If I were to upgrade, it’d just end up being another pair of Tektons. Anyway, many of my friends saw them when I first bought em and said that they looked much too big for the room. To that, I’ll just sit em down, put on a record of their choosing, and see the look of awe on their face, quickly realizing they’re not too large for the room by any means.
I agree Eric. On a related note to this room overload stuff. Oftentimes I notice that all too many audio enthusiasts will not utilize EQ. An audio system in a residential sized space, benefits enormously by utilizing EQ within the modal region... below the transition frequency. So between approx 20hz-300hz or so. Big resonant peaks of energy oftentimes 10dB or more, plague this frequency range and bloat and blur bass detail. Ideally using a parametric EQ and via measurement, just tame the two or three most prominent peaks... and you're golden. Automated room EQ can work as well, but can be a problem when it begins altering the frequency response above the transition frequency, that region cannot be corrected by EQ. 1.) Speaker placement 2.) Listener position 3.) Subtle parametric EQ via measurement

Eric, this was something that needed to be said. As I'm working on building out my own dedicated room, I found myself saying "man I wish it was bigger so I could put in some Moabs or Ufbehrts." I said that because I had bought into the lie (usually from "experienced" reviewers), that only a huge n high listening space would let the speakers breath or do them justice. I wanted them so bad that my compromise was that if maybe I turned them down my room could "tolerate" these massive speakers so I could enjoy a live performance sense of scale. Ur explanation of sound and proper room treatments has put me at ease to not compromise based on the size of my room. Also, this myth needs to be canned because it probably scares the daylights out of your competition. What I mean is, there are a lot of speaker choices out there in the size range of say the Enzo/Lore and downward. How many choices though (for normal people), are in the Moab/Ufbehrt category? Very few; that's how many. Now find those close in price to your products that can deliver even a portion of your sound. Now you here crickets. Great way to downplay these amazing bargains is to say "well ya, but they will completely overload most rooms" Bull____! Keep the videos coming sir. In the immortal words of Wayne, of Wayne n Garth. "One day you will be mine, oh yes." Oh, any wisdom on your new 4x10 subwoofer? Good heavens! You see, we've also been told that subwoofers are great for movies, but for audiophiles, it should start with the letters JL and have 4 inches of excursion and 2000 watts of power. I'm more of the school of thought that UNTREATED rooms cause the issue. I've seen B&W N805 "overwhelm" a a tiny room. Rather, the room was like a closet and it had no sound absorbing material. It was an echo chamber.
Eric some speakers will have too much bass in a smaller room , partly because the speakers will have to be placed closer to the walls. They are balanced for large room. I do agree that just because a speaker is over six feet tall, 300 lbs and can do 125 dB doesn't mean it won't sound good in a medium or smallish room.
I couldn’t agree more with Eric. My Double Impact SE just “look” large in my room but after setting them up right they just disappear and the soundstage is amazing.
@@webberron I got standard DI's that I upgraded (built an external one due to size of capacitors) the crossovers and rewired that would make you sell your SE's....no BS. They're spectacular. And I dont use that word to describe anything
As I have said in other forums, the room is the most important component in an audio system. Bad room = bad sound no matter how little or how much is spent on speakers/electronics.
I agree. Another component is a larger speaker may be able to put out enough spl to overload the ears themselves. Everyone has a different level as to how much spl they can handle.
I suspect that the biggest problem comes from smaller speakers in a big room than a big speaker in a small room. I have 3 pairs of speakers in 2 rooms, a decent sized living room/dining room and a converted bedroom. The bookshelf Focals only work in the bedroom. I have not tried to put the medium Focal floor standers or my big Legacy floor standers into the bedroom, though I am sure the medium ones would work. The better system is also in the living room, and it makes sense to have it matched up to the bigger speakers. I alternate between the 2 pairs since they have different strengths.
I had a pair of Pendragons & definitely had room overload. My room is about 12' x 12.5' and carpeted with some small furnishings. The bass just took over completely, and I've had many other speakers in the room with no problem. The only other speaker that I had the same overload problem with was some Monitor Audio towers, not sure what model since it was years ago & I change gear often. That said, I'd try other Tekton speakers, just smaller with front firing ports.

