I flew there in summer 2013 with norwegian. We left oslo around midnight, and arrived in complete daylight at around 3 am in longyearbyen. It was the most quietest and peaceful places I have visited. Even in summer we had light snow on some of the days.

How cool to see Longyearbyen again from the air. I was luck to be offered sit in the cockpit already back in 1979, travelling alone as a schoolboy. Since then, I went to Svalbard twice - and still occasionally using flight simulators. This kind of trip should be on the bucket list for any adventurer.

Like this guy, I was privileged enough to have a cockpit ''jump seat'' - view too, but many years ago. It was a short while before 9/11 of course, on a flight from Manchester to Ibiza and back. My cousin was a young Boeing 757 first officer with the then Britannia airways. He arranged it especialy, including all the officialdom and red tape. He captains a Boeing 787 Dream-liner now for Jet-Star back in Australia, where he grew up.
Its an experience that many a layman never gets to have, obviously nowadays. Its worlds apart from the more mundane feeling being sat back in the main cabin.
Your soon able to realise the amount of professionalism and technical competence that a pilot possesses, not to mention the responsibility they command for the safety of the aircraft and all its passengers. But the view and the thrill you get being sat right there with the crew is truly amazing.
Watching 'pilots eye view' video's like this one really brings back the feeling I experienced all those years ago. This fella is one lucky guy to have flown 'up front' like I did. Just a great video, thank you.

This was such a special episode, I was just remembering this today. Absolutely beautiful with the views and the music, you can really sense the magic. And just incredible that you got to be in the cockpit. What a memorable experience. I had the dual-purpose of coming back here to see what the aircraft and origin airport for the flight was, because I want to recreate it too. :)

It's gorgeous, but you're best off mixing in several adventures when there as the main town, Longyearbyen, is tiny. If exploring abandoned villages, sailing around chasing polar bears and whales, and husky-sledding sound like your idea of fun in summer, I warmly recommend the place (and indeed am hopefully going back for a second visit this year after being up there in 2019).

I ended my career after 16+ years working for a hydraulics group, built one off custom hydraulic units and the machinery they powered up for toe offshore oil and gas industry. It was a very interesting job, I loved it. Got to travel out to the rigs and platforms guite a bit. I always counted the helicopter rides as a big bonus, just love flying.....

Hi dan, i've watched many of your video but this one is my favorite video of yours. This is not about flashy and expensive first class video but this is more than that. You are very lucky to be seated on the cockpit and see those breath taking views. This video worth miliions of views than those flashy airplane review and kudos for you to add those great background music. Keep up on your great video dan. You are one of the best avgeek reviewers out there.

Awesome trip Dude. I was amazed at the amount of snow and glaciers that still exist in that part of the world. Summer there is a bit cooler than the lower 48. Glad you had an opportunity to ride the jump seat. You got to see what the folks up front do.
The views out the front windows can be - Spectacular!
    Cheers ...

I'm not one usually to comment, but this was a great piece you've posted here. So beautiful, and so unique. The airport reminded me a bit of USH, which although probably a little larger is basically a runway with only either sea or mountains depending which way you look. And I guess it's the southernmost airport in the world (or at least regularly scheduled service). If you haven't already gone, I recommend you do!

I can't wait to see the rest of your video; the pilots are prepping for take off; I'm almost as excited as if it were me going! Wonder if you'll see my comment as it's 3 years since you posted this video. 😊
EDITED TO ADD: Your video confirmed my fascination with Svalbard even more, it is so beautiful and amazing, really touching to see what a very special place it is, your video was great and I bet you have amazing photos too! I'm subbing to your channel too. :) Thank you!

Back in the 1990s when my dad was working in NYC and my mom was still in college in Maine, he would fly up every week to visit her at school on the Trump shuttle. He somehow ended up on the same plane that my mom’s stepfather was flying and he invited my dad into the cockpit for the flight. My dad said it was the most incredible and memorable experience he’s had in his whole life, so I guess this must be what that was like!

I’m from Sweden so SAS is also my national airline. We fly with them every year from Newark, NJ to Copenhagen, Denmark to visit southern Sweden. Right now, the route is flown using either an Airbus A330 or A340. However, SAS will eventually start to fly the Airbus A350-900 on this route and I am SUPER EXCITED about that! Bon voyage!

I went to Cambridge Bay, Canada although they're "similar" towns as far as bing arctic communities Longyearbyen seems more "modernized" and "touristy." I hope to visit soon! I also really like airline miles credit cards the signup bonuses are great and everyday purchases add up. For American customers I recommend the United Millage Plus card because in addition to the miles it offers sky club passes which in itself pays for the yearly card fee.

Great video and narration, well done. I don't live in Europe, but would like to be able to visit someday and see some of the really northern reaches. I probably won't be able to, so I appreciate video documentaries like this. And I'd love to be able to fly in the cockpit of a 737 anywhere at least once.
