I used resistance bands for 9 months during COVID. I was amazed how weak my squat and deadlift were when I went back to the gym. There's alot to be said about pushing raw iron.
Yeah man, bands are infinitely better than nothing but not nearly as good as weights. It's pretty much impossible to have a good resistance curve, it will be too light or too heavy at some point in the lift
Have to say that some people have issues with free wieghts. At 51 years old with psoriatic arthritis, I have some exercises I choose bands because I am too sore and achy with free wieghts. However, I would say free wieghts are the gold standard and bands are the acceptable alternative! Thanks for another great video!
I do love bands for shoulder training. Their peak tension is at the point of the lift where its hardest for front, side and rear delt raises. Feels way better than weights
At 50 I haven’t replaced free weights with resistance bands but definitely incorporated more cable versions of the same exercises and my joints are thankful!
This is the common problem of people insisting one has to be better than the other. As the video points out, sometimes variations aren't necessarily better than others, but simply another means of accomplishing the same goal.
"I don't think you know what you just said." This, right here, is probably the cause of at least half the problems in the world. Words spoken without thought.
Asprey has some “non-traditional” viewpoints to put it kindly. Only time I use resistance bands is when I’m traveling and the accommodations don’t have a gym with weights.
Bands' *ramping* variable resistance is too extreme. For bands to enable full-range reps, the bottom tension must be a virtual zero. If bottom resistance is worthwhile, full-range reps are impossible to complete.
I mean, I love resistance bands for some things, they can sometimes assist or create tension in a way that neither free weight or cable can, but... 🤨🤦🏼♂️
Great video. But Layne, please! I am also waiting for you to make a video on Rucking or Weighted Vest Training based on your systematic review of ressearch. Specifically as to how may or may not contribute to enhanced body composition(lean muscle mass and or fat loss) when paired with resistance training. Also if this can increase 1 rep max. And downsides : short term/long term (i.e., postural issues, over training, etc., ) Lots of “Anec Evidence” seems to make claims tha I am not sure are fully supported by research. And on a related note and no offense, but your BroMance Buddy, Peter Attia is into its alleged bebefits big time. In fact, his gruelling rucking sessions are in addition to and apart from his regular resistance training, LISS cardio, and HIIT sessions. He considers Rucking Supplementary to that.
The funny part is Jaquish keeps citing studies of COMBINING bands with weights as proof that bands are better because he knows few will actually read the studies. They never really match what he claims more often than not. Furthermore, he finally broke out of the only 1 set needed and revised his program into multiple set routines. Many of his followers think he's a genius when he is now just doing what every successful lifter has already been doing. They couldn't do it though until his "research" confirmed it was better. HA
Dr. Jaquish likes to cherry pick research that "fits" his marketing purposes. That said, resistance band training _can_ be very effective for hypertrophy if done right, and are also great for special training modalities like explosive training.
I agree with Layne's points. Personally I found an ideal scenario combining bands and kettlebells. As this combination allows to obtain an optimal resistance profile, having tension in both the lenghtened and shortened positions.
How would they not feel gravity/consider being in gravity is bad given the evolution was happening for a couple of billion years only within gravity. Crazy logic
I own the x3 from jaquish. From the beginning i knew his 3x gains in 1 set was bullshit. But it has been helpful for workouts at home. Just need to do 6 sets instead of the claimed 1😂. Also extremely overpriced
There is a place where bands are better. I had to travel to several locations across the US every few days. They fit in my backpack and the overhead compartment better than an Olympic bar and plates. Other than that, the argument is ridiculous.
So if our bodies are so afraid of gravity, how on earth do we survive in a daily basis without a resistance a band? 🤔🤔🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ Am I missing something?😂
@@the_notorious_bas I'm afraid Norton and Biolayne are afraid to receive a negative wave now that Trump won and the popular sentiment is all about him. That's sad because this is probably the biggest WTF ever with RFK being so popular and influential. Hence so dangerous. I am afraid that Norton doesn't want to stand against a certain side of online communication which involves RFK, Rogan, Huberman and similar. I keep hearing so much bullshit from them but never an answer from Norton. I'd love him to answer this.
Probably because Layne Norton is a stereotypical dude bro when it comes to politics. He has the stereotypical pick yourself up by your boot straps libertarian brain rot men have typically. It's good for motivation for sf improvement, but not for understanding government or politics.
A big problem with band only exercises is the movement is easy at the start of the rep and harder at the end so it’s like you are doing 1/2 reps. To help offset this I recommend higher reps like 15
@ I train at home and have found that bands work only for certain exercises, standing band crunches are good, they work good for rear Delt flies, I tried them for pulldowns, and they did not seem to work so well for the reason you mentioned, being weak in the lengthened position
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW - maybe I need to have my UFC fighter and other professional MMA athletes use bands lol. JUST KIDDING!!!!!!!
I agree that post is idiotic, but one of the positive elements bands have that you/Layne missed is their lack of inertia, so the speed of the rep is a non-issue -- whereas it is with weight. Still... the tweet is fucking ridiculous.

my muscles are terrified of gravity - I have to give them a stern but kind talking to every time I do free weights 😂😂😂
Gravity, the world’s greatest oppressor keeping everyone down.
I use bands a bit for warmups sometimes, just makes the joints feel good before lifting with barbells or dumbbells.
I use them for warmup and end-of-workout finisher for the almighty pump! 💪
It was so difficult to not laugh out loud in the bus while on the way to work, this just made my morning even better 😂

I’m glad I have no idea who Dave is.
Picture an anti-aging guy who looks 20 years older than he actually is. And wears red glasses all the time.
Let me guess ..Dave is selling his own gravity defiant bands
I'd buy them but I have high ceilings and I wouldn't want them to float up there and get stuck.
