    Peter, I just wanted to thank you for your great video demonstrating your very clever way of using the door mounted pull-up bar. I created this for my daughter using your example. She can’t go to her climbing gym during the COVID lockdown. We bought her a hangboard for Christmas and we already had the same exact pull-up bar from your video, so it turned out to be the perfect solution. I just had to use the extra recommended wood piece between, since her board is not made of wood itself. So, thank you!

    I usually do all my hangboarding at the climbing gym since I work at a climbing gym. Due to Covid-19 I've been stuck at home and was forced to figure out how to assemble my own hangboard system. I used this video and this set up to assemble a Beastmaker to my pull up bar! Such an easy inter-changeable set up! SO grateful for your video! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
    Sidenote: I actually ended up taking off the duct tape on the galvanized steel pipes because I didn't need them. :)

    • @gemmaharries9275

      Thinking of doing this! Did you use the intermediate bit of wood or did you drill directly onto the back of the beastmaker? Would be worried about the screws coming though!

    • @gemmaharries9275
      @gemmaharries9275 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ikepayne632 I've made mine now and used an intermediary bit of wood which worked spot on to fix the pull up bar/flange securely on without coming through to the front of the beastmaker. Did have one screw just creep through (I guess I could have angled the flange a bit better to avoid it but would have been a chew on). Just unscrewed that one a touch. Could have also used a slightly shorter screw in that one but didn't have any slightly shorter to hand! Definitely suggest the intermediary bit of wood though.

    Thank you! I just made this. After some testing, I sawed the arms off the pull-up bar about 6”, then installed the board in the shorted arms, bringing It much closer to the doorframe. It worked out great- no give at all now and there is less stress placed on the frame. As a bonus, the pull-up bar is more accessible as well if you want to use it, as the board doesn't stick out as much/get in the way

    • @ikepayne632
      @ikepayne632 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a brilliant idea

    • @ikepayne632
      @ikepayne632 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you install the board in the shortened arms? With the shorter arms I cant get the full 4 inch metal nipple tube in there, so I'm just curious how you secured the shorter tube in the arms.

    • @dobrojutro
      @dobrojutro 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ike Payne what problem are you having? Are the nipples now too wide apart that you shortened the arms? The pipe nipples I bought were initially very loose, and required several wraps of tape to fit snuggly within the unmodified arms. After I cut the arms off, the nipples barely fit inside, I had to take some of the tape off and experiment until i had the right fit, also forcing it abit. I think the arms are angled inward very slightly, causing this to happen

  • @teytag8844
    @teytag8844 5 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    Ive had this set up for a few months now. Confirmed that it's sturdy, and the tape 'nipple' system is solid, my board has never slipped out or even so much as moved. Just wanna point out something for people to watch out for: due to the way the pullup bar is designed, it wants most of its downward force applied as close to that horizontal bar as possible, so the doorframe force is, well, down. Depending on how wide your door is, and how far out your actual holds are mounted, the down force of you hanging *can* start to warp the plastic part thats above the door frame. In my case, this caused the edges of the plastic part to literally push into the drywall causing damage. Im personally not mad at all, and its an easy spackle fix, just a heads up for others trying this.

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for letting all of us know about what happened to your door frame. I just double checked mine and it didn’t happen to me yet. I wonder how different the build is between our door frame. Also if you don’t mind, can you let us know your weight? Mine is around 145 lbs.

    • @teytag8844
      @teytag8844 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Yup, Im 175, the actual training mount brings the bar + holds to about 15 lbs, so around 200 lbs total. My theory is, its a result of how wide the door frame is, and how shallow the door molding is. If the frame is wide-ish, the down force tends to bend the middle of the pull-up bar, which then bends the part on the frame. Mostly I commented so people knew to look out for symptoms of this. If you see the plastic part of the pull up bar start to bend, you could end up damaging your wall. If its fine, you're good to go! Happy climbing

    • @LeDeyo
      @LeDeyo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did you drill through the bar and nipple to fixate a screw in there to lock it? I know physically the nipple shouldn't pop out with downward force, but I like this extra bit of security you're doing just in case something weird happens.

