind of blends in with the rest
Theu do take a long time, which is why I both dislike and like about it. I like that it does help you with some skill on learning how things are drawn, and getting used to painting with a brush. I love painting but am not very good at it, but I am a slight perfectionist with a short attention span, so it is a good exercise for me.
Hi, I am half way through my painting and I have ruined 5 brushes so far, the edges become frayed. I wash them properly and don't treat them roughly, what am I doing wrong? Any advice is appreciated.
hmmm that doesn't sound nice! I am not sure what could be the problem... the brushes could just be cheap and bad quality but you could try to softly dry them after washing?
Yes, I have been using cheapish brushes as well as the blue ones that came with the set. I have ordered some better ones from Amazon, just waiting for them to arrive.
I really like that. What is the name of it and where did you get it? I normally don’t like pictures of ships but I think this one is beautiful. I want to paint it.
Just started my gorilla with Headphones paint by numbers. My eye sight isn't so great so it's quite a challenge. I use a magnifying glass and lamp. The hardest thing I've found is the paint not flowing on the canvas so I'm using palette paper to mix my paint with a few drops of water. I didn't like the smaller brushes, I've ordered a nice set online. It certainly take a long time to do, but will be worth it in the end.
Hello, I ordered this paint by numbers, I’m anxious to receive it. Does anyone know the name and year of this warship if it did exist? Thanks in advance. Serge
Hi serge! Hope your painting arrives soon and you will enjoy making it. I am not sure about the name or year of the ship but I am sure it is based upon an actual ship
@@CarlijnWeirdArt Hello, One of two arrived today, The London Tower Bridge . After I open the package, I was EXTREMELY disappointed after I looked at the small photo that was include with the brushes and the paint pots. The photo does not come close to look like the image on the Amazon’s web page. I’m very tempted to return this paint by numbers. How did yours turned out?
@@SJG-96 hmm that is a difficult situation, in my package the lite picture looked fine, only the colors were a bit different than the paint. maybe you can have a look at the 'canvas' and imagine what it would like if you painted it to see if that would be a painting you would be happy with?
@@CarlijnWeirdArt hello, yes I did look at the canvas and I decided to return it because it was too risky to go ahead and spend all this time and then regretting it. There were too many what looked to be identical kits but by different seller/manufacturers, all of them having different prices for the same thing and Excessive shipping costs. But I’m hopeful that my “ship paint-by-numbers” will be okay when it arrives. I’m still enquiring confirmation for the name of that ship (HMS Excalibur)
Girl did better. The guys' was rushed. You can tell by less detail. But they are both still very nice. It is great for his first paint by numbers! Kudos to you both and great video!
Hmmm good question! The easy thing about the paint by number is that you don't have to sketch out everything. This ship had a lot of details so it would have taken a lot of time to design it. So I think the paint by number is faster for this one. Also because it would have taken me a long time to blend everything if I would have painted it normally :)
I liked your video and I have a suggestion for improvement. In the beginning you lay out everything on the table and the tablecloth is very busy, which makes it hard for me to concentrate on the items you want to show. Maybe next time you could use a monochrome background. Regards from Germany :)
Good morning is there any chance can you send me a photo of your close up picture of the sail boat paper numbers of the ship I think I bought a neck of from ebay thanks if you can
Just opened a picture to paint of a tiger and every paint pot is either empty or the little paint that is in the pot is dry. What a waste of time this product is
Paint by numbers is a totally different art than painting a picture although the results are similar. PBN has its own skill set and rewards. People who enjoy those might not necessarily enjoy the total difference of painting freehand.
Las habilidades no importan ....con que no seas daltónico y no te salgas de las líneas...pinta y colorea..como entretenimiento estará bien, pero no tiene mérito ninguno el trabajo
Folded is fine and have a place. You can spray, iron and stretch it on a frame. Folded canvas are less expensive and therefore more subject matter is available.
wow you spent 62% more time on the painting than your bf. at least from my perspective, yours wasn't 62% more detailed. perhaps my eye sight is bad, but the major difference between your paintings are the front of the ship, maybe 30-40% more detailed.
Sorry but your Cons make no sense. You don't like that it takes a long while to paint something nice? Haha That's a pro in my book and well worth the money lol.. And ur 2nd con is that there's no artistic freedom? Hello, this is literally a step by step guide with numbers on where to paint. It's meant for people without any skill hahaha.
Rough canvas - you didn't prime it. As a supposed artist you should know you have to prime a canvas. The brush you used was too large thus you weren't staying within the lines and thus the reason the details look so messy. The final product could have looked far better than the results you made. What a shame. If you only took your time and not tried to rush. It's a hobby to be enjoyed, not rushed. Your results show that you were trying too hard to rush it and not take your time to enjoy the process and paint it well with some resemblance of pride in your work. I take it when you say you are an artist, you mean you picked up a brush once or twice before, or maybe more of a sketch artist.
Boy in this case is just more lazy and less patient than girl. Testosterone effect? Could be, or just a different characters.. Can you compare two girls - nub vs pro?
Hahaha well, you can be sure that I paint very differently when I make something for myself ;) just thought it wouldn't be fair to compare the two of I used far better supplies don't you think?
''it was like a thick guache like paint which dries very quickly'' it is acrylic paint people..like artist dont know weather the paint is acrylic or not and i am a teenager
Hii, the package didn't mention what type of paint it was, so I tried to describe it as detailed as possible. My experience with these paint by number sets is that they usually add gouache paints in the packages. It's a lot more water soluble than acrylic paint as you can see in the video :)
I take weeks to complete one of these but they come out freaken awesome and you gotta look real close to know it’s a paint by numbers. I also change some of the colors of paints. Like when I did starry night. I didn’t like how much white was in the background so I made it a purple. I also use a tiny brush that I shape myself and bring my color past the outside lines so when I mount these there isn’t a funny business going on.

I do all of that on the PBN projects I use. I also vary the colors and detail to match my preferences.
I prefer the guy’s sky but prefer the lady’s ship. It’s great they both painted a piece of art to grace any wall. Great review and super camerawork 🙏
