I always had this theory with my siblings that in STD 1 its a young kid who wins a hot wheels contest and then he builds all those crazy ass tracks (as shown in the intro) in STD 2 we made a theory that its the same kid grown as an adult and his track pieces are all missing. so to relive the glory days he builds a bunch of tracks out of dirt and spare pieces he has lying around.
Part of what I love about this channel is that it exists in it's own universe. The rest of the Internet is in a fuss about No Man's Sky and CS:GO drama while we're all here watching a review of a Hotwheels game expansion that won't run on a modern system. Something really cozy and refreshing about that. Also, that 3D engine looks dank.
MR LGR , you are the most nostalgia I have ever felt, except the time I smelled my family home smell on a dark corner of my hand me down couch . P.s can you review jedi knight 2
My main computer still runs xp sp3 and my laptop runs 98 se... I do have a cheapo windows 7 netbook for internet. But for gaming it's a Pentium 4 and an 850mhz celeron for me.. well. And the IBM model 95... For windows 3.11 and dos stuff... Haha
I don't even know if I have to qualify it as such, but Velocity X was really good for a Hot Wheels game. I sunk way too many hours into it as a *teenager* on PS2
Glad to see these stunt track driver games are getting some light again. I remember playing them in the early 2000's, being amazed by the (then) impressive FMV tracks.
being an avid fan of both HWSTD and HWSTD2 had me stoked when I saw the trailer for Hot Wheels Unleashed and I've had it since it's release. let me tell you, it's exactly what a remaster of HWSTD would look and feel like. I suggest you check it out as soon as you can because I've been playing it religiously
I'm the same way. As fan of the Stunt Track Driver games, I definitely think of the Unleashed games as remasters (or remakes) of STD 1 & 2 in a way. I even started to wonder: What if Unleashed and/or Unleashed 2 was Stunt Track Driver 3? Matter of fact, imo the Track Builder in the Unleashed games filled a void in me that the Stunt Track Driver games left. Unlike the STDs track editor (which I understand since it was supposed to be simple for kids), The Unleashed builders lets you create tracks any way you want, even in the in-game track style of STD. I even managed to recreate some of the tracks from STD 1. So I wholeheartedly agree.
I remember playing this for hours on windows xp back in the day, I totally forgot about it and at the time had no clue that it was just a full motion video back drop till I watched this video. Very nostalgic 10/10.
If you build a loop in the custom builder and drive into the back of the loop where it meets the ground, you wedge into it and clip through the floor. Pretty fun to do if you still have the game lying around, which I just might.
I get a weird mixed feeling watching this game, on one hand your initial reaction is "Eww FMV" but on the the other hand the FMV looks pretty damn smooth and well done you can't help but kind of like it. Also the create a track being in 3D is sooo strange, its like 2 totally different game engines, maybe they thought kids playing it wouldn't notice the difference.
I can also attest to not noticing the difference as a kid, I thought the whole game was 3d and the actual 3d part was just more simple becuase of it being an editor. Didn't help that we probably had a really crappy PC so it might be looked similar at the low res
I found my old copy of this game, but i don't have a windows 98 PC so i really wanted to see you review this game. I'm so happy you did, and your timing is impeccable. I literally found it a week ago.
I actually recently found both my HotWheels Stund Track Driver 1 and 2 CDs, and installed them without any issues on my Windows 10 gaming PC! They run with no stutters or errors, which I was super surprised to find. Definitely a great little bit of nostalgia to share with my pals during boring lectures in college.
I got this game on 6 discs. Each disc was a level and unlocked 2 of the 13 vehicles. After installing all 6 discs you'd get the 13th car and the track creator. Each disc was sold separately and came with a car that had a horrid decal. They also had demos for 4 Hot Wheels games: one for crashing a semi down a road, one where you raced in a office, a level from the original Stunt Track Driver and, my favorite, a game where you raced big wheeled cars in some Aztec Amazon forest.
I remember having a demo CD and this was a part of it. The others I remember being Hot Wheels Crash, Mechanix, and that one where you race around an office whose name I forget. They were all fun.
I remember that there was this game you could play on the Hot Wheels website that was essentially a full 3D version of stunt track driver, except with powerups, upgrades, and ONLINE MULTIPLAYER with up to like 20 people I think. It was a hell of a lot of fun. I think it used the same engine as this game's track editor.
Man do I remember this. I never could get past the map with the swamp/pond/frogs/whatever, but I loved it. Never really messed around with the track editor though. This was just such a cool game to me.
