    I think you need to be real careful in that bin since you have been taking beans out already. Also I would have a talk with whoever built the bin & didn't seal the vents. They should stand the loss.

    I know someone that died in a grain bin accident last week. He was working at an elevator and he was cleaning inside the bin and became submerged under corn and ended up dieing. Just be careful while inside a bin!

    I used to work at a bin company and had to fix quite a few of these problems, usually on older bins though. Sorry to tell you but that silicone won't last a year. Best thing to do without too much work would be to get some butyl rubber caulk for gutters. Apple liberally on the outside of the vent and roof. If possible, try getting into the holes. Then put a nice bead all along the 2 sides and top and smooth out with finger or a narrow putty knife. The pressure will ensure it is sticking. This stuff is sticky as all hell, especially in the summer. It will get on you, but penetrating oil takes it off. It stays flexible year round and will last a long, long time. Dont be skimpy on applying it. Wear a safety harness when on the roof doing this, tied off to the roof ring.

    You might want to also put some silicone around the outside edges of the vents too for more protection. Having it on the inside only might cause it to come loose and leak again. In this instance, extra is a better bet than just enough to plug the holes.

    It looks to me like the guy's that built the bin applied the sealant in the wrong place so when the vent was put onto the roof it didn't seat onto the sealant. Poor workmanship sadly is putting you in danger because you are in a partially emptied bin trying to make a repair.
    Stay safe young man and be more careful in those bins.

    Be careful climbing into a bin that has been pulled from, thats one of the most dangerous things to do because of the voids that can be created. If I ever get into one that we've been pulling from, I always wear a harness.

    • @PaulsonFarms
      @PaulsonFarms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Cole Casavant It's still extremely dangerous, especially since there was spoiled grain in there. What that does is create voids that when someone gets on it can collapse and pull you into that void, many people have been killed that way. Like I said, its almost impossible to avoid getting in bins because sumps do plug. But whenever I get in I always have a harness that is tethered to the roof of the bin.

    I was curious to how old that bin was? Looks fairly new. If that's the kind of work they do I would look for other problems before too late. They tried to put caulk down first and than place the vent on the caulk but weren't even close. I would show them the video proof and demand some kind of compensation. Great channel.

    • @dalgire245

      Marine caulks are not just for boats...Here in the deep South East Texas I keep a tube in my freezer, the way to preserve it once the tube is open. (Learned that from the local hardware guy) Obviously it doesn’t freeze .. suitable for South Dakota. A bit pricey but that may offset the dockage charge and the maintenance upkeep on those bin vents.

  • @JesseBowersIV
    @JesseBowersIV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Time to check the silicone... and apply some on the outside this time, from on top of the roof. That will force rain to go around. Applying silicone on the inside will allow rain to puddle and sit, and possible puddle enough that more rain will come along, and grow the puddle until water gets up and around your silicone. Best wishes that you prevented any further leaking!

  • @farming4g
    @farming4g 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Not surprised for a newer bin to not be sealed correctly... really have to watch contractors nowadays to make sure everything is put together right. We always find some spoilage every year for our grain, either nearby the doors, near fan ducts, or other areas where moisture can seep in (snow being the main culprit, and this winter was no joke again).
    Viewers have mentioned a bit about being in the grain bin, especially having spoiled grain and such, pretty dangerous... should have almost waited until new crop went in the bin or used a harness of somesort in that situation. But also wondering about not wearing a mask? Grain dust is one thing, but mold spores are another. Stay safe!

    From the bin mfg web page "A 1-inch tall ridge surrounding the vent hole prevents moisture from entering the bin." Looks like the installer somehow cut that off or didn't use the proper roof panels for the vents.. You would probably get some support from Superior Bins to get this fixed..

    I build bins and i can tell you who ever installed your vents did it incorrectly. Now most all your bin manufactures per punch vent openings in the roof sheets. But the reason there leaking is because when they cut in the vents the sheet should have been bent up to create a valley. You will never keep them from leaking bc the silicone will just keep cracking. I would suggest hiring someone who knows what there doing to redue vents.

    Good thing you guys have blower fans on your bins. Otherwise you'd be stirring those soybeans around inside by shovel every day it gets hot and muggy out. Knew a wheat farmer who had to do that with one of his bins that didn't have a blower fan on it. Doesn't matter if it's wheat or soybeans, if it gets hot enough inside those bins, they'll catch fire.

      yes the best would be to remove the wents and add a layer of silicone between the layers,
      ore as you say add silicone from the out-upside, so water cant be trapd in the cracks.
      which would be catastrophic here in norway where we have lots of freezing periods in winter, where water would freeze at night and taw in the sun.