We need speakers designed to be be placed near front and side walls! No rear ports! A sealed version of Impact monitors that can do double duty for home theater (L/C/R) or music in smaller rooms where nearby wall boundaries limit speaker choices. Take advantage of wall reinforcement to compensate for the lack of ports.
Why no ports?! Like "room overload" vented cabinets are positively the most misunderstood concept in loudsepaker design. I'm reluctant to do a video because I don't want to disclose information on the topic. Please call me to discuss. And yes, I am certainly willing to make you sealed cabinets.

I agree after 50 years of audio experience that room overload is a myth, also Troels Gravesen was surprised that his best and biggest 4way with 18 inch bass played over room issues , my bass tower with 6 bass speakers of 12 inch each side was the solution for bass issues in small room! Even a 18 inch on ground and an 18 inch above is a solution , big cone surfaces move much more air without linear cone distortion , it sounds effortless like a big filarmonic orchestra , it never shouts , but big effortless power that gives goose bumps
So let me ask you this question please...If I have an apartment with floor to ceiling windows, let's say it's not square but sort of a crazy rectangle or triangle, would the speakers he's holding, the moabs or some other large speaker would they work great, or would I have to do a lot of room treatments, or just decide on a regular 1,500 square ft room that the majority of apartments have?

From what I've read about them, they sound like my ideal speaker being such a fan of open baffle designs. The Sigmas even get the nod for "wife acceptance factor", so I'm REALLY interested in getting a pair.. She actually thought they looked sexy and I totally agree with her!

Reflecting 25 - 40 hz waves double up quicker in a smaller room and some call this room gain 'overload'. You can adjust the gain on a sub to fit the room but here's no gain on the woofers of a Moab. Picture a golf ball landing in the center of a 100 yard square pool, watch the single wave it created travel out into decay. Drop a marble into a 2 foot square pool. Those waves hitting themselves over and over in the small pool are overload. Those are extreme examples, but you get the idea. My JBL 590's sound great in my large room, in a smaller room they sound like 4 subs were added

I am a vintage audiophile. (60 years) I will test for standing waves in a 'live' room. Clapping does fine. Then I put some sort of sound absorbing material (or furniture, bookshelves, etc) on the X and Y horizontal axis of the speaker(s) itself. The decay of mid/high frequencies should become very fast. Carpeting helps. Basically, and as simply as possible it get the 'rattle' out of the room. Then things even out. This is not an in depth acoustic analysis. Just shooting from the hip.
Great speakers, hobby-shop-like customer experience. Bought the Tekton Brilliance. The good: Great sounding speakers - you hear the soloist right in your room, good sound staging. The Bad: - the speakers are very intrusive into your living/listening room, chunky, no-beauty-queen - had a terrible customer experience: credit card charged May 4th, the speakers shipped 4 weeks later, but NO GRILLES (that were ordered). 4 reminders and 4 promises to send the grilles "tomorrow" later we are on September 3rd with no grilles, and my kids are destroying the woofers and tweeters. asked for the drawings of the grilles to do it myself DIY - not answer of any sort from the company. - the placement of the tweeters, mid-range drivers are NOT what the pictures on the website would show. the tweeters are above the mid-range and well above anybody's head-levels - about 9 inches above my listening level, and to get the best sound I need to stand up or sit on 3 pillows. No Bueno. When asked about the discrepancy between the pictures on the website and what I received, I was tersely told by a receptionist that that "this is the newest design". no less, no more. go figure. Summary: half-finished speakers designed, subject to change the design without the notice or explanation before they ship. If this is for you - then they do sound very good. But if you want the speakers that come to your home and just work as promised, then look elsewhere
I have seen many, many comments like yours all over the internet Has all the hallmarks of a scammer. At least you didn't get Eric on the phone yelling at you basically blaming you for the design change or grilles - I've seen quite a few of those stories.... Thank you for being brave enough to post your experience as a warning to others. I'm surprised Eric hasn't threatened to sue you like he did to several reviewers (Erin's Audio Corner, ASR, New Record Day).
Just would like to ask. Do big speakers need more distance from walls compared with smaller ones? The so called space to breathe. Or it’s all the same because of frequencies and not volumes we play at.
Surely large speakers in small rooms will mean you can't get far enough away from them to allow the sound from the drivers to integrate? Also if you are close to speakers, room reflections contribute less to what you hear, you are near field, which is a different experience...and then if you've got large speakers in a small space, getting the best spacing for stereo imaging field becomes more difficult....