Seeing that Hot Wheels car still in the box makes me think of my old Army Men game that came with an Army Men figure in each of the top corners. Being a young kid I of course took them out and added them to my Army Men collection which is long gone, and now my box is incomplete.
Fun fact; The track creator engine was actually used in the future for the Planet Hot Wheels game, as well as many other little games in the future such as Turbo Driver and other failed MMOs that were very similar to PHW.
I bought this at from a bargain bin around 2003 or 2004 (I remember that I still was in elementary school then) and oh boy, this video totally triggered nostalgia for me. One of the first games I bought myself.
The part about going back to you making generalizations about class structure cracked me up, classic LGR. Hahahaha! And for an FMV this game looks impressive and fun!
STD and STD2 were my childhood. These games, as well as that one demo for Hot Wheels Crash were all I played on my family's PC. Then, I was hooked on HotWheels Velocity . Anyone remember that game? It had open worlds to explore as well as a story and boss battles. That was the first game I ever beat. That last mission where you drive the Prototype X was insanely hard for me.
I have to say, this was the first time I've seen the Hot Wheels PC (random viewing order and all) and I was super stoked that it existed and secretly want one myself.
I know this video is over a year old but I actually have an explanation for why the track editor uses a different engine than the FMV. The track editor's engine was actually a reworked tech demo for a very similar system using different aesthetics for a minigame in the now-defunct MMO Planet HotWheels. No idea why they threw it in the game, but it was most likely because they would have to make FMV clips for every possible configuration because of the brighter environment compared to the garage of the first game and thus it was easier to rework the code of the minigame for the track editor... The engine btw was used for the majority of Planet Hot Wheels games, such as the Highway 35 tie-in, its various qualifiers and the multitude of multiplayer tracks.
"Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver with an open world to explore" Definitely take a look at Matchbox Emergency Patrol if you haven't already, it fits that bill exactly.
OK no, I went to this sketchy private school in grade 1 and i remember they had this game on the computers i remember we would spend hours playing this game!! It's been so long and i had no idea what it was called and eventually forgot about it but now that i see it... SO MUCH NOSTALGIA
12 years old in 98? I thought you were older. Either way I always like these types of videos and as a Hot Wheels fan I loved this. I have Hot Wheels motocross gear that I raced in.
I wonder if the 3D track editor was a side project they were working on and tested with this game. They might have included it as the editor as a tech demo of sorts.
aw man, do i remember this game! there was a time in the mid 00s where there were these collectible hot wheels sets that came with a cd for get n dirty. it wasnt the whole game though, but a fraction of the game; cleverly designed to make you whine to your parents to get the other cars in the set so you could have the whole game. it definitely worked on me, as i have the complete cd set! ah, those were the days.
This was one of my favorite games. I'll bet I put just as much time into this at that age as I did as an adult. Seriously, I'd load this game up and rush through the SP when I was crabby or bored.
Damn I loved this game so much! Still have my original copy too! I loved the environments and played it so much seeing you playing these courses I still remember the layouts and amount of combos I could fit between each jump. What a great game! I think I didn't have a problem with the outdoors because it reminded me of how I used to play with my hotwheels. Just outside everywhere, since we never really had much track. I need to break this out again!
I remember finding a copy of this when I was a kid in a good will store and hadn't even known there was a STD2. Thankfully I was with my grandma, so she spoiled me and got it. As a kid it was definitely higher on my list than STD1.
I really like your videos. They are clean, informative, and the calmness of your voice rivals that of Bob Ross. It's also nice that you have a consistent upload schedule and years quality content. I am still a fairly new subscriber so I am not familiar with your sentiments on requests, but while we are on the topic of Hotwheels games, I was wondering if you would at least consider doing a review of a PC game that I played in my own early youth, Hotwheels: Velocity X?
thank you, thank you so much ive been waiting for this one for a good while now, also, thank you for mentioning the other engine, always wondered about that as a kid
I remember this! I got this game in parts. You bought a Hot Wheels car and it came with a disk that contained one of these tracks. Once you had all six installed then you could access the track editor, and got access to a special car. It was much more limited than the full version, since there were less cars and no tournament mode. Still really fun as a kid though.
They were a lot like that, except they came with Stunt Track Driver 2 (obviously) and a trailer and demo for Stunt Track Driver 1. I wish i still had the disks, but they've been lost to time.
Scratch that I still have them! All six of them. No idea if they still work. The CDs don't contain much formation on them. Just a picture of a car, the logo of the car that came with, and Race Level # 1/6 or whatever track it is. Edit: Well it appears to run. Apparently it was for something called Planethotwheels.com. It has galleries of Hot Wheels Cars from 2001-2002 and a special one with ones from 2003. It also has some other demos I forgot about. Also on further inspection you do get all cars, and unlock two per disk.
