    Thanks for another great video. Loving watching these - informative but delivered in a relaxed way. Question: I'm a runner that rows as a cross-training tool. Will often do rows like this one - 40 to 60 minutes at consistent pace for general fitness. i noticed that doing the same piece (duration and pace) at 22 SPM is harder for me than at 26 SPM ( heart rate gets higher at 22). Should I stick with the 26 (where I am more efficient) or row them at 22 so I am working harder? LWT - 70 kgs/5'10 male. Thanks.

      Dean Clapham the whole idea of the low rate is so you have places to go. By that I mean, if you can push a certain number at 20rating, you’ve got anywhere from 10-20 points of rate to your max speed and you can build to the max speed easier and over all those rates. Now this has only come from my rowing background so nothing to say you can’t tap it along at 26, but IMO I think you’ll go faster at higher rates, if you are getting a good workout and good technique at 20 first, then taking that through the ratings going up. You are right as it may feel easy, I’m not sure if your numbers are the same?? But you’ll be pulling more power/stroke at 20 than 26 I would assume.

      It’s about finding a sweet spot for you and if it’s 26 and this is what you use the machine for, then that’s awesome. I’m just working through with my own experience on the way I know can get people to PB certain distances. Mainly 2000m and above, as if we were trying to do some 1minute, or 500m PB’s, you’d have to spend a bit more time doing weights and less time on the erg.

    In a steady state training piece like this what should my target split be relative to my 2k split?

    Definitely better today than I was yesterday (or the last time I did 40+ minutes).
    Should this be around 80% MHR? That’s what I targeted, had to manage a 2% drift for the last ten minutes but managed to negative split by a few tenths....so probably could have been slightly less tentative at the beginning. Anyways, top session! Much appreciated.

    Have you thought about adding a split or picture in picture of your screen shown at the same time? It would be so interesting to see what you are seeing on ErgData.

    Without giving out your numbers. When you log into the Concept 2 logbook, how flat are your spm and split lines?

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302

      Neil Herbert rate is bang on mate. It only gives the average rate, so even if it goes up or down for a few strokes here and there, it will still say 20 on the whole lot for me. My splits today got a bit slower. Bit tired and talking too much so my average and my splits weren’t far off. If you can stay within 2s of your average that’s a good start, then we iron that out over time to try and nail the whole thing so each segment is pretty close to the overall average you get at the finish. IMO you want to be “feeling” it towards the end. So the muscles are working, lungs working, and so you are holding the good form towards the end. That way you know you went out solidly and had to maintain all the facets of the stroke and the physiology to get to the end.

      @@ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302 Thanks Eric. Need to work on my discipline a bit more. Does your Logbook chart look a flat line for the SPM and Rate? This is my chart. instagram.com/p/BvTjUF9AXRY/
      I can get the SPM on the PM5 to be relatively constant. But the chart on the Logbook is all over the shop. Is yours pretty flat?

    I find that my splits tend to get faster as the piece goes on. Would you recommend starting out quicker or taking it easier at the end?

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      adrian johnson absolutely! Ideally..... you want to be starting to struggle towards the end. So maybe you’re fitter and better than you think so if you push a bit more to start then try to hold onto that all the way

      @@ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302 Oh, I'm struggling towards the end all right! BTW, it's an honor to connect with such a legend. Please keep up the videos.

    What holder are you using for the other screen?

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      RamMount. But working with Concept2 on a new piece that can go on the erg to hold it, as currently, I’ve just jerryrigged something myself which I wouldn’t say was practical to most people if you don’t have the erg in your own garage.

    Hey Eric. Could you explain what the cue “easy carry” means? Thanks!

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Paul Diggle ok, so carry is another ‘mental picture’ of taking the handle back to the finish. So when I say carry, it’s a focus on the handle and how that comes back towards you. Is it flat? Is it smooth and a consistent acceleration? Does it stay flat on a Goodnplane? Just the little things around that. So easy carry, means to feel like the handle is coming back to you as effortlessness as possible. So these one word focus points mean a lot more that just the one word itself.

    • @OxPaul
      @OxPaul 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very useful, thank you! Clearly a lot behind these one/two word calls.

      Paul Diggle yeah I’ll get more in-depth for you around what the calls mean.

    Eric, I like using the machine without shoes especially on long steady state pieces and I’ve had issues with the heals hurting on the regular footplate heal strap. How did you rig up a durable/more comfortable alternative to the default heal strap?

    • @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302
      @ericmurray-kiwipairindoorr2302  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thomas Lowery well you could cut something up and tape it on there. I use the 3M brown Physio strapping tape. I’ll show online for the next video. You should be able to see if on the heel straps before I start. So maybe if that doesn’t work for you, then some sort of cushioning and tape which won’t slip?