I just wonder what the benefit of having a bass driver on top and on in the bottom is, compared to two at the bottom (like the double impact)? Yes it's a myth as well; - large rooms - small rooms - car audio - In-Ear headphones They all deal with the long wavelengths just fine. In reality, there are distinct advantages to smaller acoustic spaces whereby the reciprocal gains give back below the room's first/fundamental mode (i.e., "pressure vessel gain", or "room gain").
@@FOH3663 I had a really nice system installed in a car once with sperate subwoofers. It never produced deep bass until I rolled the windows down. The difference was quite dramatic.
@@FOH3663 Sure, but depending on what system reproduce those drivers, bass extension differs, thus room or any closed place size is important. To took "loud" example (pun intended), compare bass reproduced by car system drivers with bass reproduced by big a..s subwoofers which are so big, it has to be put in the back. Difference is so huge that you should be bass maniac to enjoy latter case. But put the same subwoofer in open area and it will still be powerful but not fatiguing.
You heard right. It is why car speakers are so small. And usually car systems are sized and matched to the space. But Tekton turns around and says to go ahead and put those giant speakers in any size of room.... They are peddling BS and just want to upsell you as they fleece you.

Too FUNNY! Several times Eric LEANS on one of the Moab speakers, which is NOT butted up against the 2nd Moab speaker, yet it does NOT move! Like not in the slightest bit. So Yeah, BIG speaker!!!
It often happens that someone sets up a set of speakers and finds the bass is boomy, muddy, and overwhelming. More often than not this is worse with bigger speakers with better bass, and less of a problem with tiny speakers with weak bass. Room overload is the often repeated mythical reason given for this. As Eric explains it is unfounded. Something I've known for years but nice to hear coming from a speaker designer for a change. Room overload is nonsense. As Eric says if it was a real thing then there would be no good car audio at all. Even the smallest room in a house is huge compared to a car, yet audiophools blame the small room when their poor setups sound bad. Wrong. Listen to Eric. Its the application, not the room, and the details of the room, not its size, that matters.

At a given SPL what speaker is going to give better Resolution and Dynamics.? Itty Bitty or Gigantor probably the Larger one . So just buy the best you can get and dont be silly with your volume level .

@@gme10955 my room is about 15 x 28 with 9 foot ceiling. But I dont play them really loud. To me it's about clarity and a little kick. I had B&Ws the small stand ones I think they where 701s... and they sounded flat and muddled compared to the Moabs. Also and most importantly, I have a very understanding wife. Hope that this helps.

Came along at the right time for me. Was looking at a set of speakers but thought the small room they will be in could not handle it.
I agree with you. I had a pair of large Magnepan’s and two Sunfire subs for my bedroom system... there was no overload.

I am a vintage audiophile. (60 years) I will test for standing waves in a 'live' room. Clapping does fine. Then I put some sort of sound absorbing material (or furniture, bookshelves, etc) on the X and Y horizontal axis of the speaker(s) itself. The decay of mid/high frequencies should become very fast. Carpeting helps. Basically, and as simply as possible it get the 'rattle' out of the room. Then things even out. This is not an in depth acoustic analysis. Just shooting from the hip.