    Unfortunately my doorframe is pretty thin so the the board is angled down pretty substantially (like 20 degrees or so, making slopers *ahem* challenging).
    Solution I've gone for is DIY Wooden blocks and books used between the doorframe and the hangboand side contact points with the doorframe.
    Also would advise against using to much weight with this system, my bar has now begun to flex a bit worryingly.

      Maybe adding a wooden plank at the back side, between the bars and the plastic, you'd just need longer screws.

    Had a major problem finding #14 screws in 3/4" (shortest was 1" which is too long for royal edge boards), so I went with #12 3/4" screws which also better fit the countersinks in the floor flange.
    Also keep in mind your pilot hole sizes will differ if the board is for some reason made of softwood, but I can't imagine they would be.

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your experience! If my memory is correct #12 screws were a bit too small, but I guess it also depends on the flange you’re using. Glad it all worked out for you!

    • @ianparmley7518
      @ianparmley7518 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For my flange (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BTYTOB6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1), the #14 slightly stuck up from the countersinks, the #12 sinks into it just a tad, which gave the screw slightly better penetration. I'm unsure of the amount of force it would take to sheer the screws, but I'm pretty sure the wood or the iron gym would fail first :P

      I'd imagine most over-the-door pull up bars would work as long as they have a neutral grip and don't have anything sticking out too far in front.

      If you google "door gym" you'll find several products from other brands such as Adidas, Titan Fitness, Abilica, etc. Most look like they have a similar metal pipe construction, but it's impossible to say 100% if they will work by just looking at the photos.

  • @paulyjungle7380

    Quick question, wont the 4 screws from the flanges eventually crack and split either the hangboard from back or even the back wooden bridge from the pinpoint pressure from using the hangboard over time as I'm 160 lb's???
    I'm just wondering, because this looks like a very a practical solution, but also want to avoid damaging a wooden hangboard, or even falling off it from this type of failure. Please let me know your thoughts and experiences on using this solution.

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The way to make it work with a beastmaker is get a piece of extra flat wood to serve as a bridge, so you can connect the pull up bar to that wood and also connect the beastmaker to that wood. I don’t have a picture around me but let me know if it makes sense.

    I built one using a plastic hangboard and a 2” x 8” piece of board to act as a bridge. I’m worried about the structural integrity. It also weighs a lot more, so there is more stress on the pull-up bar. I have a feeling that the screws connecting the flanges to the wood will be the first thing to fail. Any speculation on integrity and lasting ability?

    • @GeekClimber
      @GeekClimber  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on what kind of wood you use to act as a bridge, hopefully someone else who have the same setup as yours can share their experience. Mine is still functioning as usual.

  • @pierocus3261
    @pierocus3261 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    The problem I m having is the height. I'm 190cm tall and when I hang my knees touch de floor almost. I would love to find some video on creating something like an extension starting from the tubing where you attached the flanges. This way I could raise the whole system and make it more comfortable to hang on to. I guess I ll take measures and just get a custom fit from a welder or something.

    • @FreezingHotCoffee
      @FreezingHotCoffee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You could attach some plywood or something similar (like the example for the plastic hangboard, but with the height above the flanges increased) and attach the hangboard higher up the wood

  • @igloo2862
    @igloo2862 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You don't need a drill. There are pre-drilled holes that match up perfectly for the flange. I used two screws for each flange because they were two pre-drilled holes on each side and I think that's plenty since I'm only 150 lbs, 4 screws should be plenty.

    Woops. My door is literally at a corner. Can't see how I might be able to install the pull up bar since it requires some length on both sides of the door. I'm using a suction pull up bar, with those rotating rods, and then tying small portable hangboards such as crimps and blocks on it. It works, but not ideal because the rope swings around.

    • @GeekClimber

      I am guessing you wrap the duck tape around the galvanized nipples for too many rounds? I remember wrapping 1-2 rounds is enough. It should be able to slide in without the tape bunching up. Let me know if it works.
