I have a tip about the brushes if you choose to buy your own. Make sure the bristles of the brush are short as they lend a lot more accuracy than brushes with long bristles. Another tip I have is make sure to twist the bristles of your brush to a point each and every time after cleaning, this will keep your brush nice and in the correct shape to paint. The last tip I have is if you make a mistake and paint over a previous color too much, you can use a wet brush to "paint away" the mistake. this only works if there is already paint down where you've made the mistake. this has helped me a LOT! : )
Thank you for the tips. I also mixed the paint with a bit of water. Thought my artwork was terrible, but looking at it from a distance made it look not that bad .😋And that gives me more confidence.😅
I loved your "nobody is going to take your invisible medal way" comment! My my moms is from Glasgow Scotland, and she says the same line ! Lol Sending lots of love from Toronto Canada and thanks for the tips. I am currently studying for my medical licensing exam and wanted to start PBN for relaxation and just peace. I have never been artistic in regards to paint or drawing so I am looking forward to this experience and your tips!
I've just started painting by number I found I naturally worked by section and number. I divided it up into four then tackle it number by number in that section
Thank you, I agree with your tips. I would add two. 1) I'm right handed so I try to start in the upper left hand corner so that I don't drag wet paint across the canvas. 2)..I like to tape my canvas down to a piece of foam board it does flatten it out, make it easy to turn so as to have a better reach and I prefer to frame the projects in poster frames, which you cannot do it you've put them on wooden stretchers.
I recently began pbn as a hobby and wanted to say thanks for posting the video! I have one tip that may help with the more intricate areas and that is to invest in watch repair glasses with an LED light. I have a pair from Amazon that we're around $35 and they have made all the difference when paired with fine detail brushes. I agree the ones that come with the kits are awful.
I'm just starting my first canvas and was so glad to find yours. I had just watched one where someone built & stretched the canvas on bars which seemed awkward to me; as you said it makes it very "bouncy" in the middle! So I will find a large enough drawing board and use the tape method which makes much more sense. I also like your tip about starting with the darks first. Overall great tips for a beginner!
That was sooo helpful. I have been doing acrylic pouring up until I came across and totally fell in love with a particular paint by numbers acrylic ‘Kit E Cat’ 🐈 acrylic painting, I had NO idea where to even start! Thank you so much for your 5 tips!!!
I already paint using acrylics but getting good subject material is a pain so I started painting by numbers saving me the time to draw my subject. I use synthetic brushes that keep their points and are middle range price and are easy to clean and maintain. I also use artist quality acrylics and if I need to I can use them if I run short of supplied paints, although you cannot get the precise colour you can mix to very near the colour you need. I also blend the joins so it gives a smoother appearance to sections of differing colours

Thank you for the tips! I just bought my 1st PBN. I was wondering if you feel it's better to have the canvas stretched on a wooden frame before starting? Or is it ok to have it stretched and framed when completed? Will the paint crack? Where is your favorite place to find frames? Hobby Lobby? Michaels? Or somewhere else? Also is there normally enough paint to make it through a painting?
I haven't really ever done a PBN with a frame so I can't really say but I do like to tape them to a sturdy board so that the canvas doesn't move. I stretched and framed a finished one on a wooden frame and it was fine, the paint didn't crack. I am from Scotland so I don't have Hobby Lobby and Michaels here. I get mine from a UK shop chain called The Range or B&M. I think they are similar to those stores anyway. I usually have extra paint left over. They tend to give you more than enough to complete the painting but it is easy enough to contact the company and explain you have ran out. This usually helps them gauge better how much paint people will need for certain ones. Hope this helps!
I started my first one last night and it was a total disaster! now I know it's because of the paint being too thick and the crappy brushes that came with the kit, hopefully I can put it right!! thank you
Great! I did PBN years ago but want to do again. Thank you for this video! Want to add, if there's paint that isn't sufficiently covering numbers, try white out pen.
Hello! Thanks for this video and the tips, helped me while making a first attempt at paint by numbers that too for this specific landscape. I've a question tho, what color are u using at 2:20 for the grey zones in your canvas? It doesn't state any number on the one I have and I'm kind of confused, because I feel the paint is not coming together, please help ♥
Usually the ones without the numbers on the pots are the ones you use with the grey areas, no number on the pot and no number on the canvas means they match. :)
I have found starting with dark colors it’s a mistake if you go over the line you can’t cover it with the lighter paints so I started with the lighter paint first and put in my dark colors last.
Any craft/value pack of brushes will do but I use the Arteza miniatures for all my PBN and my normal paintings! They are currently out of stock though arteza.co.uk/dp/detail-paint-brush-set-of-15 Maybe you could try a set from jacksons. This is also a good set and cheaper, unfortunately out of stock too :( www.jacksonsart.com/silver-brush-ultra-mini-golden-taklon-brush I would keep checking back or get them to email you when back in stock because they really are good. If you really want them quick maybe Amazon might be your best bet, not sure what country you come from so you might have to just search miniature brushes in the search bar like this: www.amazon.co.uk/s?k=miniature+brushes&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 Any one of those sets are pretty good! Hope this helps
Awesome tips..Thank you!!!! Can't wait to begin my 1st PBN...😍 Btw, How do you protect/cover your work while you take the break, of 30-45mins or overnight/ a day?