If you drive either forward or backward (Forget which one) into I think the Southeast corner of the Level Editor backyard with the red tank tread car, you can phase through it and explore outside the level's boundaries.
How much do you want to bet the engine used for the track builder was supposed to be used for the main game but HW Corporate went "No! We want more FMV!"
You should track down and review two of my personal favourite Hot Wheels games (aside from Stunt Track Driver): 2001 Hot Wheels JETZ for the PC and 1999 Hot Wheels Turbo Racing for the N64. Personally loved these two and I still do!
I know n64 is a little new for the niche you generally target, but watching your videos on How Wheels games reminds me of Hot Wheels Turbo Racing which is an n64 game I played all the time when I was younger. Super fun and is technically still raced on tracks, though largely scaled up. The soundtrack to the game also includes Primus which is awesome.
Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver, Planet Hot Wheels, and Hot Wheels Velocity X defined my childhood gaming experience back in 1st and 2nd grade... alongside Quake 3: Arena, MechWarrior 3 (jumpstarted my obsession with Battletech in general,) Microsoft Train Simulator (yep, I learned how to drive virtual trains before learning how to drive a car,) 3-D Ultra Lionel Train Town Deluxe, 3-D Ultra RC Racers, Microsoft Pinball Arcade, and various PS1 games such as the Crash Bandicoot series and Pac-Man World (didn't play Spyro until years later.)
Nice game, remember playing a lot of different Hot Wheels games when I was younger. There actually was an open world HW game, but it came later I think, and was called Velocity X.
having an alternate root in a prerender course is kind of amazing for the time, and for it just being a kids game...although I know there are a bunch of adults who are super into hotwheels.
It runs on Windows 10. Windows 10's game mode allows for easy compatibility with older titles, while still taking advantage of the extra hardware you are given.
Hot Wheels _STD_ 2 _"Get N' Dirty"_
Yeah, idk how they didn't see that, but im glad they didn't.
Makes you wonder if it was originally two games that were stitched together as one of them wasn't working.
But... Hello You!
I always had this theory with my siblings that in STD 1 its a young kid who wins a hot wheels contest and then he builds all those crazy ass tracks (as shown in the intro)
in STD 2 we made a theory that its the same kid grown as an adult and his track pieces are all missing. so to relive the glory days he builds a bunch of tracks out of dirt and spare pieces he has lying around.
God, I miss FMV that isn't cheesy live action cutscenes. When FMV was used well, like in this game, it looks amazing! In my opinion anyway.
LGR the type of guy to have a 60$ game DVD and re-buy it again to get the box
What?! A slight crease in the manual? Time for a new copy!
I just bought old Star Wars PC games despite owning them on Steam and GOG (and Dark Forces 2 on CD-ROM... Need to get that box!)
He's not the only one, I do it too. Such is the curse of the collector.
That's me. At least if I know a physical release is imminent I wouldn't buy it digital. Damn you Wayforward!
There are plenty of games that have that price, can you google?
Part of what I love about this channel is that it exists in it's own universe. The rest of the Internet is in a fuss about No Man's Sky and CS:GO drama while we're all here watching a review of a Hotwheels game expansion that won't run on a modern system. Something really cozy and refreshing about that.
Also, that 3D engine looks dank.
Haha, thanks! LGR is my own personal bubble of nostalgia so I feel compelled to thrust it upon others.
MR LGR , you are the most nostalgia I have ever felt, except the time I smelled my family home smell on a dark corner of my hand me down couch .
P.s can you review jedi knight 2
"if you've got a windows 98 pc lying around and run across a copy of the game at a thrift store"
That's quite the niche target group for a video!
And it's exactly the kind of group I have watching LGR ;)
I have Three Win 98 PC's lying around!! Lol. Great Review.
I have a windows 98 virtual pc on my modern pc, does that count?
My main computer still runs xp sp3 and my laptop runs 98 se... I do have a cheapo windows 7 netbook for internet. But for gaming it's a Pentium 4 and an 850mhz celeron for me.. well. And the IBM model 95... For windows 3.11 and dos stuff... Haha
I just happen to have a 98 pc lying around, AND I found this at a thrift store last week. Can't wait to have a go.
Hot wheels: Stunt Track Driver games, the only STDs I want
Hot Wheels Velocity X is an open world hot wheels game... so there's that for your craving. It's my childhood in a game. :D
Same!
