Woodworker here, who's getting more into prop making with foam, plastics, etc. Remember that wood is a natural product. It will expand and contract based on the humidity and temperature of its surroundings. Most woodworkers would recommend letting new lumber acclimate to your shop for a week or two depending on moisture content. Once you've let your wood dry, flattened it (jointer/planer/table saw) and then made your prop, you can stave off future warpage with some good coats of paint/sealer/etc.

The blade on this look soooooo much better than foam swords. Doesn't have that chunkiness that makes most cosplay swords look so blatantly fake. Also loving the pitted effect. Might have to use that technique myself on some of my own props.
I'm actually working on mod'ing a toy sword for an anime cosplay. I am wishing I had just built it from scratch after getting it and watching this. I probably would have tried to do the hollow grind, which is why I likely would have failed. Love the Ghostbuster mash up.

Watching your videos on making wooden blades because I am trying to make a pair of daggers for my sister for a costume at the Renaissance Faire on the weekend of the 12th of August this year which is gonna be in Snohomish WA. I tried making the core of the blades out of thing plywood and they are rigid, but the thin foam (like 1mm or so) I have on top to add some bulk wants to tear more than sand, so I'm looking into other ways to make the daggers, I was going to make them out of foam with wood cores for the blades, but I might just make them out of wood completely. Also, your painting tips and tricks have helped a lot as well as other techniques, I painted some boot knives for her costume, two foam flintlock pistols from Amazon, Steampunk Goggles and a winged helmet from Amazon, and they look great. So thank you and many of the other prop makers I watch (Odin Makes, Adam Savage's Tested and Try to Finish Something,) for those tips and tricks.
10:40 Sanding sealer is just some finish with a soap agent added to it. You don't need it really. Any primer or finish wil do the same, just make sure it's something that'll work with your later paint job of course. Thin coat, sand, repeat a couple of times. What it does is a) make loose fibers stand up a little, making it easier to sand them away, and b) seal the rest of the fibers in, like any other primer does. A French polish is build up like that. Thin coat of shellac/oil mixture, sand, repeat. That's how they did those super glossy finishes back in the day. Bonus points for the chatoyance or cat's eye effect.
6:28 Bevel, not fuller. A Fuller in this context is the so called "blood groove" (that isn't a blood groove btw) which lightens a sword much like an I- beam. Which the nazgul sword doesn't have.
This is why I use wood for all of my swords. It just looks so good. And boy do I have some tips for you guys to make it go a lot faster and easier on you if you want to hear them lol

35:13 lol that's some serious overengineering, love it. But you could have just used thin rope. That's what raisers on actual swords are typically made with.
The tapering both from the center line and that creates the actual edges of a blade is just bevels, not a fuller. Fullers are the grooves cut down along the length of the blade, generally to reduce weight of the steel in places where it will not affect the strength of the blade, and quite often just for aesthetic purposes.
little tip: if you want to straigten your wood you can also glue two slaps on to eachother. And for extra orientation you can spray the sides you are gluing black, that way there is a straigt line all the way throu the inside.

To accentuate the pitting, try using a dremel to make little rounded cut-outs; then you can apply glue and paint over to lessen the texture of the dremel.
I did this with the morgul blade but I used extra thin super glue on it to care the pitting and smooth out the grain. It worked so well! Made sure I did it outside with face protection though 🤣
For doing something like this with foam, I think using Whatthe foam or however it's said could probably work to make a more rigid blade that is thinner than standard EVA foam. Odin Makes uses it for his blades quite often, it's stronger and more rigid than regular foam. And for the core use a graphite rod to keep it straight. Odin has made a lot of nice blades that look great and aren't all thick and chunky. Just saying this because Odin has mentioned that some cons won't let certain prop materials inside, so foam is a safe way to ensure you can bring your prop in.
Tip: When trying to wrap metal wire around something as tightly as possible, wrap the wire around the object in the OPPOSITE orientation that the wire coil was originally wound.
I did the rings on a wood sword awhile ago, I found that wrapping string or yarn repeatedly around the handle made it more comfortable to hold but still gave great results after it was wrapped in leather!
This reminds me that I need to finish my Witch King of Angmar costume. I have the helmet, mace, and sword all 3d printed. Just need to finish those and make the gauntlets and cloth parts.
Speaking of Adam Savage. Are you still part of the Tested Team? I only saw you do a couple of things with them after it was announced and it was I a couple of years ago I think. Did the pandemic make you have to drop out from the team?
I'm still part of the team, I just haven't been able to fly to SF during the pandemic. I just filmed a little something for them yesterday though, so look forward to that.

If you have access to a controlled environment type of room then you can steam the board and clamp it flat(straight) then let it dry in the controlled room with high heat, no humidity. It's just as good as if the board was made straight.
Because you added pockets for texture it would've been fairly easy to paint it by using washes or contrast paint to get a more realistic effect where it's only collecting grit and grim in the pockets.
Bill could you do a pair of Vi's gauntlets from Arcane? If you've haven't seen it, it's an absolutely incredible League of Legends story on Netflix that was incredible. Highly recommend and you will want to make something from it when your done. Love the videos. Thanks for the entertainment!

Damn! Considering how much sanding and shaping goes into this, I think I'd rather just use some epoxy clay for the cross guard and plastic sheet for the blade. I don't have the patience to sand that much!