Thanks. I don't protect it, I have no pets so I'm not worried about that. I do have a kid but he is old enough not to touch stuff I'm working on, I just make sure the lids of the paint are tightly shut in the paint and I use old air tight Mason hards for my water containers so I just put the lids on so avoid getting dust in it. 😊
@@ALLJArt Thanks for the quick reply :) I don't have pets either, and old enough kids here too. But keep thinking of how to safe guard the canvas work, in case I am not able to finish it in the duration I planned. Would it be ok to cover it with a plastic sheet or towel like cloth?
Also long as the paint is dry, you can cover it with anything that works, nothing will happen to it if you don't though. What are you trying to protect it from?
If you are using acrylics, the paint dries fast and this shouldn't happen. If you put a cover on paint that is not dry, this will mess up your painting, if the painting is dry, their shouldn't be dust after a few days, it would be fine.
I just got my first paint by number in the mail today. Do you suggest I stretch it onto the frame before I paint it. Should I paint with it on an easel?
I don't use any but you can if you want to have extra protection or a different finish, like extra glossy or Matte. Can't really recommend any brands or types because I don't use them, sorry!
You could try and iron out the crease, if you are scared of burning it, iron it under a t-shirt or towel. You could also try the stretching method, soak it in water and then staple it to a sturdy board and let dry
All J Art, thank you for your video, it's very helpful! Could I get some advice from you? I bought a set that is three different canvasses and just one tray of oil paints. I like your idea of thinning the paint down. So I guess I should work on all canvasses at the same time, doing the darkest first and moving to the lighter colors? Also, I also thought I should stabilize each canvass so I bought some of that foam board to glue them on to before painting. I intended to use adhesive spray. Also, I wonder about using oils instead of acrylic paint. If you say I should use the oil paint I have, what do I use to water down the paint with? Please give me your thoughts on all this! Thank you very much! Your canvas turned out so nice! 😊
Hi, I started doing paint by numbers but kinda busy at work so I can't spend a lot of time to do it, and then the paint got dried? What should I do to rehydrate it? I've tried lukewarm water but it didn't
No I didn't prep it, you can though, if you use a gesso that dries clear, it should be OK. I didn't see a need to but it might make the paint a little easier to go on.
@@ALLJArt Thanks, that is helpful. Also, someone told me to spray the canvas with water helps. Do you think this is helpful or necessary. Thanks! I find your videos helpful.
@@TheJudipickell If you spray it with water and leave it to dry, that is called stretching the canvas, it isn't really needed in this case as most kits come pre-prepped! Hope this was helpful, any m ore questions, feel free to ask!
A quick question before I start my painting, I've noticed the pots are so small would it be enough to do the entire picture. Did you have enough to do yours.
Recently ordered a paint by number. I haven't had one of these sets since I was much, much younger. I really appreciate the input you've shared in this vid, it's gonna help in this process for sure. As a child these kits came in a box on a hard surfaced pallet. This is on a canvas, that has fold lines... can these folds be safely steamed or ironed out? Thanx much 8o)
Hey! Yeah, I ironed mine without any issues, if you are worried, you could always put a towel on top of it and iron over it like that but it should be fine. Try low setting on iron first too!
If you get any lamp and replace the bulb with a daylight (white, cool light not warm, orange) that could do it, you could also Google daylight craft lamps and a ton will come up that are pretty cheap
Can I ask a question please..I’ve been brought this adult colour by numbers book but there no colour guide🤦🏼♀️ so how am I to know what colours to use? Many thanks if you reply as can’t find an answer to this question anywhere 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
@@ALLJArt No hun..it’s not a paint by number it’s a colour by number book with tons of detail but no guide as to what colours go where🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ nightmare!!x
@@stephaniemurray1712 oh sorry I miss read that so you have to use your own supplies, it's marketed as a colour by number but there are no numbers? I remember having one of these where the colours would be listed underneath and the numbers would be on top them the numbers that correspond with the colour would be written in the actual drawing? Do you have social media, maybe send me a picture @alljart everywhere my dms are open
Can someone recommend what website is best to get one of these kits for a custom photo? There’s so many choices out there I find it really hard to choose lol any advice of the best place to go would be appreciated
What color are the gray section with no numbers suppose to be. I have a picture with gray areas, it’s abstract Michael Jackson, but not sure what color those areas are suppose to be. Thank
ALLJ Art Yes I do have one pod with no number, that’s what I was thinking but wanted to make sure, there where no instructions about it. But thank you so much.
Quick question, I’d like to sell my paint by number paintings ( the colorful animals ones) and I have no idea how to price it, any advice? Cost is : frame : $10 + painting kit ~$15 = $25 THANKS SOO MUCH!!