I love that game. :)
That games good shit
I don't even know if I have to qualify it as such, but Velocity X was really good for a Hot Wheels game. I sunk way too many hours into it as a *teenager* on PS2
I had the GBA version, and I had a lot fun with it. It was also my first video game.
I remember playing this game. I could never get past some of the levels since they seemed a bit harder than in the first game.
Off-roading is awesome! I loved it when I was a kid.
This gave me SO MUCH nostalgia! I used to play this all the time back when I was still small...
Wow. I played this so much as a kid. Thanks for the nostalgia.
Hot Wheels STD 2: Get'N Herpes
2:40 HELL, there's *CRABS* in it!
Glad to see these stunt track driver games are getting some light again. I remember playing them in the early 2000's, being amazed by the (then) impressive FMV tracks.
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THE NOSTALGIA OH MY GOD
I played the crap out of the original. Awesome.
It was really fun back in the day, though I admit I spent most of my time with that track editor.

I had some of these levels as their own game discs that came packed in with some Hot Wheels cars I got.

Trying to beat this right now
I used to be so addicted to messing around in the track editor as a kid, best thing about this game IMO
I found my old copy of this game, but i don't have a windows 98 PC so i really wanted to see you review this game. I'm so happy you did, and your timing is impeccable. I literally found it a week ago.
I want a Hot Wheels STD... 2.
Hey, the tiny blue door's back!
I did the math... and I'm so surprised to learn that you were born in 1986!
I actually recently found both my HotWheels Stund Track Driver 1 and 2 CDs, and installed them without any issues on my Windows 10 gaming PC! They run with no stutters or errors, which I was super surprised to find. Definitely a great little bit of nostalgia to share with my pals during boring lectures in college.

the fully 3d levels look fun.
Oh my god. I remember playing this game. I played the same level over and over again because I sucked at it. Thanks for this one LGR.
I remember having a demo CD and this was a part of it. The others I remember being Hot Wheels Crash, Mechanix, and that one where you race around an office whose name I forget. They were all fun.
This is why I love you LGR, only you would comment on the compatibility of the hot wheel steering wheel. You're probably the only one using it
I remember that there was this game you could play on the Hot Wheels website that was essentially a full 3D version of stunt track driver, except with powerups, upgrades, and ONLINE MULTIPLAYER with up to like 20 people I think. It was a hell of a lot of fun. I think it used the same engine as this game's track editor.
I had this OH my my childhoooooood. You got me right in the nostalgia bone.
I remember begging my parents to let me stay up past my bedtime and play this game past my bedtime back I was 7.
Fun fact; The track creator engine was actually used in the future for the Planet Hot Wheels game, as well as many other little games in the future such as Turbo Driver and other failed MMOs that were very similar to PHW.
I LOVED playing around in the track editor, it was like playing a different game entirely!
I bought this at from a bargain bin around 2003 or 2004 (I remember that I still was in elementary school then) and oh boy, this video totally triggered nostalgia for me. One of the first games I bought myself.
I like the crabs and the trout at the end.
Thank you for the review its been years since I've played this and it brought back some good mems
The part about going back to you making generalizations about class structure cracked me up, classic LGR. Hahahaha! And for an FMV this game looks impressive and fun!
I liked how this game's camera worked. It was very unique from other racing games
This game looks more fun than I'd have guessed. Every time I see that hot wheels computer I get more obsessed with it.
if you want an excellent 3D hotwheels game with stunts, try hotwheels turbo racing on the N64 and PS1. it has like 40 cars in it!
I know this video is over a year old but I actually have an explanation for why the track editor uses a different engine than the FMV. The track editor's engine was actually a reworked tech demo for a very similar system using different aesthetics for a minigame in the now-defunct MMO Planet HotWheels. The engine btw was used for the majority of Planet Hot Wheels games, such as the Highway 35 tie-in, its various qualifiers and the multitude of multiplayer tracks.
"Hot Wheels Stunt Track Driver with an open world to explore"
Definitely take a look at Matchbox Emergency Patrol if you haven't already, it fits that bill exactly.
I grew up with a MAC in the 90's, all these games passed me by :'(. Great review!
Zestypanda 92 Power Mac until 1999...I had Arthur's Teacher Trouble and that was about it haha
You at least had Marathon, right?
Me too
This is why I watch you Clint, reviews like this! More of these and Tech Tales :D
OK no, I went to this sketchy private school in grade 1 and i remember they had this game on the computers i remember we would spend hours playing this game!! It's been so long and i had no idea what it was called and eventually forgot about it but now that i see it...
