You know what is so incredible to me? that back when this was filmed if you wanted to learn Gracie jiu jitsu, you had to travel either to California or Brazil. Now, 30 FUCKING years later YOU STILL HAVE TO TRAVEL TO CALIFORNIA to the Gracie academy because all you get on every corner are McDojos showing you how butt scoot your way into a berimbolo or de la something or other guard and win an IBJJF tournament. I have practiced what has come to be known as Brazilian jiu jitsu for going on 15 years now and ask me how many times an instructor has addressed how to handle a punch.....ZERO, NONE, NOT ONCE in fifteen years, in several gyms that I have trained and visited throughout the years!!! It blows my mind, it really does!

Now, my 15 year old daughter has been training for 6 years with a very good instructor who won the PanAm games in her weight class. However, my daughter never learned the "old school" stuff. I taught her and she loved it. Thank you for the video.

I think the basics are what made this stuff so good in the first place. The athleticism and finishes are insane now but I much prefer the stuff that considers you might also have to defend violent punches while transitioning. A few punches to the face or back of the head changes everything

Zeek Banistor of course but he still beat very tough guys who were much larger. They were martial artists and fighters, not just some random dude. The ufc was handpicked for the Gracies no doubt, but it was to prove which martial art was the best...granted Royce vs Oleg Taktarov, Don Frye or Marco Russ, now that wouldn’t have been very easy and he may have taken an L

I agree with the sentiment that much Sport BJJ has often obscured the self-defense origins of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu through a lack of emphasis. I also agree that some "techniques" are not advisable in an actual fight. Additionally, many of the so called "old-school" techniques are as valid today as they have ever been and many are still taught in sport-oriented schools - granted without much, if any, acknowledgement of their self-defense origin or application. I think this is where self-defense oriented folks rightfully object. On the other hand, it must be also be acknowledged that Sport BJJ has advanced the application of the self-defense basics and often corrected mistakes/oversights through the pressure-testing crucible of competition. For example, how many of you would still try to pass closed guard by sticking one arm between someone's legs while holding their bicep with the other arm (AKA: The "Gracie Gift" seen at 1:03:38) ? If you did that now you be triangled mercilessly, or maybe they would go the other way with an omoplata, or maybe underhook your standing leg with their uncontrolled right arm and hit a flower sweep to mount. All of the responses I suggest are contributions to the art that came out of applying the underlying principles in a sport context rather than as specific "self-defense" step-by-step "techniques". Moreover its clear that this application of "principles" in sport has made BJJ better for self-defense in the process. To be clear: BJJ is about underlying principles not techniques and you can learn the underlying principles through both sport and through self-defense focused training. Indeed, a balanced emphasis on both applications is probably best. For that reason, I always say - teach ALL the Jiu Jitsu including takedowns, defenses to strikes, self-defense oriented reactions for things like headlocks that no sport practitioner would do, AND teach Sport techniques whose purpose is to safely refine application of the underlying principles in full-contact sparring - be that in class or tournaments. When it comes to Sport or Defense ... Its not one or the other - its all of the above. For most average practitioners, Sport BJJ is a great way to prepare for the adrenaline, fear, and violence of action in a real fight and competition is the best method to prepare for actual combat application of BJJ techniques short of a cage fight or picking real fights on a regular basis for training purposes.

    • @garybolenable

When this tape was released the UFC was still going on with Royce. I do not know about the Torrence school how things were taught. But, I was at another California Gracie brother school not Rickson. Who very high rank who's one of two main instructors taught me a wrong escape to an arm bar which I did not know any better at that time. What I was taught would have put me in arm bar. They were very secretive with escapes. This was around UFC 2 era. So in my opinion traps were put in so you get caught. Especially since people they were going to fight buy these tapes. They are not dumb. But, for me it was taught in person. These guys today that have BJJ techniques just handed to them with internet and now all schools teach openly because they have too are very lucky because that is not how it was when I learned.

What's more, even if he doesn't land a submission, the guy on bottom can easily go for double-sleeve sweeps and transition to mount from there. I guess if you manage to trap the guy's knee that might prevent the traingle, but still it's a super risky move.

There are always counters to every move. But interesting story for you. I was a seminar with Rorion and Royce around 1994 right after UFC 2!! They were showing the basic pass and some said exactly the same thing and Royce asked anyone to triangle him at the seminar and he did the move on anyone who asked, no one, including one very good grappler, could triangle him! Now, it probably would be slightly modified. Leg on shoulder pass was my #1 pass for about 25 years so I know quite about it! It has been refined. But a;so remember the context of this early video - fighting relatively untrained people. It was so new back then in North America!