Sorry I miss typed, the pots that the paints are in should all have numbers and if there is a pit without numbers, that's the colour you use to go in the white or grey spaces
HI! I'm working on one that calls for mixed colors! Yikes! any tips? I'm thinking I should scoop out a bit of each color to a plate or something to mix there. Same color has to be mixed multiple ways so I don't want to do it in the cup.
Hi! When I had to do this, I just used the brush but sometimes the brush would take too much, I would use the colours for all the single ones first to make sure I had enough paint and maybe use something like a toothpick to pick up some paint then mix with the brush, if you have a tiny palette knife, that might be a good idea, too. Hope this helps! !
I was just about to place an order on Amazon for pbn and I thought I'd look for some helpful tips first. Glad I did, thanks for the tips. Do you have a suggestion for where to get brushes? Like if I order the kit on Amazon, can I place an order for brushes? Where? Which kind do I need, to not be too frustrated with the ones included in the kit? lol sorry this is my 1st time & I really would like the right tools to work with. Thanks again for all your help! Beautiful work too btw!

Yeah I didn’t think so and I think the one I ordered is oil painting I didn’t know which want to order I have not done any of them yet but I believe it is oil I didn’t think so it’s hard to know what to buy when is the first time you’ve done it thank you for getting back with me

@@ALLJArt Thanx 👋😊👍
What size paint brushes would you recommend to buy?
I actually like doing dark colors last.
That's entirely up to you, what ever way you feel best 😊
What type of light should I get for my painting?
If you get any lamp and replace the bulb with a daylight (white, cool light not warm, orange) that could do it, you could also Google daylight craft lamps and a ton will come up that are pretty cheap
Can I ask a question please..I’ve been brought this adult colour by numbers book but there no colour guide🤦🏼♀️ so how am I to know what colours to use? Many thanks if you reply as can’t find an answer to this question anywhere 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Is there no numbers on the pots and canvas? A lot of them don't come with colour guides on paper
@@ALLJArt of course yeah I’ll sort that 😉 thank you x
Can someone recommend what website is best to get one of these kits for a custom photo? There’s so many choices out there I find it really hard to choose lol any advice of the best place to go would be appreciated
I haven't only tried one custom on before and it was terrible. I am getting another one sent to me soon so I will let you know how that goes.
Thanks will use your tips
What color are the gray section with no numbers suppose to be. I have a picture with gray areas, it’s abstract Michael Jackson, but not sure what color those areas are suppose to be. Thank
ALLJ Art Yes I do have one pod with no number, that’s what I was thinking but wanted to make sure, there where no instructions about it. But thank you so much.
I received mine and i have one color that is to thick.. any suggestions..thanks
How long did u take to complete the painting?
Really well done.....thank you
I always start with the lighter colors. Leaving the accented lines for last. Especially blacks. But to each their own
When painting, by number or not. You should always start with dark colors and go to the lightest.
Quick question, I’d like to sell my paint by number paintings ( the colorful animals ones) and I have no idea how to price it, any advice? Cost is : frame : $10 + painting kit ~$15 = $25 THANKS SOO MUCH!!
I started my first one a few weeks ago and found some with no numbers on them, is this an error or are they to be left blank? 🤔
If there is a pit with a white grey or black circle, they usually go in the white or grey spaces in the painting
@@ALLJArt Hi, thanks for replying I don't have a clue what I'm doing ... not sure what ur answer means 🤔 haha x
I am doing the same thing but struggling to figure out the easiest way to scoop and mix…..any ideas?
Mine has just 8 colors and I have spots like 11/45 like I have to make that color from these two colors, I don't like that tho 😒
Yeah, that's exactly what it means! I'm lucky enough to not have run into too many of those. Try to enjoy though, colour mixing can be so fun!
are particular brands better than others?
I was just about to place an order on Amazon for pbn and I thought I'd look for some helpful tips first. Glad I did, thanks for the tips. Do you have a suggestion for where to get brushes? Like if I order the kit on Amazon, can I place an order for brushes? Where? Which kind do I need, to not be too frustrated with the ones included in the kit? lol sorry this is my 1st time & I really would like the right tools to work with. Thanks again for all your help! Beautiful work too btw!
Thanks for the helpful tips!
Ty
you are welcome!
Thanks for posting!! Some great tips here
Thank you for making this video! I’ve been painting by numbers for years and never thought of looking up tips here on TH-cam until today. Do you hang or display your work?

did you have to mix any of the paints with this kit?
I think mine is oil paint can you still add a little water I haven’t got it yet when I do this will be my first one so I would appreciate any tips thanks
Yeah I didn’t think so and I think the one I ordered is oil painting I didn’t know which want to order I have not done any of them yet but I believe it is oil I didn’t think so it’s hard to know what to buy when is the first time you’ve done it thank you for getting back with me
May i just ask if how many days you paint it, t y
You paint fast!👍🏻🙂
Yes it’s a nice video!👍🏻🙌
Can you tell me where a good place to get these kits?
Colorful 365 Amazon as well
I'm doing the same paint by number but some of the sections aren't numbered and I'm not sure what to do with them?
There should be a tub without a number on it, use that
@@ALLJArt thank you! Mine didn't come with instructions 😅