SO MUCH NOSTALGIA
you absolutely GOTTA get the full retail BOX
Hot Wheels: Crash was so super fun when I was little. I hope you get to review that one day!
hot wells STD 2: get'n dirty
huh, somehow I don't like the sound of that
Lol, love seeing the wood grain PC in the background.
when that beach theme play... chills.... this was my childhood... now I wonder if I still have have the car.....
Mmm.. like the Roland JV1080/2080/XP series music at the end there. Mid 90s flashback! :D
I liked that you pointed out that this can't run on a modern PC, because some older games can and some cannot.
aw man, do i remember this game! there was a time in the mid 00s where there were these collectible hot wheels sets that came with a cd for get n dirty. it wasnt the whole game though, but a fraction of the game; cleverly designed to make you whine to your parents to get the other cars in the set so you could have the whole game. it definitely worked on me, as i have the complete cd set! ah, those were the days.

Eey you finally reviewed it! What's next for my childhood? Lego Racers 2? Cold Shadow? A ball in a cup???
I remember finding a copy of this when I was a kid in a good will store and hadn't even known there was a STD2. Thankfully I was with my grandma, so she spoiled me and got it. As a kid it was definitely higher on my list than STD1.
This just makes me appreciate that Trackmania exists.
Thank you!
And lots of people are requesting that one, so I'll keep it mind for sometime in the future :)
You are welcome! :D
Awaiting *Maximum Justice™️*
This is a kind of FMV game that could probably still work nowadays. A game like this with modern technology would be pretty cool I think.
thank you, thank you so much ive been waiting for this one for a good while now, also, thank you for mentioning the other engine, always wondered about that as a kid
Wow, I've never heard of that. I only ever knew of these back then:
th-cam.com/video/gzIKrb1i0w4/w-d-xo.html
They were a lot like that, except they came with Stunt Track Driver 2 (obviously) and a trailer and demo for Stunt Track Driver 1. I wish i still had the disks, but they've been lost to time.
Quite possibly, although in my case it would Be Sim Island Life Stories and an old PC, but yes. Or maybe they were thrown out.

How much do you want to bet the engine used for the track builder was supposed to be used for the main game but HW Corporate went "No! We want more FMV!"
failed promo for the game
Doctor: Billy im sad to say you have an std,
Billy: what?
Doctor: HOT WHEELS STUNT TRACK DRIVER 2!!!
You should track down and review two of my personal favourite Hot Wheels games (aside from Stunt Track Driver): 2001 Hot Wheels JETZ for the PC and 1999 Hot Wheels Turbo Racing for the N64. Personally loved these two and I still do!
I agree; these games are cool! I have those same Hot Wheels games, except I have the PlayStation 1 version of "Hot Wheels: Turbo Racing."
I remember playing this game for days when I was a kid. This and some cartoon goofy game that I think involved a skateboard.
There was once a 3D hotwheels open world stunt game you could play in your browser, but I'll be damned if I remember what it was.
This game describes my childhood, I used to play the shit out of this game when I was a little boy. Thanks for the Nostalgia!
The stunt track editor looks like the game they released on the PSone.
What PS1 game?
Hotwheels Turbo racing
Cool! I have that game for the same platform. Thanks!
Just waiting for that Hot Wheels: Crash! review. That was the shit as a kid.
I played this game so much when I was younger, always wondered what it was called.
I had this game as a kid. The nostalgia wave is hitting me hard :D
Good lord. Velocity X is some serious nostalgia
Nice game, remember playing a lot of different Hot Wheels games when I was younger. There actually was an open world HW game, but it came later I think, and was called Velocity X.
Now we just need a Planet Hotwheels review.
having an alternate root in a prerender course is kind of amazing for the time, and for it just being a kids game...although I know there are a bunch of adults who are super into hotwheels.
Oh my, that acronym xD
Great review!
Thanks for telling us about your experiences with STD's Clint. :P
It runs on Windows 10. Windows 10's game mode allows for easy compatibility with older titles, while still taking advantage of the extra hardware you are given.
Awe, I had this when I was a kid. Good memories. :)
I like how all these hotwheels games pretty much re-use the same stunt system and sound effects.
STD. Oh god, what was I playing back then?
Without a doubt, the crowning feature of this game was the full 3D custom tracks.
Hey i had this game! Totally forgot about it! you bought back some kid time memory's XD
Man, we were different 12 year olds. I was a hipster following every internet opinion, and I even watched your vids
A real-time game that looked like this would be pretty incredible...
Great video, it cracked me up every time you said "Get'n Dirty" haha!
