  • The fall mullet run off the southeast coast of Florida is truly something to see! A variety pack of silver mullet, black mullet, and finger mullet push down the beach with just about every predatory fish in the ocean looking to capitalize on an easy meal. Finger mullet are a primo bait for inshore fishing in the fall targeting snook, tarpon, jacks and other inshore species. They can also be deadly offshore trolling for wahoo, dolphin, kings, sails and more. In this 'tips and tricks' video Captain Mike Calabrese, owner/inventor of Fire Tailz baits, demonstrates how to easily rig a swimming finger mullet for trolling. With the backbone removed from the bait, as you will see in the video, it swims as if it were alive when you are trolling it behind the boat! Greetings from Australia! Great video.
    Two questions?
Would a mullet rigged in this manner be okay for cast and retrieve? Or would the pressure of repeated casting wreck the bait?
What prevents this from spinning in the water in a most unnatural action? I can’t imagine the hook has enough weight to keep it from spinning.

You could cast it but the retrieve rate would need to be fast enough to create lifelike action. As for spinning the lead under its chin will balance the bait and keep it swimming straight if rigged properly. Thanks for tuning in from Australia!

Sweet vid! Question - does trolling the mullet work all year or is it better in the fall during the mullet run? What would stop my from freezing a bunch of mullet and rigging them up for later use? Just curious

Mullet is a great bait to troll no matter what time of year it is! Vacuum seal them up and save yourself a bunch of money on bait!!
