Did this one this morning, it a great row and was pretty touching to hear the back story of the location and pretty funny to hear it was "take two". Glad to have "rowed" in your Mum's garden. Thanks John
I liked this row the best of the long rows. The variation in stroke rate and pace made it fly by. I especially liked the recovery sections. It showed me that I don't have to stop to get ready for the next more intense segment. Thanks for rowing it, twice. Also, condolences on your mother's passing. She must have been looking down on you favorably, judging from the two consecutive days of good weather in December.
It's funny, I don't usually do rows with so many changes. It's almost like a spin class really - but it's the advantage of these longer times, that I was able to do that. Although, I don't think I'll do it for the 3 hour row (if I get round to it). And thanks for your kind words about mum. She'll have been looking down on me, Marlboro in hand, wondering what the heck I was doing...
Brilliant row .. thank you John .. really helps me keep my form and pace in check ..sorry to hear of your Mum’s passing that must of been an emotional row to do in her memory ✨
That's great that it helped. And yes, it was tough to row (especially after messing up the recording the day before!) But I'm pleased I did it, so it's like an archive of what the garden looked like.
#taketwo Having just upgraded to PM5 with an iPad holder as part of the new ErgData app, it’s awesome to be able to row along to these sessions, rather than just watching them (as “research”) on my sofa! Many thanks John.
#taketwo my second time doing this brilliant session, which offers so much and flies by. I really felt the connection during the 28s and the second 2spm set, and think this is a perfect workout. Thanks John.
Merry Christmas John, to you and your family and all the other Rowers out there in the cyberworld! Wishing everyone a Happy, Healthy and Injury free rowing year.
That was officially the longest I’ve rowed in 1 continuous effort. The variation definitely helps! Thank you for sharing abt the loss of your mom. I hope you’re taking the chance to mourn
That's amazing!! I'm so pleased I was able to get you rowing for that long. Well done!! And thanks for what you wrote about mum. Having this channel to kind of keep her alive in my memories from time to time has been amazing.
Aw, thanks. I'm pleased you liked this one. If you want to go back to the Pete Plan - my 2K plan is loosely based on the main Pete Plan - but continues the same idea, or RowAlong videos with me. And you get the chance to laugh at my beard and hair at the same time!
#taketwo - really enjoyed that and pleased that sticking to the timings and pace still made this feel like a mid session. Especially happy that the 26spm and 24spm felt within a comfortable limit se one time around. Real question is which showtune would you sing to win a race?
Just completed this and loved #taketwo. Found the 5min sections at 26spm.pretty challenging, to be honest, but the pace changes certainly help to keep things interesting on these long rows. Thanks.
Yeah, if the pace is up in the slightest, this definitely becomes a MID tier workout. Although I think the Bottom/mid/tier thing gets a bit woolly once the duration goes above 60 anyway. Really pleased you enjoyed this one. It'll always be one of my favourites because of the location - but it's a heck of a good row too!!
@@rowalong I didn’t like to mention that part! It must have been a tough one to make. I admire your fortitude in persevering with it. I’m sure your Mum would have been incredibly proud of how you help people and that you used her back garden to do so!!
Hi John, thanks for this one, and sorry to hear about your mum and appreciate even more you sending me the book in October as you must have been going through such a lot at that time. Still doing the 5k plan (2nd time round) but thought I would do a longer row, must say it was really good and as you said time went quickly and really good training for my longer on the water Gig rowing. Thanks again for all you advice, effort and sharing your knowledge
It's a pleasure. Making these rows through everything that happened really helped. It was a couple of hours a day when I wasn't really able to think about how sad I felt - and also stopped me from being surrounded with everything that comes from a 'project management' point of view when someone dies. As for this row - it really is a time flier. The 75 is much the same actually, with the 18/20/24 changes. The trick is breaking it down into chunks.
@@edwatkinson3178 Thanks. I know I don't have the high viewer numbers of the Alpha TH-cam coaches, but what I hope is that the people who DO come back to my videos are here because they click with my schtick! Hope you're having a good holiday. All the best for 2021...
Nice workout! At higher rates I had no problems with keeping the desired pace, at 18 spm it was quite hard, so I tried to go as fast as I could. At the begining there was no problem, but later, in the second half of training it was a challenge. But I made 17218 m during this row. And, as usually, thank you for your efforts!
Yeah, after 70 minutes of the intervals, I can understand if you were feeling it tough doing the 18's at the start, it would continue to be tough towards the end! It's interesting though how different rowers respond to the different rates. Some folks love the power output of the low rate rows, whereas others need the higher rates to get into the speed groove.