Great speakers, hobby-shop-like customer experience. Bought the Tekton Brilliance.
The good: Great sounding speakers - you hear the soloist right in your room, good sound staging.
The Bad:
- the speakers are very intrusive into your living/listening room, chunky, no-beauty-queen
- had a terrible customer experience: credit card charged May 4th, the speakers shipped 4 weeks later, but NO GRILLES (that were ordered). 4 reminders and 4 promises to send the grilles "tomorrow" later we are on September 3rd with no grilles, and my kids are destroying the woofers and tweeters. asked for the drawings of the grilles to do it myself DIY - not answer of any sort from the company.
- the placement of the tweeters, mid-range drivers are NOT what the pictures on the website would show. the tweeters are above the mid-range and well above anybody's head-levels - about 9 inches above my listening level, and to get the best sound I need to stand up or sit on 3 pillows. No Bueno. When asked about the discrepancy between the pictures on the website and what I received, I was tersely told by a receptionist that that "this is the newest design". no less, no more. go figure.
Summary: half-finished speakers designed, subject to change the design without the notice or explanation before they ship. If this is for you - then they do sound very good. But if you want the speakers that come to your home and just work as promised, then look elsewhere
I have seen many, many comments like yours all over the internet Has all the hallmarks of a scammer. At least you didn't get Eric on the phone yelling at you basically blaming you for the design change or grilles - I've seen quite a few of those stories....
Thank you for being brave enough to post your experience as a warning to others. I'm surprised Eric hasn't threatened to sue you like he did to several reviewers (Erin's Audio Corner, ASR, New Record Day).
Its too hard and expensive to change your room so blame it on the audio equipment

Just would like to ask. Do big speakers need more distance from walls compared with smaller ones? The so called space to breathe. Or it’s all the same because of frequencies and not volumes we play at.

Surely large speakers in small rooms will mean you can't get far enough away from them to allow the sound from the drivers to integrate? Also if you are close to speakers, room reflections contribute less to what you hear, you are near field, which is a different experience...and then if you've got large speakers in a small space, getting the best spacing for stereo imaging field becomes more difficult....
This is inaccurate information. They integrate perfectly at 2.5X the diameter of the array and the listener can get far enough from the speakers.

I've heard that the bass needs space to propagate (since the sound waves are bigger) which makes it hard to get good bass in a small room. Is this a myth, as well?
Yes it's a myth as well;
- large rooms
- small rooms
- car audio
- In-Ear headphones
They all deal with the long wavelengths just fine.
In reality, there are distinct advantages to smaller acoustic spaces whereby the reciprocal gains give back below the room's first/fundamental mode (i.e., "pressure vessel gain", or "room gain").
@@FOH3663 I had a really nice system installed in a car once with sperate subwoofers. It never produced deep bass until I rolled the windows down. The difference was quite dramatic.
@@FOH3663 Sure, but depending on what system reproduce those drivers, bass extension differs, thus room or any closed place size is important. To took "loud" example (pun intended), compare bass reproduced by car system drivers with bass reproduced by big a..s subwoofers which are so big, it has to be put in the back. Difference is so huge that you should be bass maniac to enjoy latter case. But put the same subwoofer in open area and it will still be powerful but not fatiguing.
You heard right. It is why car speakers are so small. And usually car systems are sized and matched to the space.
But Tekton turns around and says to go ahead and put those giant speakers in any size of room.... They are peddling BS and just want to upsell you as they fleece you.

Sorry for noob question - what is room overload?
It often happens that someone sets up a set of speakers and finds the bass is boomy, muddy, and overwhelming. More often than not this is worse with bigger speakers with better bass, and less of a problem with tiny speakers with weak bass. Room overload is the often repeated mythical reason given for this. As Eric explains it is unfounded. Something I've known for years but nice to hear coming from a speaker designer for a change. Room overload is nonsense. As Eric says if it was a real thing then there would be no good car audio at all. Even the smallest room in a house is huge compared to a car, yet audiophools blame the small room when their poor setups sound bad. Wrong. Listen to Eric. Its the application, not the room, and the details of the room, not its size, that matters.

So yes, room overload is a thing and it is caused by overlarge bass capacity in too small a space - it is a ratio - but then he goes on to recommend too-big unnecessarily expensive speakers to his audience - even for small rooms! He is not even a slick flim-flam guy. I'm thinking he is a few cards short of a full deck.
At a given SPL what speaker is going to give better Resolution and Dynamics.? Itty Bitty or Gigantor probably the Larger one . So just buy the best you can get and dont be silly with your volume level .

@@gme10955 my room is about 15 x 28 with 9 foot ceiling. But I dont play them really loud. To me it's about clarity and a little kick. I had B&Ws the small stand ones I think they where 701s... and they sounded flat and muddled compared to the Moabs. Also and most importantly, I have a very understanding wife. Hope that this helps.

Eric is doing the opposite and saying people can put those huge speakers in any size room - fixed speaker size (big) in any room (variable).