Can't believe you did that twice on consecutive days. I can hit the 2K targets on all but the 18's (which don't feel much like a recovery when I do). The zombie arms reference is gold. Thanks for your efforts.
That's interesting. I wonder if it's about getting the connection right at the front? One of the reasons for such a low rate is that it does reveal those issues quite well - whereas the higher rates you can kind of mask with the fact you're taking more strokes. And yes, I was quite chuffed with myself when I thought about the Zombie. More family friendly that the carrot!
I definitely use the momentum from higher rates for better compression at the catch. Still struggle with vertical shins. Perfect storm of a gut and poor flexibility. Looking for post-it’s now
@@DanielWBates - Just make sure your feet aren't strapped in too high, but also be aware of your posture too. Up on your sitbones rather than back on your backside.
@@rowalong I just spent the better part of an hour attempting to lower the footplates on my waterrower that I have read are mounted notoriously high. Long story short it's not possible without a router. I did lower the heels are far as possible and will jury rig a tow strap as it now misses my feet entirely. Feels much easier to gain the correct shin position now - thanks.
@@DanielWBates Oh, I didn't realise it wasn't a simple procedure! You'll get another cm lower (or so) if you row in socks too. Well done for not giving up!

You’ll get there. It’s only 20 minutes more. And don’t worry about feeling exhausted after this one. 70 mins is a long time for anyone to spend on the erg.

You too Gladys. So far, this is the longest row I've added here, but it felt like the shortest one of the long rows. I hope you have a fantastic Christmas. :0)
#take2 you were absolutely right, this row flew by and didn't feel any longer than the 65 min. The hardest part was keeping it at 2k+20 when transitioning to 18spm; that took some discipline. Thanks again
Yeah, it's weird how the drop to 18 is the toughest part of this row. That control element is really important. Especially on the back half of the row. Glad you enjoyed it.
I'll be back, Lets call this one my mulligan today. Kept pace til the half way mark and lost my oompf . I will finnish it later. haha. try again later.
@@rowalong Trade yah reasons for it. I still got my kidney stones and they decided to pay me a visit the last few days. All non essential surgery is canceled
Hi, just got my rowing machine, although have used one at gym before, My question is, what benefits do you get from a 70 min row , that you don’t get from say A 30 min row beside the calories count, thanks.
Partly it depends on what you're training for. If you're looking to perform well on a 30minute time trial, a 10Km race, or even a 60minute time-trial, you need not only time in the saddle but to expose yourself to some of the hardship you'll feel in those tests. (And to be fair, just rowing for 70 minutes is a good 'hardship' test for a 30 minute row). If you just want to burn off some calories, as long as you're putting in some effort, and not just limping up and down the rail, then obviously, 70 minutes of rowing will take care of that (you'll probably burn around 700-800kcal) But in amongst both of those benefits is the base-fitness side of things. The foundation of your system to be able to row. Long slow rows builds up your energy system, and create more mitochondria. Mitochondria are the oxygen burning power plants of cells so the more you have the more energy the cell can produce per second, and hence the harder you can train - and the longer your row and the slower rates, the more you make. So this means that when it does come to training for a 2000m / 5000m race etc, your energy system, your fitness foundation is packed full of energy. And finally, spending a good chunk of time on the machine gives you a chance to focus on your technique - especially when fatigue sets in, it's really imporant to have a good, energy efficient, injury free technique. And a row like this gives you that opportunity.
Thanks John, did this one today, I know your mom was there in spirit... I seem to have the hardest time with the 18 SPM bits, I have to really concentrate on the leg drive to meet the pace, got the HR up to 160 for some of the harder parts, max is around 175. Hopefully you spent Christmas Eve with your family instead of rowing, even if it was just sitting down for a rubbishy movie! 😉 #taketwo
@@fisherguy - I think I managed to do both. I didn't record the 75 on Christmas eve, but I seem to remember doing a Row/Bike/Ski session instead. Lots of fun. Glad you enjoyed this one - the 18's are something that if you're not used to doing - take a bit of time. But the slower rate does give you that time to work on the technique you need to really hang off the handle and get the power out at that low rate. But don't worry - as long as you're not OVER cooking the stroke pace, and you're only a few seconds off, you can take time to develop.
Did this one this morning, it a great row and was pretty touching to hear the back story of the location and pretty funny to hear it was "take two". Glad to have "rowed" in your Mum's garden. Thanks John
